MN GOP Party Chair Ron Carey held a Press Conference today letting everyone know that he doesn’t like politicians like Al Franken who have lived out of state. Al Franken was born in Minnesota and was schooled in Minnesota through high school. He returned a little while ago to sink his roots back into the state he loves.
Seriously though, what a jerk. He grows up in Minnesota and comes back!? That is unacceptable. I totally agree with Ron Carey, who grew up in Iowa until age 18, that politicians like Norm Coleman, who grew up in New York City and went to College there followed by law school in Iowa, are way better! I mean, what’s more Minnesotan than Norm Coleman’s Mayor Quimby-esque accent? There’s just no way that someone who hasn’t lived in Minnesota all their life could possibly gain political traction here! Right Ron?

Al Franken was not born in Minnesota. He was born in New York.
Hmmmmm … ask Ron how that standard should apply to John ‘Carpet Bagger’ Kline. He’ll start with “Well … that;s different … ” See, the standards the GOP apply to DFLers should not apply to their own!

I hope the Franken gang pay close attention to this one:
Michelle Bachmann
born in Waterloo, Buchanan County, Iowa, April 6, 1956
John Kline
born September 6, 1947 in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Jim Ramsted
born in Jamestown, Stutsman County, N.D., May 6, 1946
Norm Coleman
born August 17, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York — — — — — — That’s the entire Republican Congressional team from Minnesota, not one born here. They seem to have a hard time finding Minnesotans to carry their BS into Congress.
Boy, if Ron Carey keeps pulling stuff like this he’s going to make it too easy for us. His buddy Triple A is going to pop a blood vessel.
So this Carey doesn’t think we like “out-of-staters”…
1) He must be talking about Coleman! Who is the ACTUAL NON-Minnesotan, if we have some kind of litmus test.
2) Cut to the chase: Is there anything this Carey guy likes that doesn’t have an “R” & walks lockstep ? Of course not.
3) Nice of him to tell me what I think.
4) Minnesotans don’t like being treated like they need a Carey-daddy telling them what to think.
5) I don’t know if this is the same guy I saw Matt from this site countering on channel 2 - if it IS, the label said he was from “Minnesota Democrats Exposed” which doesn’t sound the least bit “User Friend;y.” Instead it sounds like a tabloid I would be amused by in the checkout line.
Who is this Ron Carey telling ME who is good enough?
Who does Ron Carey think he is?? “We don’t like ‘Out-Of-Staters’ crap comment is just that, CRAP!!!
Newly retired Congressman Gil Gutknecht was from Iowa. Tim Walz is from Nebraska. Does this mean that neither man was/is qualified to represent Minnesota??
This is typical of the hypocritical comments coming from the GOP of late.
I agree with Carey’s hypocrisy, but I do have to say that the point should not be overlooked.
Personally, I have been disappointed in the number of out-of-staters that run for political office in MN.
Particularly those like Norm (Al would qualify for this too) who don’t live here long, or just long enough to establish their MN cred. and then run for a federal seat so they can move back out of the state.
Lets get some real Minnesotans in our seats.
On the Al front, lets see how much he truly loves and wants to live in MN. Hers is an idea:
Instead of a “no-new-tax” pledge, lets start making politicians sign “I will live in the state pledge”. Which would require a candidate to live in the state for 10 years after they sign the pledge. So that they must stay in the state for a decade even if they lose (if they win, obviously they just have to keep residency for 6yrs, but if they lost after their first term they would still have to stay in the state for 4 yrs after).
If Al, truly cares about MN, and not just being a senator, then lets see him sign that.
My guess is that once he loses either in the primary (hopefully) or in the general (norm will spank him), Mr. Franken will be boarding a plane to NY.
Chris that’s really not too bad of an idea.
For Dan’s sake, here is the correction: Franken was indeed not born in the state. He was moved here by his father who came here to open a business that didn’t do so hot. His parents worked their asses off so that they could achieve a basic lower/middle class lifestyle, something vast swathes of the population can’t today, thanks to other out-of-towners listed in the rest of this discussion.
Norm is going to get handed his carpet-bagging ass!
This is an old thread -
but seemed as good a place as any…
I was just wondering if one of our new transplants isn’t “Texas Justice” - coming to a Republican Convention near you.
ala TRUE carpetbagger KLEIN.
His office in Burnsville called the cops on people coming to his office & seeking an audience with him.
Every other representative’s office so “assailed” managed quite well, by having the rep or an aide meet with the people, INSTEAD of calling in the cops!
