Save Us Al!

I’ll admit it. Global warming scares me.

I’m one of these guys that likes the cold. I love the snow. Its not just skiing and throwing snowballs at Matt’s head, I just like to be cold. It makes me feel alive.

Global Warming MN Tree MapI also like trees. And if you check out these extremely depressing maps from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, you’ll see that there are going to be fewer trees when the whole climate change thing happens.

If you are really in the mood for some serious depression, go to this website. It’s Minnesota and Global Warming 101 prepared by the MPCA. You hear a lot about what climate change will do to small islands in the Pacific or Western Europe (hint: flood the former and freeze the latter) but not as much about what is going to happen here. • The best damn thing we can do about this urge Norm Coleman to do what he does best, flip-flop his way back onto the right side of the debate on global warming. There needs to be a strong cap set on carbon emissions, something like what Boxer is calling for in the Senate. He needs to realize that in order to get re-elected, he has listen to his constituency, most of whom want something done at the federal level that really combats global warming in a big way, and they want it done yesterday!

Of course, nobody wants him re-elected, but if he really is desperate enough to think he can get re-elected in this climate - pun intended - he MUST come out on the side of the people, not the energy monopolies.

  • “Because evaporation is likely…”

I remember being a kid (in the early 80s) and making snow forts I could stand up in. Now, the snow doesn’t stay on the ground as long.

I’ve heard Paul Douglas testify on the Capitol about this (snow accumulation, not snow forts) and it genuinely scared the hell out of me too. By the time we go through the usual business-friendly Conservative-lite solutions, they’ll all be melted (the businesses, not conservatives).

  • These days even the “energy monopolies” are lining up are in favor of capturing the true cost of greenhouse gases in the form of a capped market based trading system.

Unless Coleman starts actively promoting an emissions market, he will be left alone out in the cold.

    ….unfortunately, I meant that pun.

PS: Ideally, any trading system would have a cap or “ceiling” as well as a “floor”.

  • Hmmm…

Well, let’s see, if you bloggers and commenters are really serious about doing something about global warming, for starters, you could quit using your electricity-sucking computer to post comments about how anxious you are about global warming.
