In the post
below I detail how the MN GOP disingenuously represented Al Franken by issuing a release titled “The Facts About Al Franken” and including quotes from his books that described clearly fictitious events. Now, I say “clearly” fictitious because it seems pretty clear from the quote that Al is joking but
I guess the GOP is more convincing than I thought because some of the comments still cling to the idea that there is a Hartford State Technical College and that Franken gave a commencement speech there. The funniest part? One of the comments cites this
article as proof of the reality of the situation. Problem is, the article opens like this:
RUSSERT: Why is the — Dr. Al Franken? It says right here, ‘PhD, honorary,’ from Hartford State Technical College.
Mr. FRANKEN: Yes. That is just one of the lies in the book.
RUSSERT: It’s made up.
Mr. FRANKEN: Yeah, yeah. There’s — I — I go with some comic comceit — conceits in this, and one of them is that I ha — won an honorary doctorate, so that I could pose as an honorary doctorate.
… is this really that tough to understand? The MN GOP deceptively implied that Franken gave a speech that never ever happened at a college that doesn’t exist.
I’ll answer a question the left likes to ask: What would Wellstone do?
One thing Wellstone wouldn’t is lampoon people who go to technical colleges.
I tip my hat to Matt for highlighting Franken’s joke made at the expense of people who attend technical colleges. Please Matt, keep posting about this.
I encourage people to visit MNSCU’s website http://www.mnscu.edu/media/publications/pdf/2006_amazingfacts.pdf
and read about the large number of Minnesotans who have attended a technical college.
Thanks Matt, your doing a great servive by posting about Franken’s jokes.
That should read: “One thing Wellstone wouldn’t do is lampoon people who go to technical colleges.”
and “Thanks Matt, you’re doing a great service by posting about Franken’s jokes”
Sorry for the typos, I was just so happy that Matt posted again about Franken’s jokes made at the expense of people who attend technical colleges.
Have you read the book Mike — or do you just repeat ad nauseum from GOP talking points.
Sean | Hoping for yes to the first, expecting yes for the second.
Sean: I’ll buy you dinner if you can provide an example of Senator Wellstone making fun of people who attend technical colleges?
The estimated 369,000 Minnesota students each year in credit and noncredit courses at technical colleges and the roughly 32,000 yearly graduates of technical colleges in Minnesota are waiting for your answer.
…and the 9,000 firefighters and emergency first responders who attend Minnesota technical colleges are also waiting for your answer.
…and the 92 percent of the state’s law enforcement officers who attended a Minnesota technical college are also waiting for your answer.
Matt, thanks again.
I’ll answer your question, when you answer mine.
Smoochies. Sean
Yes, I have read this portion of the book. These opinions are my own.
Now answer my question.
Since we’re talking about technicalities here and arguing over small points.
Is Franken lying about having given a speech at HSTC? or is Franken lying about having recieved a honorary doctorate at HSTC?
The thing I can’t figure out is why Brodkorb is throwing out all this Franken dirt now. If he was smart, he would save it for after Franken has secured the nomination. The DFL might just figure out how bad a candidate Franken is and nominate someone else.
And Matt, if we have to do that much explaining Franken’s statement, we’ve already lost. The GOP isn’t going to care that Franken was using satire, and a lot of people aren’t ever going to figure that out. Franken is not only going to get crushed by Coleman, he’s going to be a national embarassment.
Its pretty rich for someone like Bordkorb to be citing Wellstone, but he is right. Even if Franken was making a joke, his joke was making fun of technical college students. Paul Wellstone would not approve.
John — There is no Hartford State Technical College. That is the joke.
I actually thought he was making fun of himself, not technical colleges.
I await for the day the GOP actually attacks Franken on something political that the majority of the people in MN don’t agree with him on. I think I’ll be waiting for quite awhile. Until then, I guess I’ll have to settle for something that matters less than receiving blowjobs, as the true measure of Franken won’t be what he says about technical college graduates, but what he supports policy-wise and how it affects them.
The GOP doesn’t want to talk about issues because they can’t win with issues. Luckily for them, if Al Franken is the nominee, they don’t have to - they can just make the campaign about Al Franken. If the DFL wants the campaign to be about issues (and wants to have any hope of beating Coleman) it needs to run a credible candidate.
Jesus Christ, Brodkorb, you and your ilk are pathetic. Why can’t you engage in honest to god discussion? You people simply cannot be as idiotic as your comments suggest. You are purposefully misleading and disingenuous. It’s really sad that you are so willing to lower the level of discourse in Minnesota. I simply can’t take how disgusting you are. I feel bad for your wife.
Not only do Conservacraps have no sense of humor, they can’t understand it at all. (Wikidictionary: MBB=wanker)
After thinking about it, I realized we should all follow Mr. Brodkorb’s example of good taste and politeness in Internet usage.
After all, he would NEVER let MDE become a collection of poo-poo jokes posted at the expense of people with serious, chronic illnesses, would he? Oh, wait … I guess he did.
Franken will do fine as long as he restricts his interviews to lefty writers and his appearances to moonbats audiences.
But sooner or later, he’ll have to answer to people who do not agree that someone gets to consistently spew inane insults and then claim “I joke..”
Satire is not a license to make an ass of yourself Al.
Heh. Russert previews the optimum question when interviewing angry Al Franken (or any moonbat for that matter):
“Russert: Now is that true?”
MN Publius, you’re just burying yourself deeper and deeper. You have people actually convinced that there is no Hartford State Technical College, when in fact the fine institution has been around in various forms since 1946.
http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/chronology.htm
I also can’t believe you actually have highlighted Franken admitting he’s a liar:
Mr. FRANKEN: Yes. That is just one of the lies in the book.
The next question is, what are the other lies in Franken’s books?
MN Publius,
I re-read your post and I am NOT going to let you GET AWAY with saying that the Hartford State Technical College never existed. Here is a link to the institution’s history:
http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/history.htm
Using your pathetic logic, you could say that Mankato State University doesn’t exist either. It does exist - just under a new name MSU-Mankato.
Al Franken admits in his book that he is a liar and MN Publius is one too.
Someone please tell me that Franken is kidding about running for Senate. Because if he’s the nominee, Coleman is going to crush him. He’s going to have to spend the whole campaign explaining that his past comments were satire.
