Joe’s hit the nail directly on the head:
Rachel Paulose’s failings are her own, and we will learn more about them in the coming weeks. But don’t let Norm Coleman off the hook, either. He had at least nine months to review Paulose’s experience for all aspects of the job into which she was thrust. Being disappointed in her performance doesn’t absolve the Senator from his responsibility for helping confirm her appointment.
Senator Coleman should assume that responsibility, and accept that it is himself, and not only Paulose, in whom he should be disappointed.

My fear is that they’ll appoint (thankfully former Rep.) Jeff Johnson US Attorney when LalaPalousa quietly takes reassignment to Washington. Folks, you think it’s partisan now, just wait to see what it will be like thereafter. If the Prez wants a quiet pick, there is one Republican out there that the Democrats would stomach for the remainder of Bush’s term, A.M. “Sandy” Keith. I know he’s old and probably senile, but from what I’ve seen, competence isn’t necessarily a requirement for appointment.
Sandy Keith is a Democrat, and was actually a DFL State Senator.
Sandy Keith was the Chief Justice of the Minnesota State Supreme Court. He may also have been Lt. Governor, but I could be mistaken. Definitely a DFLer and a hell of a nice guy.
He’s a DINO if at all, he serves on the board of the Center for the American Experiment, endorses GOP candidates, gave Carlson the Governor’s office, read your history folks
Ioannes,
You mean you really would have wanted to disinfranchise all of the Republican voters in the state by keeping Carlson off the ballot? If that’s the case, it shows that Democrats don’t want fair elections, you want to win at any cost.
Also, Perpich didn’t lose because Carlson was on the ballot. Perpich lost because he was a disaster of a governor and passed on a multi billion dollar budget deficit.
Chris,
The accusation that you are making about fair elections makes me laugh.
Win at any cost is the Republican mantra!
Chris,
I agree, Carlson won, and he was a far better Governor (pragmatic and centrist - the last great Governor we’ve had) than the swimming pedophile would have been. But the reality is that Keith’s recent actions, affiliations, and endorsements reflect an increasingly conservative shift. I just threw his name out there as a Republican that the old guard DFL would find acceptable.
On a side note, though not necesarily relevant to this conversation, Perpich never spoke to Keith after he handed down the decision on the ballot. Anger is the dubius luxury of normal men, and tragic really.
Ioannes,
I agree with you that Keith has not affiliated with the current liberal majority of DFLers. Although I think Sandy Keith would say that the DFL left him, not the other way around.
I don’t think Carlson was a bad governor, but I wouldn’t call him a great governor either. His centrism led caused him to raise the sales tax from 6.0% to 6.5% during the 1991 budget crisis. The sales tax increase was supposed to be temporary until the deficit went away. That centrism has had us paying 16 years for the 1991 budget deficit. His centrism also led him not to build any roads for 8 years. Although he was good to both education and the U of M.
Fred,
If winning at any cost is the Republican mantra, and if Republicans stole the last two Presidential elections, why didn’t we steal the 2006 elections too? No, winning at any cost is the DFL mantra. Like saying they weren’t going to raise taxes before the election and hitting us with $5 billion in tax increases after the election. Or like saying before the election that pulling out of Iraq would be a disaster and then after the election trying to make the President pull out of Iraq. I’ve never seen a group of politicians run away from their campaign promises faster than the current bunch of Democrats.
Chris,
Karl Rove had his math and said that the Republicans would keep both houses of congress. It looked like he knew that a fix was in. Too bad for him the math conisited of a few equasions that he was not ready to answer.
Politicians are trying to get the president to determine what a safe self sustaining Iraq would look like, establish benchmarks to make it self sustaining and safe then get the troops out. If he cannot commmit to that then the only responisble thing to do is for congress cut off the funding redeploy the troops and let the iraqi people determine it’s own future.
Personally, I did not hear a single politician say they were or were not going to raise taxes. I think that after the last session where we were handed a tax (I mean “fee”) you could not find a single person running in either party saying they were not going to raise taxes.
Frankly it is irresponisble to state that you would either raise or lower the tax burden for anyone. No one can forsee what may happen to things like the economy, wages, jobs, etc. etc. etc.
But you are a party hack and parrot here what they say to you.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with putting Carlson on the ballot. The Democrats did in New Jersey after Torricelli imploded.
fred,
You are an ignorant slut. Oops, I guess that was Jane who was the ignorant slut. Anyway, you apparently are as uninformed as the rest of the kool aid drinkers here. Because on August 29, 2006 Margaret Anderson Kelliher said on the steps of the Capitol that the House DFL weren’t going to raise income taxes. On November 29, 2006, Tom Bakk (Senate DFL Tax Chairman) said in a joint statement with Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Assistant Senate Majority Leader Tarryl Clark that they were not considering any tax increases. On June 12, 2006, Mike Hatch said in the Star Tribune that he was going to address spending on education and health care. He said he could invest in those programs without raising taxes. Put down the Kool Aid fred and read a newspaper once in awhile.
Chris,
You republican tool.
They try to steal elections. When they fail, you clowns resort to claims of voter fraud (prove it) and tax increases (necessary IMO.)
That was then, this is now. Hatch is not governor so tax increases will have to be negotiated between the seperate branches.
Personally, I have no problem with them raising taxes.
fred,
You’re a complete jackass. Fitting, since that’s your party’s mascot. You want tax increases, then pay them. But keep your grubby little hands out of my wallet.
Chris,
Not my party.
If you don’t like what is happening in the state, then move and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
fred,
If you don’t like George W. Bush or the Iraq war, then leave and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. I hear Canada and France will take anybody.
Sir, you are a meathead - dead from the neck up!
Chris,
The joy of being an American is I can hate my president and his policies and do it from the comfort of my home in Minnesota.
I would suggest that if you are such a lover of GWB and his Iraq disaster that you enilst in the army and sign on the dotted line. Then go over to Iraq and show the Iraqi people some GWB lovin. I hear the Army is running low on personel.
As for the “meathead” and “ignorant slut” comments…
Put down the cheetos, push your fat ass away from the tv for a little while and get outside. Seriously.
“I myself feel that our country, for whose Constitution I fought in a just war, might as well have been invaded by Martians and body snatchers. Sometimes I wish it had been. What has happened, though, is that it has been taken over by means of the sleaziest, low-comedy, Keystone Cops-style coup d’etat imaginable. And those now in charge of the federal government are upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka “Christians,”and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities.” — Kurt Vonnegut, January, 2003
…and so it goes.
All roads and threads lead to Vonnegut
fred,
Funny how you can sit your own fat ass in front of a computer and tell me that if I don’t like the billions of dollars in proposed tax increases that I should go move somewhere else but then you get pissed off when I suggest that if you don’t like Bush or his policies you can leave America. I guess what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander, which explains why all you liberal Democrats tell the rest of us to live our lives one way when you live your own lives another.
At least you admit you hate Republicans. You fit in well with the rest of the ignorant bastards on the left that sit in front of their computers and slander our country.
Chris,
I am not pissed off about anything you have said. So far you have called me a meathead, an ignorant slut, a jackass and now an ignorant bastard. Frankly, I am quite amused.
I was not serious when I suggested that you move from the state.
I was serious when I said you should join the military and go fight in Iraq. Go and fight for your beliefs in a secure Iraq. GWB would be proud. Your refusal to join up makes me question your patriotism.
I am critical of the current administration and it’s abuse of America. If you call that slander than I am guilty. Sue me.
