I wasn’t going to make a big deal about it because, hey, everyone makes mistakes and it’s not like this is the biggest fine in the history of the MN Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board, but some former SD38 GOP chair is making a fuss about it, so here we go.
The Minnesota Republican Party failed to identify an independent expenditure they made on behalf of Phil Krinkie resulting in a $3000 Campaign Finance violation fine:
Separately,
the board fined the state Republican Party $3,000 for using the wrong disclaimer on a brochure produced on behalf of Phil Krinkie , who was running for reelection to the state House. [AP]
Two thoughts on this:
- Given that this is a party representing an entire state and not just one candidate, I think this fine is more significant than that filed against Mike Hatch (which was for the same amount)
- The reporting on this was tremendously lop-sided. The fines were the same amount but Hatch’s fine got 5 paragraphs and the MN GOP got 1 paragraph at the very end of the article.
I certainly hope that Ron Carey begins paying more attention to the finances of the party he runs; if not for the State of MN, then at least for the future of his chairmanship…

This sort of thing will not happen when Joe Repya is in charge…..
The Strib’s coverage of the story struck me as almost comically one-sided. Is it overcaution at being thought biased, or did they just not want to deal with the inevitable tirades from wingnuts if they gave the two stories the same amount of coverage?
