Ciresi Unveils YouTube Channel, McCollum Endorsement Video

Senate candidate Mike Ciresi unveiled his YouTube Channel this week and among the slew of clips from his announcement speech is a video of Congresswoman Betty McCollum endorsing Ciresi. I find her endorsement a very interesting one politically because it comes so early in the race. It seems as though McCollum is attempting to bring attention to the Ciresi camp as a way to preempt Franken dominance. But, then again, maybe I’m reading into it too much… Either way, here’s the video endorsement:

This is just the beginning - all of the major DFL players are going to come out for Ciresi.

I agree that most will endorse Ciresi. They have to support the machine that got them where they are. That and Franken is huge potential liability.

Public official endorsements are, for the most part, irrelevant. The public officials would love to think that their opinion matters but, let’s face it, most of us don’t care who Betty or Keith Ellison or Margaret Kelliher or Larry Pogemiller are supporting. It simply doesn’t matter much even to the active people who care at this point.

The race will be decided by the party activists and then, likely, the small part of the general public that bothers to go to primaries. Also, the money will factor in but neither Cirisi nor Franken will have any problems raising it.

I should add that endorsements do matter rarely. Randy Kelly’s being the most obvious example.

I disagree with the idea that endorsements don’t matter (ok, Larry Pogemiller’s endorsement doesn’t matter). I think people do listen to what McCollum or Ellison have to say, and more importantly, its not just these elected officials, but their political machines (including “party activists”) that will get behind a candidate.

    Eric:

I completely agree. Arrogant politicians are fooling themselves if tey think anyone cares about who they’re supporting.

Minnesotans are smart and independent. They’ll pick their own candidate.

“preempt Franken dominance” - biased much!?

And endorsments do matter - otherwise, what is the point? Campaigns do this for a reason, proven reasons - it isn’t just for the fun of it.
McCollum is highly respected and well-like. I would imagine this will be a great talking point for the campaign as they are trying to persuade DFL delegates.

People that have made up their minds don’t care about endorsements but nobody is campaigning for those votes anyway. To second Dan’s point, the activists that come with the endorsements are very important and the endorsement is a blessing that they can go out and spread the word and still be welcome back into the fold when the time comes. Nobody wants THEIR activists thinking for themselves too much.

Neither Franken (blowhard) or Ciresi (huge chunks of money from legal settlements) excite me much. Is there a 3rd option coming?

Might be the year to vote for the independant candidate again.
