*Editor’s Note from Matt: The addition of Sean marks the end of our search for a new blogger. We very much appreciated the amazing level of response we received to our call for help and we’re glad that it has turned out so well. I hope that you all enjoy Sean as much as we have as we’ve gotten to know him, Zack and I think that he’ll be a great addition to the team.
My name is Sean Broom and I am a new blogger at MNPublius.
I’ll get it out of the way now because I know how you harpies are; I am not paid to blog, nor am I in the employ of any political candidate, cause or party. I am employed by the University of Minnesota and am at least by extension an employee of the state of Minnesota. I will not blog during my workday. I will discuss Higher Education funding with impunity. And I will inform the readers of this blog if any of these things change. I am currently listed somewhere as a John Edwards supporter, and I have not decided nor am I publicly supporting any candidate for Paul Wellstone’s Senate seat… yet.
Now that we have all of that unpleasant stuff out of the way:
I was raised a Republican. And not just any Republican but a government-hating, gun-toting, redneck southern Republican. I’m no longer a Republican and I don’t hate the government but I still like guns and will be a redneck till the day I die. My political and personal heroes are Michael Collins, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and Hubert Humphrey. I can recite at length passages from HHH’s speech to the 1948 DNC and I credit it largely with my road to Damascus conversion to a Democrat.
I’m the immediate past chair of the Minnesota Young DFL, and currently I am one of the DFL’s directors. This means I will be a delegate to next summer’s endorsing convention and I look forward to sharing with and engaging all of you on the road to sending Nahm Coleman into retirement so he can spend more time with his wife… in California.
I like to cook, talk about music and read incredibly long mind numbingly boring books. And I will take all comers in marathon cut-throat sessions of Axis and Allies.
To Democracy,
Sean

Awe man… Where do I begin?
Damn good pick though, MN Publius…
Shit. This will be good.
congrats, Sean
now there’s class, thanks Veritas for yet again proving the right wing are classless jerks.
congrats Sean. look forward to reading your work.
Congrats Sean! Looking forward to reading your stuff. Hope all has been well with you.
Looks like Chris has met his match. You go Sean!!
MN Publius has just gotten more interesting. Let the Games Begin!!!
Sean, glad to have you blogging here. It’ll be fun!
FYI, I intend to ensure that you get your proper credit for the whole “Norm Coleman has a sail for a backbone” thing. You da man!
Congrats Sean!
Nice addition.
Congratulations Sean! -Aaron
Congrats!
Just a couple of questions Sean. Allman Bros. or Grateful Dead? Los Loney Boys or Los Lobos? Coke or Pepsi? Should there be a provision for a Concealed and Carry permit for swords? And if so, western or eastern style?
Richard:
Allman v. GD: Allmans
Los Lonely Boys v. Los Lobos: Is this actually a question? Not to be dismissive, but Los Lonely Boys aren’t even in the same league, the same solar system as Los Lobos. LLB haven’t shown themselves to be the songsmiths that LL are and they haven’t had nearly 30 years of making amazing AMERICAN music. Kiko is one of my all time favorite albums and How Will The Wolf Survive is a classic.
Coke v. Pepsi: Coke, but it should be noted that I have stopped drinking all soda in an effort to slim down for my impending doom… I mean wedding. My impending wedding.
Conceal and Carry: I mean hey, if you can conceal ‘em, carry ‘em. And a sword’s a sword in my book. Doesn’t matter if it can cut a silk scarf or is just more of a hacking instrument same basic principle.
And thank you to everyone else for your best wishes and support, I’m excited about this opportunity and look forward to writing on here. Sean
Sean!!
With you being a recovering Republican who has found the truth and light, perhaps you will be able to challange some stubborn GOPers who frequent this place on their spin on issues.
Congrats! I look forward to excellent content.
MNPublius and Sean Broom? It’s like Lennon/McCartney, Abbott & Costello, Gin and Tonic! Congrats, and good luck with the whole soda/doom thing.
Congrats!
Glad to see another Axis and Allies fan, so the big question, UK, USA, Germany, or Japan? Would love to play against you any time.
Allman Bros. Grateful Dead? Whichever show you’re at, at the time.
Los Lonely Boys v Los Lobos? Can’t disagree with anything you said except LLB can drop into a perfect, transengental, Tex-Mex blues thing that surpasses sublime.
And finally, since I consider the current situation with concealed carry permits for handguns a fad for man jewelry, swords would provide a greater outlet for artistic expression. An added benefit would be instead of reading in the local city section of the paper how police broke up a bar fight, you could read how they broke up a bar sword fight.
Roseville Dem:
Im currently in a 3 player game where I am playing as the Russians and the Americans while one friend plays the UK and another the Axis powers.
I have to say that I don’t know the value of Russia in the game other than cannon fodder (much like reality) and I’m happy with my production capability as America. But if I had my druthers in a real competitive game I’d prefer to be the Allies and if I had to choose England, because although it has so much territory to defend it can jump right in the fight and put Jerry on the run. Sean
Way to go Sean! Will you be blogging your wedding?
Clare — What happens in Central Wisconsin, stays in Central Wisconsin. Sean
Sean-
I agree with your choices on A&A, USA and U.K. are my favorites to play. USA because of all the IPC’s and U.K. like you said because it can get straight into the fight with Hitler.
You should be a great read, with full blog rights, Sean.
Congrats to Sean Broom on his recent annoucement of marriage.
