Here we go!

Remember back in February when Republicans were crowing about a Survey USA poll that had both Franken and Ciresi down by 20pts? A new poll came out today.

Coleman 49%
Franken 42%

Coleman 48%
Ciresi 42%

A single digit race and the incumbent is under 50% - hold onto your britches, we’ve got oursevles a ballgame!

A couple other troubling signs for Norm -

* He now trails among moderates 42-50 to Ciresi and 44-49 to Franken

* A big gender gap has broken out. Norm loses women 38-50 to Ciresi and 42-50 to Franken

* Norm is still drawing higher than expected percentages in certain demographics (47% on the Iron Range?), meaning I think his number is still soft.

A quick sidenote: Michael Brodkorb has spent the last six months trashing Al Franken only to see Franken pick up 7 pts in the polls. It looks like Michael is trying to duplicate the success he had on the Kennedy campaign.

Ellison Trip To Iraq Round Up

ellison1.jpgRepresentative Keith Ellison returned from a trip to Iraq organized by SecDef Robert Gates, heres a smattering of the coverage.

Still A War Foe, Ellison Sees Some Progress In Trip To Iraq

“Rep. Keith Ellison headed home from a weekend trip to Iraq on Monday describing cooperation among Iraqi police, local communities, U.S. soldiers and Muslim imams, and a “general sense of calm.”

Ellison said his position against the war has not changed but he returned from Iraq with both praise and criticism for a complicated situation.”

Ellison is part of Iraq trip arranged by Defense Chief

Ellison, a first-term Minneapolis Democrat and a longtime critic of the war, is part of an all-freshman bipartisan congressional delegation traveling to the region at Gates’ invitation. Ellison plans to stop in Germany this morning and hopes to meet with wounded soldiers there….

Since Ellison’s election, his religion has been at the forefront of his political image in Washington. Ellison met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice several times about bolstering America’s image in the Muslim world. Rice recently requested another meeting, but she canceled because she was called to the White House.

Ellison returns from trip to Iraq

Ellison, D-Minn., said he met in Ramadi in Anbar province with the two sheiks, who oversee several hundred thousand congregants.

“They were very upset and concerned that al-Qaeda is misrepresenting Islam,” Ellison told reporters on a conference call Monday from Germany, on his way back to the U.S. “And they were talking to me about what I can possibly do to work with them to give a clearer, more accurate picture of what Islam is all about.”

Ellison said he would assist in any way he can. He is already helping a State Department outreach effort aimed at improving the image of the U.S. in the Muslim world.

And not related to his trip to Iraq — but none the less, showing the support Representative Ellison has given our Government, an article from the VOA about Keith meeting with female Muslim leaders from around the world.

“Ellison won his seat in Congress last year. And as a former community activist, he sought to inspire the women with a message. “That civic engagement is very important, that the voices from the communities are indispensable to democracy, that their voices are important, that they should help inspire and make a way for other people to get out there and say what they think should be the policy of the state. And that there is a lot to be offered in peace, justice, environmental policy, health care and certainly women’s issues are very important for all of us to be concerned about.”“

Oberstar’s Favorite Song “Bicycle Race” By Queen

jlo2bike1_2.jpgSo, the well tread joke (it’s not particularly funny) is that there are more miles of biking trails in the 8th Congressional district than roads and it’s because Jim Oberstar wants a bike trail in exchange for every appropriation that goes through his committee.

A light rail line for you, a bike trail for me. A highway expansion for you, a bike trail for me.

That is clearly not how it works, it just seems that way sometimes.

The Strib picked up on his two-wheeled shenanigans.

Oberstar can rattle off details about northern Minnesota’s cycling trails with uncanny ease, describing scenic overlooks from Baxter to Bemidji. He has his schedule timed perfectly so that when he lands in the Twin Cities on weekend trips home, a connecting flight will get him to Chisholm in time for an hour-and-a-half ride on the Mesabi Trail before the sun goes down…. Oberstar estimated that he has helped win funding and approval for at least 60 trails nationwide

Draz Sues Republicans, Shunned By Party Leaders

draz_home_photo.jpg

In the coverage of the 28B special election at the token Republican attack blogs they’ve been hammering away at Linda Pfeilsticker pretty hard.

But one thing is noticeably absent. No one seems to be talking about Steve Drazkowski her opponent.

Now, why could that be? Could it be that Drazkowski has a checkered past where he avoided trying to pay child support, insulted the party leadership, and even sued Republican party employees? Could be.

In 2005 Drazkowski was arrested for assaulting his daughter during a domestic dispute; in 2006 he ran for the Republican endorsement in the District 28 State Senate race. Meg Walch was Sen. Dick Day’s personal choice in the race and several employees of the Senate Republican Caucus volunteered for Walch’s campaign, they produced a flier and distributed it to the Republican endorsing convention attendees. They labeled a post from our good friend Northern Debater’s blog “Senate Candidate Abuses Daughter, Still Running” as having actually come from Winona Daily News (the flier can be found here, in the judgment from the complaint — which I’m getting to).

What does this tell us? That if you absolutely, positively have to anonymously slander your opponent, hit up some Young Republicans. But back to the topic at hand.

After seeing the anonymous hit piece Drazkowski sued the Senate Caucus employees who made the flier and he made unfounded allegations that Sen. Dick Day (who was the Senate Caucus leader at the time) knew about the mailing! The complaint was thrown out because it was frivolous and Senator Dick Day said this about Drazkowski,

“(Drazkowski) is a guy who’s just disgruntled,” Day said Monday. “He makes me nervous, but what do you do? I’m just glad it’s over with, and ready to move on to something else.”

The endorsed Republican candidate in the race said that the complaint was a “disgraceful attempt by Mr. Drazkowski to gain traction in his primary bid.”

And Ron Carey? He though that with “With today’s dismissal of Steve Drazkowski’s frivolous complaint, it’s time for him to finally do the right thingdrop out of the race.”

Of course, he didn’t. He won the primary and went on to be crushed by Senator Steve Murphy.

And things aren’t any better the second time around, the MN GOP’s website isn’t asking that people donate to Drazkowski, instead that they donate to the GOP (and we all know how well thats gone before) and although he took down the quotes page since we posted about it who can forget about the ringing endorsements that the Minnesota GOP got from the Drazkowski and his supporters?

“I’m more convinced each day that Steve Drazkowski will make a great State Senator... Draz’s courage in standing up to… the poor judgment of his own political party demonstrates what we all should look for in our leaders.” - John Adams (Former Republican Party State Vice Chair)

So in the future if you’re curious why Mike Michael Brodkorb isn’t posting anything positive about Drazkowski, why don’t you ask Brodkorb’s former boss?

“(Drazkowski) is a guy who’s just disgruntled. He makes me nervous, but what do you do?”
Sen. Dick Day (R-Owatonna)

This special election is going to be important. Linda Pfielsticker, the DFL endorsed candidate is a popular High School teacher, and I think given her opponents record and the record of the Republican party recently in special elections, we can count on her to be part of the growing DFL majority in the Minnesota State House.

I’m going to open the comments to suggestions for Drazkowski’s campaign slogan — my suggestion?

Rep. Ellison in Newsweek

KeithRepresentative Keith Ellison was asked to go to Iraq this week by SecDef Robert Gates and we’ll have more on that as it gets reported, but Keith also wrote a great piece in the Washington Post about religious freedom.

The line “Whole days‚ even weeks ‚ have gone by without me being asked to speak on behalf of the 1.3 billion Muslims in the world.” was delivered without a hint of irony (‘cause I would have had field day with that “No one is asking Amy Klobuchar what it’s like be a Slovenian American — but yet whole days, and even weeks have gone by without me being asked to speak on behalf of 1.3 billion Muslims!”) and his unmitigated pride in and love for America is obvious throughout.

American Muslims are an asset to the country, not a threat. Unfair suspicion and profiling does not serve the national interest or honor our hard earned reputation as the beacon for civil and human rights around the world.

I can’t speak for every Muslim, but I remain confident and hopeful about the prospects for America’s Muslims because, in the end, America is about religious tolerance, inclusion, and fairness.

The whole piece can be found here.

My Last Day on Minnesota Matters

MmadSo, it’s my last day as Producer at Air America Minnesota as I’ll be moving onto UPenn Law soon, and I felt a post was warranted. The long sappy version is after the break, but I need to put a little promo above the break here. I designed the new Mark Heaney Show website and I’m pretty happy with how it looks. So, give it a glance and tune into the Mark Heaney Show on AM 950; it keeps getting better and better. If you’re in the mood for some sappy shout-outs and a little insight into the innards of AM 950, continue below the fold.

Minnesota’s Influence in Action

CornWe hear far too little about our state’s most influential Congressmen: Rep. Colin Peterson and Rep. Jim Oberstar. With Peterson as chair of the Ag Committee and Oberstar as chair of the Transportation Committee, Minnesota finds itself in a position of unprecedented influence in Congress. These two Representatives bring millions (if not billions) of dollars of additional federal funding into our state that we wouldn’t see if they weren’t chairs. And their ability to mold key pieces of legislation to favor our great state is a priceless asset.

That influence is clear today as Representative Peterson’s Farm Bill passed out of the House. I just wanted to take a moment to recognize Rep. Peterson’s success and the contribution he’s made to this state. The DFL has issued a press release doing the very same thing except in a much more detailed and relevant fashion than I have; you’ll find it after the break.

BREAKING: Al Franken Snags New Endorsements

Well, Al certainly hasn’t been resting on his laurels. He’s announcing some new endorsements today and when you add them to the entire list, well, it’s impressive. The new names coming out today are DNC member Nancy Larson, Senator Keith Langseth (a great grab), Rep. Gene Pelowski Jr., Rep. Jeanne Poppe, Rep. Carolyn Laine, and Rep. Sandra Masin. The whole list is below the fold and I’ll hold out any further analysis until our resident state-endorsement-analyzer (Zack) gets off his laurels.

Senator Norm Coleman’s Father dies at 82

From the AP:

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The father of Sen. Norm Coleman, Norm Coleman Sr., died Thursday after a battle with cancer, the senator’s office said.

The elder Coleman was 82.

“During this time of grief, Sen. Coleman and his family ask for your thoughts and prayers,” said the senator’s spokesman, LeRoy Coleman. “As a decorated World War II veteran, he will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.”

Coleman is a first-term Republican senator from Minnesota.

We make no secret of the fact here at MNpublius that we gravely disagree with Senator Coleman’s politics in almost every manner but the loss of a loved one is a grievous situation that every human being can empathize with. Our hearts are out to Senator Coleman and his family in this time of mourning; we extend our sincere and deep condolences.

It is all too often in the continuous battle that is partisan politics that we lose a little bit of perspective of the sacrifices every one of our elected representatives make to serve. Regardless of our many and deep disagreements that we may have with Senator Coleman, he has given much of his life and himself to serve this nation. That, in of itself, requires acknowledgment. And it is something that I am sure gave his father much warranted pride.

No more Norm Coleman posts will appear here until next week in recognition of his loss. Please keep all comments respectful or they will be removed at my first opportunity.

Strib Reports on Norm’s Falling Approval Rating

Al Franken on Ed Schultz Really Soon

Al Franken will be appearing on the Ed Schultz today at 12:30. If you want to hear the interview tune into AM950 and listen to Big Eddie. And yes, I work at AM950 (although tomorrow’s my last day) so this is a nice little promotion.

Ciresi Slams Coleman

US Senate candidate Mike Ciresi released the following statement yesterday after the news broke that Norm Coleman’s approval rating has dipped into negative territory - only 43% of Minnesotans approve of Norm’s pandering and flip-flopping, while 48% disapprove.

We don’t put too much stock in polls, but it doesn’t surprise us that Minnesotans have had it with Norm Coleman. Senator Coleman chooses blind loyalty to President Bush and his failed policies rather than standing up for the people of this state. Coleman’s decline is a result of Minnesotans paying close attention to our elected officials and in Senator Coleman’s case, when he is put to the test of leadership, he fails. His job approval numbers have steadily declined since April and now his disapproval rating is higher than his approval rating.

This is a good example that a strong leader who gets results for the average person like Mike Ciresi is needed in the Senate. Mike Ciresi is not afraid to hold the powerful accountable when they’re wrong. He did it when Tobacco, Chemical and Drug Companies broke the law. Mike fights for what is right and he wins when the odds are against him.

This Senate seat needs to be held again by a person who is willing to risk this Senate seat to stand up and do what is right. Minnesota needs Mike Ciresi in this Senate seat as he is able to see the truth, stand up for it and not be fooled by powerful special interests.”

Ouch.

Holy… Klobuchar’s Approval at Record High

DFL on Coleman’s Numbers

The DFL just put out this press release and in it they provide a great breakdown of some of the key facts. He fell 19 points in southern Minnesota… ouch!

Read the whole release after the break. Seriously, take a look, these numbers are brutal.
