From the AP:
Al Franken’s DFL Senate campaign plunked down $37,000 for a full-page ad in Friday’s Star Tribune of Minneapolis that tries to link Senator Norm Coleman’s voting record in the Senate to President Bush’s unpopular Iraq war policy.
The high-profile attack is another sign that the political cycle is accelerating both in the race for Senate and president. Franken’s campaign already has $2 million in the bank and Coleman has nearly twice that.
Above a picture of Bush and Coleman standing arm-in-arm, the ad features a recent comment by Coleman, R-Minn.: “We are going to be in Iraq a long time.” Under the photo, the ad says, “Senator Norm Coleman stood with President Bush and voted against bringing our troops home. Again.”
That was a reference to a vote this week in which Senate Republicans blocked a final vote on a Democratic bill to force the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq.
The ad also includes this quote from Coleman: “When my colleagues on the other side of the aisle talk about redeployment, they are talking about getting out of Iraq. I’m not.”
The full page ad can be seen in its entirety here.

What a cheap publicity stunt of political theater. Or would that be theatre? I don’t know how Franken likes it… the correct American way (er) or the incorrect British/socialist way (re).
In any case, mad props to Sen. Coleman for sticking to his convictions. Unlike Franken, Coleman has never waivered, flip-flopped, or even marginally reconsidered his support of the war even in the face of overwhelming evidence that is has been a complete and abject failure (due to the incompetence and unseriousness of the Iraqi people and their elected representatives, of course).
FMB,
You forgot to blame Hilary Clinton.
Here is a phrase I saw somewhere that is guaranteed to stick to Norm and others like him (lordy, who could possibly be like him?!) no matter how liberally they apply the Teflon shield:
Bush Republican Norm Coleman (or)
Norm Coleman, who is a Bush Republican
Use it early and often.
bajonimi
Those phrases are what Minnesotans think of Norm already.
They stick very very well.
In the next 14 or 15 months, never ever mention Coleman without mentioning Bush and vice versa.
Will you boys please stop making fun of my Main Man, Georgie Boy? He is a perfectly wonderful pro-life, gay-hating man who has the courage to stick by his convictions, no matter how wrong he is. We all should have blind faith in his leadership like Norm does (or at least used to.)
Hey Michel! Nice to see you hittin up the intrawebs.
Tim from Woodburry, I omitted blame for Hillary for all our troubles because that just goes without saying. I mean, the Pentagon has already said as much. From CBS NEWS, even:
Game, set, match. Next!
Thanks for the welcome Fake Michael. My good friend Senator Stevens has been explaining all the little tubes that make up the internet and it is very cool.
Real Michael,
So so scared, all the time. You righties mold our countries foreign policy by what stupid assed talking points come out in George Bush’s stool. That’s fine, you righties can go ahead and act like a bunch of wussies.
We’ve got elections to win. A veto-proof Democratic majority and a Democratic President should be able to get some things done.
“Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia,”
This is making the assumption that any plan to pull out means we abandon everyone, and all the troops come home,…well that is not anyone’s plan. Your problem is you think, and wish, Democrats were that damn stupid. Of course, the Pentagon has become an arm of the RNC just like every Department in Washington. I can’t wait until 2008!
Coleman truly is Senator Norm W Bush.

Kinda funny lookin’.
I really don’t know why anyone thinks Norm has a chance. He sneaked his way into the position like the damn color-changing snake that he is, and for some incredibly (in the realest sense of the word) stupid reason, got re-elected. He is a silver spoon north easterner who ended up here on our soil, and he has never stood for anything other than staying in power. Just look at his voting record. The fact is, he cannot be called a loyal Bushie technically, because he has indeed voted against the party on several key votes. In fact he has done that just enough to try and fool the public that he actually has mind of his own in that smoke-filled head of his.
Minnesotan’s are sick of chumps like this. What we want is someone who more closely resembles the integrity, skill, and knowledge we had in Paul Wellstone. With Franken, Cirisi, and what’s the name of the environmental guy? We have no problem.
Michael B Brokorb,
“Coleman has never waivered, flip-flopped, or even marginally reconsidered his support of the war”
Let me refresh your memory about the Spring of 2003, Michael, when many of us supported the war.
9/11 was still fresh in eveyones memory. We were told by the MAINSTREAM MEDIA there was intelligence about the possibility of “mushroom clouds” over major cities. We all wanted to prevent another 9/11.
YOUR PARTY, and the Republicans who we live next door too, all pushed and pushed and pushed. Anyone who disagreed with the push to war in Iraq was labeled a “traitor”. There were blogs HERE IN MINNESOTA where people frequently commented they wanted anyone objecting to the war either hung or deported. There was a HUGE amount of hubris as YOU REPUBLICANS and your army of pundits and bloggers pushed us forward to war.
FRANCE was boycotted, because they objected to the war. There were almost riots as righties clamored to smash French Wine bottles in the streets.
We all wanted the terrorists, Korby. We wanted justice. We wanted to be safe again. YOU REPUBLICANS took full advantage of that.
So now, years later, because Franked did what YOU wanted him to, you DARE use that fact as a CHEAP SHOT!!!?
I FIND YOU APPALLING in your HUBRIS!! This comment will be repeated until you get it!
Nitro:
I didn’t make the comments above. Please note the difference between someone claiming to be “Fake Michael Brodkorb” and me.
IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, MICHAEL, YOU HAVE BEEN PUSHING THE “FRANKEN FLIP-FLOP TALKING POINT.
What are you denying that now? My comment was directed at you, Michael. You who helped push America to war.
A comic for my friend Mike enjoys. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/jhuth/bizarro_real-life-vs-politics.jpg_550.jpg
Mikey…
It’s not looking good for the RNC…
Time to once again bring up Bill’s blow job.
