Norm Coleman just voted with his fellow Republican Senators to block consideration of the Levin-Reed Amendment, which would have started troop reductions in Iraq in 120 days.
The Franken Campaign just released this statement:
Franken Condemns Coleman’s Vote To Kill Bi-Partisan Effort To Bring Troops Home
“Norm Coleman had a choice today. He could have voted with a bi-partisan majority to bring our troops home from Iraq. Republican Senators from Maine, Nebraska, and Oregon did the right thing, stepping away from the President and voting to support the measure. But Norm Coleman stood in the way and voted to kill this bi-partisan effort.”
“We here in Minnesota send our Senators to Washington to stand up for our interests. And we want change in Iraq. But instead of standing up for us, Norm Coleman stood with George W. Bush.”
“Today could have been the beginning of the end of the war in Iraq. But thanks to the obstructionism of Norm Coleman and his allies in the George W. Bush camp, another day goes by without a plan to end this war and bring our troops home.”

Zach:
I thought Al Franken stopped being a comedian! It is laughable for Franken and his campaign to talk about bi-partisanship when Franken has made a living out of attacking Republicans. I find it difficult for anyone to believe Franken could ever work with Republicans.
Franken even claimed “Republicans are shameless d*cks”
Oh, and BTW: Franken wants to “…cut off funding for the troops.”
Booo, Hisss
Mr. Brodkorb — what was the name of your website, again? Does your newfound appreciation for bipartisanship mean that you will no longer be devoting yourself to relentless (and, for that matter, repetitive) attacks on Democrats?
Or do you just really, really hate Al Franken?
RANDY’s GREAT LINE:
Mr. Brodkorb
By the way - what’s with the big misdirection Korby’s trying to pull?
The topic is SMARMY COLEMAN killing a bipartisan effort.
Its COLEMAN whose behavior is under scrutiny, not a character assassination attempt by Korby!
Norm Coelman refuses to listen to the voices of Minnesotans running about 70% against continuing this war.Come November of next year, Minnesotans will remember this vote knowing when they needed Coleman to be for them and not the President, he was not on their side.
I think Coleman and korby are working together to help drown the republican Party in a bathtub. Their smarmy hubris is their downfall. I am looking forward to Senator Franken giving the great State of Minnesota a very large national voice.
Coleman pales in comparison, his voice is just that of a dittohead, nothing new, just tired old talking points repeated and repeated and repeated, over and over again, as if that makes them true. What a kjoetthue.
Well Franken might give his wealthy friends in Hollywood giving money to his campaign a voice anyway. Franken is just a guy, no different than the rest and will bend to the power in Washington as almost all others have done. Why would anybody think he of all people would be different? Everybody thinks their guy isn’t part of the problem, it’s everybody else. Typical big party supporter arrogance.
Kerosene, are you making an assumption that Al will not represent his constituency? I’ve heard what he has to say. He says he wants to represent Minnesotas working families.
What proof do you have that he won’t?
Also to call him “no different than the rest” is curious, I don’t understand that either. I’ve heard his campaign ads and he offers up a can of sarcasm whoop-ass like I haven’t heard too many people in Washington use. I think it’s safe to say there’s a few things about Al that are quite unique. Humor, especially political humor, is quite effective at making a point.
At least wait until the campaign really goes into high gear before judging him, we’ll all get to see what Al and all the fine Democratic candidates for Senator have to say about the issues. I can’t wait. They won’t be debating expensive haircuts, I promise you that.
Coleman, on the other hand, doen’t have much to offer other than more of the same. He is absolutely defined as being “no different than the rest”. Prove to me he’s not, he’s had six years to do something, anything, that represents us, the working people of Minnesota. What has he done?
I never defended Coleman, I just don’t find anything about Al that makes him worth supporting. Being funny doesn’t make him right and at worsts allows him to cover up ignorance, bad ideas or faulty logic. If I want to laugh I can read a book or watch the Daily show. Give me a person with a Phd in economics or somebody that has won a Nobel Prize before a comedian.
I think he won’t be different because of how he seemingly changes personalities depending on who he addressing. He seems to have a problem communicating through local media and which makes me think he has to control the room to be comfortable presenting his message. He also was not against the war before it began which to me is a sure sign of idiocy. That and out of the thousands of politicians who’s faithful claimed were different a tiny percentage have turned out to be. History and statistics make it a good bet.
In Franken’s response to Coleman’s vote Franken notes Coleman could have joined Republican Senators from other states - Maine was one of them. I wonder how moderate Senator Olympia Snowe would feel about serving with Al should he get elected…in Franken’s Lies and the Lying Liars book he writes:
“I am not currently having an affair with any Republican woman, but if I were, it would be with Maine senator Olympia Snowe, whom I respect for voting her conscience.”
Snowe is a dedicated Senator who has served her State well…but then Franken’s humor undermines this.
And Al will have a tough time explaining things he has said and written. I don’t want to have a “rough around the edges” guy for my US Senator! I don’t want somebody who diminishes groups and individuals - I want a Statesman or Stateswoman - somebody who has diplomatic skills and believes in the DFL platform so that he/she can get things done. If Franken becomes the endorsed DFL candidate (and that won’t surprise me - so many elected officials and groups have already signed on to support him and let’s face it the DFL hasn’t exactly been pushing skilled progressive diplomatic types - they kind of go for the obnoxious alpha male) anyway if Franken gets the endorsement this will simply affirm for the DFL it’s not civic service or ideas that matter - it’s about who has the most money and fame. Perhaps the most sobering reality is that two other candidates Jim Cohen and Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer offer clearer more progressive position statements than Franken and the media along with the DFL machine doesn’t seem to care. This is truly the era of the McCandidate - let’s throw the masses an individual who can raise lots of money and offer up a fast-food kind of unsubstantial message…
Here’s hoping Cohen and Nelson-Pallmeyer are considering other ways to get on the November 2008 ballot than through winning the DFL primary.
