Republicans can’t stop falling over themselves to try and paint Democrats with the “Congress is Unpopular” meme.
Close to home, the good news is that Tim Walz isn’t going to be tarred with that brush. The good news keeps rolling in from around his district.
Southern Minnesotans looking to have a face-to-face conversation with their congressman have found it to be an easier task in recent months…
“It’s just a core part of the job as far as I can tell,” said Walz, a former West High School geography teacher who won an upset victory in the Nov. 7 election. “And I don’t think I’ll ever change that.”
Since Walz took office in early January, he’s held 18 meetings in the 1st District where the public could attend to ask questions or offer comments about government policy or Walz’s performance….In addition, Walz has spent Saturday mornings hitting grocery stores and farmers markets in an attempt to reach people who don’t go to government meetings.
Finally, he holds open office hours where people can have brief meetings with the congressman and work with his staff on difficulties they might be experiencing with federal agencies. The fourth of those is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. on July 21 in his district office at 227 E. Main St. in Mankato
Walz’s approach stands in contrast to his predecessor. Former Congressman Gil Gutknecht rarely held open forums in the latter years of his 12-year tenure in Washington…
…. About 75 people showed up to the Summit Center Thursday afternoon. The crowd was mostly sympathetic to Walz political persuasion, and no one heckled the first-term Congressman.
“We do about one every nine days,” Walz said Thursday, moments after addressing the mostly senior Summit Center group. “I’m convinced this is the way the job is supposed to be done.”
‘He’s (Walz) going to take care of it,’ Ringgenberg said. ‘He’s a vet. He’s going to get it done.’
Congressman Tim Walz’ efforts to involve the public is laudable.
Thumbs up
To freshman Congressman Tim Walz who has done nothing yet to diminish his pre-election image as a man who will listen.
Walz says it’s a priority of his to hold regular meetings open to the general public and to seek input from people generally left out of the conversation. On Thursday, he listened to seniors at the Summit Center.
The former West High School geography teacher seems not to have lost support locally despite being part of a U.S. Congress saddled with extraordinarily high negative ratings. Walz is still getting mileage from a locally run television advertisement crediting him for raising the minimum wage (as if he alone were responsible), and although his favorability rating is sure to take a hit at some point, the honeymoon remains largely intact.
Walz’s common roots, his humility in claiming not to have all the answers, we surmise is encouraging him to gain information from a wide array of sources. He seems not to take anything he’s hearing for granted.
It is so damn awesome to see someone who works so hard, who cares so much, who deserves it, and who is genuinely doing so much good in Congress.

I don’t have a representative in Congress. Haven’t ever since John Kline was elected. So I’ve decided to adopt Tim Walz as my surrogate Congressman. Minnesota is very lucky to have this guy representing all of us. What a nice change!
Ok, so Walz has held public meetings. Big deal. Where the rubber meets the road is found in what Congress has accomplished. The answer to that question is practically nothing. In the first 6 months, they have spent more time re-naming Federal Buildings and National Parks than almost anything, except launching 300 investigations into the Bush administration. Is that the kind of representation voters wanted last November? I don’t think so.
When was Norm’s last public meeting? I guess I missed it.
Chripes Chris what planet do you live on? Your post is full of so many half truths and exaggerations I don’t even know where to start.
Why are you so whiny? Good grief we’ll see how much they get done the next six months. I could give you a very large list of what they’ve been doing in congress and you know it.
Did you even read what Tim Walz has been doing? Multiply that by how many decent people there are in Congress on both sides!
By ripping into Congress you rip on your own party, pally. I find that disgustingly partisan. “Rubber hits the road” is why your Republicans are in a minority in both public opinion and Representation. You are, by your actions, just uniting your opponents. But that’s a lot like Bush.
The great Uniter is quite a uniter indeed…..a uniter of those he opposes.
Nitro,
Congress has accomplished zilch in six months. The only item from the first 100 days that has passed was the minimum wage increase and that didn’t pass until a few weeks ago when it was attached to the Iraq funding bill. In the first 100 days, the only things passed by Congress were 26 public laws, of which 12 were bills to rename federal buildings, post offices and national parks.
Nitro, if Congress is doing such a great job, why are their approval ratings 10 points less than Bush’s? You dare to accuse me of being a partisan, pally? It’s getting to the point where your posts make no sense at all because you’ve gone over the edge to knee-jerk status. If I posted on here that the sky was blue, you would counter that the sky isn’t blue because Democrats are doing something in Washington, D.C. to turn the sky pink.
You aren’t saying anything new, Chris. Why do you keep repeating the same crap over and over?
Why is your Party dying, Chris? Because the people don’t buy your crap anymorre.
By the way, if I believed in stupid false arguments, I’d be exactly like you, Chris.
Get lost.
In addition, I have already specifically rebutted your arguments in the past, and you act like it went in one ear and out the other.
Why do you keep repeating your false talking points over and over and over? Repeating them doesn’t make them any more true, pally.
Einstien defined insanity as repeating the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That sounds like the summary of the Republican party the last 4 years….yah pretty much.
Nitro,
You are a meathead, dead from the neck up. You’ve never rebutted any of my arguments because you can’t think. All you can do is flame me. Well no thanks - you are now under permanent ignore status.
P.S. Nitro,
Quoting Einstein (incorrectly at that - he said “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity”) does not make you intelligent.
LOL “perment ignore”…wow my loss.
You forced my hand, pally.

Energy and environment programs: legislation increasing funding for basic science research at the Department of Energy and for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
Next up: Impeachment.
Let Chris whine all he wants about Tim.
The good thing about Tim is that he means what he says. He is a straight shooter when it comes to thwe issues that affect our lives in some manner or another. Unlike some Congress Reps in Minnesota who have yet to hold meetings with the public, answer for their votes, ask for the inpoput of constituents, etc., Tim is aware that the needs and voices of the people come first. He has the job description down pat and is following through.
Nitro said it best. The roadblocks to real bi-partisanship in Congress lie with the Republican Party. just the other night when Tim was in Rochester, he was relaying some of the votes and how the Republicans were against them, aprticularly the EFCA.
Republican obstructionism. They are more interested in trying everything possible to make sure the Democratic party doesn’t succeed then solving problems for the American people. Real Reaganism. It’s not about effective leadership it’s about permanant single party control. Walz is a rising star in the party and his integrity and honesty could become a model. Bachmann’s seat will be a huge target in ‘08. Compare her and Walz and in that microcosm, you see the differance between the two parties.
kathy,
Notwithstanding the fact that Nitro hasn’t figured out that bills need to pass in both bodies and be reconciled before going to the President, what has Congress accomplished since taking over? What has Walz accomplished since taking office? Having public meetings is one thing, it’s another to be effective. All I see is a lot of bloviating and no action.
If the GOP could just accept it’s time is over. They’ve had their run and now they’re done. If they would accept the verdict of the ‘06 election and start working with Pelosi, more bills would pass. They can’t do that though because they’re holding on to the last vestiges of a failed philosophy. All they have to do is to make sure the Democratic initiatives make no progress and they might be able to lie themselves back into the good graces of the American people again. The GOP is an idealogically bankrupt party and we are witnessing it’s death throes.
Chris,
“All I see is a lot of bloviating and no action.”
Of course that’s all you see. That sums up the problem with you and you ilk.
Chris,
Let me elaborate. The whole problem with the Republicans is that they rely way way too much on strategizing to win elections, and leave the will and best interests of the American people behind. Every post I’ve seen of yours points to that glaringly obvious fact. Smears, half truthes, lies, destroying peoples lives, all are done by you and your ilk with no second thoughts. All that matters is winning.
THAT, my friend, is why your Party has been dying. There’s no rational thought, no new ideas, no interest even in what the people want, thus the obstructionism. Didn’t republicans accuse democrats of that over the last 6 years again and again? And now they do that. All that matters to Republicans is keeping their empty, emotional rhetoric repeating Republican party in power.
You will lose, because your party has lost your emotional grip on our nations psyche for those very obvious reasons. We all get it. Sure, it plays well to your (15% of America) base, but it won’t work on people who are looking for solutions, not smears. Even my right wing Evangelical Christian co-worker has had enough, he’s not going to vote. That says quite a bit.
All I see you do here is smear, and as long as you continue to do that, I will not back down.
Consider this a “permanent commitment”, vs. your “permanent ignore”….. I find it all very fun because it is starting to make up for a rightie shooting my van last year, among other things. Lucky you, Chris.
Please don’t hunt me down and shoot my van because my opinion is different than yours. Thank you.
Here’s a pic of the Republican bullet hole in my van. I do have a family, you know, and this is our precious, safe, mint, paid for van. I properly labeled it, I think.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/jhuth/bulletupgrade.jpg
Nitro!!
You shoot from the hip and take no prisoners. You spell things out better than I ever could. The GOP needs to get with the program and pass the Bills their contituents want passed.
Being visible and acessible to constituents is vital in a Congressional District that is large and diverse as the 1st is. That is an area where Gil Gutknecht failed. I have seen and heard more from Tim Walz in 6 months than I had with Gil in 12 years. That speaks volumes!!!
Funny thing Tim shared about one of the parades he was in. A heckler cornered him for a few moments. Said tht he didn’t agree with any of the votes Tim casted. With Tim’s rapid style asked him what votes were not agreed with …Veterans Benifits? No gifts from Lobbysists? Minimum Wage Increase? More funding fopr police? Cheaper Medications for Seniors? Etc.?? Tim had the guy foaming at the mouth to come up with a vote the guy did not agree with.
It just goes to show that Tim is not stupid nor can he be intimidated by those voters not astute on the issues and by the more senior Repbulican members of the US House. He said once that he was actually heckled by several Repiblican members of the House when it was his turn to talk on the House floor supporting the Hate Crimes Bill and his visit with Matthew Sheppard’s mother.
What attribuites Tim Walz has brought back to the 1st District are Honesty, Integrity, and Accountability. People will pick up on that and tell their friends about Tim. Let those running against Tim dump a ton of money in trying to defeat him.
kathy,
You’re smarter than that, I think anyway. If you read Congressional Quarterly, Roll Call, or other D.C. based publications you know that the House Democrats and the Senate Democrats can’t agree on a lot of issues. The Republicans have zero power in Congress and aren’t filibustering any bills.
The question you should ask is why is Congress’ approval rating ten points lower than President Bush?
I’m going to challenge one other thing you’ve said. You claim that Walz has brought back honesty, integrity and accountability. Name one example where Gil Gutknecht lacked honesty, integrity and accountabilty. It’s one thing to be for the guy you got elected. It’s something entirely different to trash someone who you’ve disagreed with. And this is coming from someone who agrees with you that Gil should have spent more time talking to constituents than he did. But that doesn’t mean he lacked honesty or integrity.
P.S. kathy,
If you think a Republican shot out Nitro’s van, I’ve lost respect for you. Nitro again presents no evidence for his claims. He probably lives in South Minneapolis or somewhere where the van got in the crossfire of a crime. It’s really pathetic that Nitro would just blame Republicans for his misfortune. But that is par for the course.
“If you think a Republican shot out Nitro’s van, I’ve lost respect for you. Nitro again presents no evidence for his claims.”
There is a police report and plenty of discussion about the incident with the right wing guy who didn’t like my bumper stickers on my blog and other blogs the day it happened, pally. What do I need to pull all the paperwork from the police report and sscann it for your lying ass? I live nowhere near South Minneapolis.
What the hell is your problem?
Nitro, Chris,
Zealots on both sides do insane things because it has become impossible for them to reconcile reality with their warped thought processes. I have twice been assaulted (not shot at though) by left wing protest groups in Uptown. Both times I was doing nothing but cross through the groups to get home, or in the first case get some Thai food. Once I was shoved into the street with cars coming and the other time my car was dented multiple times while I was in it.
If we want to have a discussion with the aim of making progress we cannot hold reasonable people responsible for the zealots. John Kline didn’t shoot Nitro’s van any more than Barack Obama pushed me into traffic.
Well put, Kerosene Hat, however, just realize that the incident with my has made me even more determined to fight for what I think is right for Minnesota.
This individual was witnessed by me and my wife shooting my van down our driveway and taking off after a heated argument with him about my bumper stickers. What if my kids were in the van, or the dogs? It’s a little extreme, and although it was the only shooting, it was not a lone incident with some angry right wing guy. I have a pretty good size laundry list of incidents with angry right wingers who hate me because my opinion is different than theirs.
Of course, Hat, as Chris said, we offer no proof, and why should anyone believe us.
I’ve seen many many posts threatening violence against Liberals in the right wing blogosphere, even here in Minnesota, and frequently at MDE recently concerning the protests and the Republican convention. How did America get so divided and who is to blame for that?
My humble opinion is that it is our elected representatives who refuse to stand up and do the right thing. Both parties are more worried about winning elections and work to polarize the public, “energize the base” is the nice term for it. That base of supporters gives the parties the ability to do just about anything and still have a shot at getting elected. This is true because the core supporters would never vote for anybody but the anointed candidate. Walz can vote to fund the war over and over and still be assured every Democrat in his district will vote for him. As people feel more attached to a party than their beliefs on policy they become irrational in order to reconcile their support of a party full of hypocrisies and inconsistencies. It becomes about winning rather than being right or honest. Once that happens people are capable of just about anything.
Treat people as individuals with their own minds and expect the same in return.
Well I wish this elections were about ideas rather than smears. Certainly, over the last 6 years, comparing Democrats to terrorists has been a very popular winning strategy.
Nitro,
I’m taking you off permanent ignore to see if I can work with you one last time. First, your picture didn’t show any of the other bumper stickers. Second, if you talked to the guy the way you have talked to me on this blog, I can understand how you escalated him and he escalated you and how it could continue until something like that could happen. You called the “right wing” guy angry, Nitro - but look at the things you’ve said to me when I’ve merely challenged the things you’ve said not only with ideas but with actual newspaper articles to back them up. I’m not saying that the guy was right to shoot at your van. I’m just saying I can see how things can escalate as angry and vitriolic as you can get.
Also, I too have been assaulted. In Rochester, we had a small group of people protesting across the street and a block away from a home where John Kerry was going to speak. Two guys with AFL-CIO shirts came over and tried roughing some of us up. They even elbowed a 70 something year old man in the ribs. The guy was like five nine and 150 pounds - no He Man compared to the union guys who were over 6 feet tall and 250 pounds. The incident, thankfully, was witnessed by the Rochester police and the union guys were handled accordingly.
Here’s a pic of my van with stickers for your sorry ass. By the way any escalation of words does not justify shooting my van. LOLS “actual newspaper articles to back them up”…and I dont? Cripes pay attention to the blogosphere pally, plenty of information there that you decide to ignore. I’d love a list of what I’ve said to you that you consider over the line. Let’s see it!
How do I know you’re not just making up bullshit, that’s what Republicans do as a strategy to win elections, you’ve spread lies and half truths here over and over and over and over.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/jhuth/ourvanedit.jpg
Nitro,
I can see why your van got shot out, pally. Man you are the most vitriolic and unreasonable person I’ve ever encountered. No, you don’t back up your statements with actual news. And I’m sorry, pally, but the crap that you echo from the blogosphere doesn’t count. You’re back to permanent ignore. Buh Bye.
“I can see why your van got shot out, pally.” You justify terrorism, how ironic.
Wow, that’s just what I expect from someone like yourself. I think the term “unreasonable” and “vitriolic” apply to you also.
Oh poor poor me back on permanent ignore, like that even matters. Guess I won’t hear the talking points I’ve heard over and over and over again from you directed at me anymore. *sobbing* Such a loss.
Get lost, terrorist.
Come on Chris!! Days before the election, Gil’s office was egged. The way it was written up, it was to blame some errant DFLers for the egging that the FBI was called in to investigate.
Nitro’s experience does not affect me personally.
Gil lacked the integrity to stand up to the President on many of his votes. He voted lock step with the Gingrich crowd 95% of the time. He lacked the balls to hold meetings with Seniors throughout the 1st to seek the the best way to get Drug costs down. Instead he comes up with the “Go To Canada to get your drugs. The Bill we pased does not allow Medicare to get you lower prices.”
Nor was Gil as steadfast on the DM7E issue as he could have been. That issue killed him. AS did Iraq. Going to Iraq and spending 16 hours changed him?? “It was as bad as I was lead to believe.” meaning that Bush had Gil convinced that Iraq was a cakewalk and therefore his votes support the constant funding.
Gil is a likeable guy, no question about that. But he lacked the strong leadership qualities that gets the job done. He is more the follower than he is the Point Man. After all the years in the majority party, why wasn’t Gil given better appointments???
When Tim confronted Gil about a certain vote ragarding Iraq in a debate, Gil’s response was, “That decision was made at a pay grade higher than mine.” Which meant, he could not take a stand adn voice an opinion against it. It takes Integrity to stand up, take a position on something, then follow through.
And I know what you are going to say to me, Chris…”Why dod Walz vote to support funding for the Iraq war despite opposing it?” He voted for the Troops more than supporting the President. It was not an easy vote to make, but he did what he felt was right at the time. No reason to rehash over it. It took Integrity to let the voters in the 1st know about that vote despite any potential political backlash it may have caused. So far, voters have supported him as crowds get bigger wherever he is at. Tim has been transparent and honest about the work he is doing. And for that, he is the stronger leader than Gil could have been.
And P.S.Chris…..
In the summer of 2005 at our County Fair, I had a one on one with Gil at the GOP booth. People were around. I said to him…”Gil, you have sold your soul to the Wahington Whore!” He looked at me bewildered. I have known Gil off and on for over 20 years. Our children attended the same Private schools from Elementary through High School.
I continued to say…”You have forgotten who you work for. YOU do not work for GW Bush, the Committees you are on, or the Republican Party! You work for me and everyone else in this District! You answer to me and the people in the 1st!!! And we have the power to change your job description with the flick of a pen.” He looked shook up after I was finished with him. The people around him were a bit puzzled. It was as if I had punched Gil hard in the Solar Plexius and knocked out his wind. His face turned a bit white too.
The rest they say, is history.
kathy,
Well the same criticisms you have about Gil, I have about Tim Walz. Walz brags that he has a 100% voting record with Nancy Pelosi and her crowd. You might think we live in an ultraliberal district, but I don’t. As for Gil and Iraq, I think Gil’s wavering on that issue hurt him in the end. You’re also right that DM&E hurt Gil too. In that case, Gil was trying to be an honest broker. You know, most communities in the First District (except for Rochester and Mankato) actually support the DM&E. It will be interesting to see what happens to Walz when the trains go through anyway, as they most certainly will when the DM&E get private financing.
Matt, Sean & Zack,
You banned that idoit Veritas or whatever his name was for posting blatantly offensive comments. I defended your right to do that and agreed with your decision. This Nitro guy just called me a terrorist among other things. I think it’s time to ban him too. He’s clearly not engaging in constructive debate and calling people terrorists is outside the bounds of decency, don’t you think?
LOLS “This Nitro guy”. We all know how many Democrats have been accused of being terrorists.
What am I spoiling your little, petty, trollie fun?
Good luck with that argument, pally.
What were those, to directly quote you, “other things”?
Just asking?
Terrorists, communists, wishing defeat for the troops, America haters. We’ve been called all of the above and more but I’m thinking it’s time to return the favor. Liars and thieves springs to mind.
Richard.
I find those things to be so over the top offensive, and that’s what the right wing doesn’t understand.
We are you friends, your neighbors, your friends….we’re all AMERICANS.
Some people forgot that.
Richard,
I’m a little bit shocked that you would say what you said considering you’ve called almost everyone who has disagreed with you a fascist. People who question motives (versus questioning judgement) shouldn’t complain when the finger is pointed right back. I’m reminded of someone on this very board who called me a terrorist who now says that everyone is his friends, neighbors and we’re all Americans.
Look, these are emotional issues. But the more we all can stick to facts and ideas and the less we call names, the better politics and the system will be. That’s my two cents.
http://www.oldamericancentury.org/14pts.htm
This is a very interesting read. Give it a try.
Richard,
I did read that rubbish. The sad thing is that nearly all points of fascism can be likened to al Qaeda and the terrorist governments in the Middle East (like Iran, e.g.) only your hatred of Bush makes you too blind to see that.
Chris, I don’t hate Bush. I would be more then happy to sit on his porch and spend a weekend snorting coke and drinking Jim Beam with him. And yes, those are characteristics of many repressive and dictictorial governments. Not Al Qaeda though because Al Qaeda is not a government. Iran is more of a theocracy, certainly repressive but you can’t catagorize it as fascist. Our government has many of those characteristics. Your fascile synchophilism blinds you to that. Take that rubbish and dispute it point by point. I’ll need links and evidence. Just to stay on point with the thread. Walz is awesome. The 1st couldn’t have done better.
Richard,
You’re slipping into Nitro territory. You are a hater and there is really no reasoning with you.
P.S. Richard,
Since you’re posting bullshit from the internet, I’d like to know whether you agree with this:
http://www.oldamericancentury.org/let_it_happen.htm
which accuses the Bush administration of letting 9/11 happen. You’re sick, man, just sick.
So am I to assume you can’t dispute those 14 points? I was certain you wouldn’t be able to.
So your going to dispute the let_it_happen folks. Good, let’s see it and be sure to include links and evidence. Otherwise, your just flapping your lips.
Richard,
I wouldn’t even dip my little toe in the waters you swim in. If you believe that crap, you’re crazy and there’s no use even trying to reason with you.
Chris.
You’re crazy and there’s no use even trying to reason with you. Period.
This recent bit of news from regarding Tim Walz’s latest vote http://www.bluestemprairie.com/
“Today, Rep. Tim Walz voted for H.R. 2669, the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, which would provide the federal government’s single largest investment in higher education in more than 60 years. The legislation passed the House 273-149.
The legislation would drastically increase federal dollars available for college financial aid, adding about $18 billion over the next five years.
The legislation would help millions of students and families pay for college, but does so at no new cost to U.S. taxpayers. The bill pays for itself by cutting $19 billion in unnecessary federal subsidies for private lenders. The bill would also provide nearly $1 billion in deficit reduction to the federal budget.
The College Cost Reduction Act also cuts interest rates on federal student loans from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent throughout the next five years, saving the average borrower $4,400 over the life of their loans. About 67,468 Minnesota students use federal student loans to help finance their education each year
Third District Republican Jim Ramstad joined Minnesota’s Democratic Representatives in voting for H.R. 2669, while Representatives Kline and Bachmann voted against it.”
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Interesting!! Reps. John Kline and Michelle Bachmann do not believe College should be affordable to Minnesota students who do not have rich parents, let alone pay less interest on those loans? Who are Kline and Bachmann really looking out for? SURELY NOT MINNESOTA COLLEGE STUDENTS who live in their Districts!!!
Good vote Tim!!!
Maybe he can get more money for funeral costs for the kids killed in Iraq since he voted to keep funding the war.
“the good news is that Tim Walz isn’t going to be tarred with that brush.”
-You would be just a tad bit on the ingnorant side if you truly believed that.
