Was weather a factor in the long term condition of the bridge? Yes. Can short periods of hot weather cause failures in engineered structures even though those structures have survived that level of temperature before? Yes.

The truth is there will be multiple causes found that combined to cause the bridge to collapse. A weak design is more susceptible to the wear caused by cyclical stresses, corrosion or anything else. Does that mean the design was the cause? Was it the subsequent corrosion? In the end all the factors were part of the cause and anybody that claims there was only one simple cause is a fool.

Hortman never mentioned global warming so people that make that claim are either lying or making an assumption simply because they didn't like her before hand. Her statement was a little naive and overly simplistic but didn't do any damage nor was it completely wrong. I don't like Hortman's stance on policy but she didn't do anything wrong here.

SeanH,

The fools are the ones who don't know anything about bridges, haven't been down to the scene to check it out and are wildly speculating.

Did you read the New York Times yesterday where experts are saying that the leading theory for why the bridge collapsed was a design defect?

It appears that Melissa Hortmann is the fool. The New York Times is reporting a design defect being the leading theory in the bridge collapse.

"...The fatigue on the metal most likely gets worse with age and the continued expansion/contraction caused by the wide temperature swings in this part of the country year after year are likely to have contributed to weakening."

"As much as our dear Republican leaders consider themselves above the laws of man, I'm afraid that the laws of physics aren't as easily avoided."

Bwahahaha! Where did you get your BSME MkNOb..MIT? Matchbook Institute of Technology..

Which physical laws are you referring to?

Can you share the results of your exhaustive investigation?

What model did you use to calculate your bending moments and shear forces?

Did you use finite element analysis or did you opt for the boundry method?

Or is it you've just emptied another bottle of gin to wash down your happy pills? C'mon now..tell us the truth.

Bwahaha!

wtm, in 1988 the bridge was 21 years old. In 2007, it's 40 years old. The fatigue on the metal most likely gets worse with age and the continued expansion/contraction caused by the wide temperature swings in this part of the country year after year are likely to have contributed to weakening.

As much as our dear Republican leaders consider themselves above the laws of man, I'm afraid that the laws of physics aren't as easily avoided.

Again a series of right wing trolls who ignore the points of the left, exaggerate the points of the right, and continue to poison the well here at MN Publius. To think that there are people like this is the great State of Minnesota is a huge embarassment. Just what are these assholes trying to accomplish here? Unfortunately for the rightie trolls, the fruits of their actions here are motivating Democrats to absolutely make sure that their voices continue to have less and less political power by getting out the vote in 2008. I dislike every one of you scumbags more and more every time you post your filth here. You bet I'm getting out the vote, and at National Night Out the other day, discussing politics, I don't think there was a single person there who isn't going to get out there and vote against you righties. You're all full of shit, and we all know it, and we all are sick and tired of it all.

The truth is Hortman never mentions global warming. Anybody that claims she did is lying. People can assume she was thinking global warming but that assumption is based primarily on the desire to fabricate a story and commit fraud.

If you think that weather can have no immediate or long term effect on a structure you have no idea what you are talking about. We might have had years or weeks with much hotter temperatures and nothing happened but other variables are different now. The bridge had rust on it before and nothing happened so rust can't be the problem right?

Hortman's statement was a little naive and simplistic but not false or completely out of line. The post on MDE was simple ridiculous and fraudulent.
