Not To Be Outdone Ciresi Smacks Coleman Around Too

normtimandgeorge.jpgAfter seeing Franken’s smack down of Coleman’s boobery; Mike Ciresi responded by throwing down the gauntlet over Norm Coleman’s self-serving spineless support of a plan to get out of Iraq– later.

“This is the most self-serving proposal that one could imagine. Mr. Coleman wants to continue to risk the lives and well-being of American troops because of his mistaken policy on Iraq.

We need a bipartisan policy to end the war in Iraq that is in the best interest of our nation, rather than the political self-interest of Coleman, prompted by his re-election campaign - our troops, the families of our troops and all Americans deserve nothing less. Since when have we put our troops in harm’s way to appease a politician’s self-interest? Minnesotans should be outraged at such a proposal.

Once again I call upon Norm Coleman to set forth a plan that is in the best interest of America and not his own political agenda.”

(emphasis all mine)

Norm Coleman needs to challenge the President on Iraq now. I understand that would take a spine, something that Coleman is distinctly lacking, but his illogical, self-serving support of Voinovich’s plan is laughable.

Follow the absurdity with me if you will. This plan that Coleman supports calls for an end to combat, but only after George Bush is out of office. It’s not contingent on the situation on the ground then, it’s not contingent on the situation on the ground now, it’s just a sham; and Norm Coleman should be ashamed for being a big enough coward to support this plan rather than pony up and call for change now and he should be ashamed for being a big enough nimrod to think the people of Minnesota would swallow this illogical, self-serving stupid plan.

And big ups to Mike Ciresi for calling out Nahm on his boobery.

Weekend Odds and Ends

3rd CD

State Senator Terri Bonoff scored an impressive pickup in securing Vance Opperman’s support for her run in the 3rd.  Opperman is arguably the preeminent rainmaker in Minnesota DFL politics and this is a major coup.  After hearing Opperman make specific mention of Sen. Bonoff at a DFL event this evening, I asked him if he was supporting her and he said that he was.

2nd CD

Several years ago, a stocky history teacher/National Guard NCO came up to me at an event, handed me a small stone with a “Walz Rocks!” sticker on it, and told me about his run for the First Congressional District seat.  I smiled and chuckled wishing him good luck, while the thought bubble said “He seems too nice to be the sacrificial lamb, oh well.”  I learned my lesson then, and I will not be giving Steve Sarvi such short shrift.  Just back from Iraq he’s in the race against John Kline and if he works as hard as Tim Walz did he will knock Kline back on his heels and give him a real challenge.  Sarvi is having his first fundraiser and event next weekend and we’ll keep you updated as he takes Kline.

And There Was Much Rejoicing

el-tinklenberg-tm.jpgEl Tinklenberg, the former Mayor of Blaine and Commissioner of Transportation, has decided to run for Congress.  MN Publius’ feelings about El are well established:

We love him.

El is announcing his candidacy Monday in Stillwater, Anoka and St. Cloud.

If you don’t know much about El, you can read this interview we did with him in 2006.

Friday Musings

A couple of thoughts on the Third District Race:

1) Why No Announcements?

Over the last few days, the Minnesota blogs have been awash in potential candidates announcing that they are not running, but we have seen very few (two) candidates throw their hats in the ring. Each side has a handful of candidates still weighing their options and even the two candidates who are basically in the race (Bonoff and Paulsen) have not made official statements to the press yet. So why is everyone so trigger shy? One possibility has to do with the FEC.

Jim Ramstad announced his retirement just two weeks before the end of the 3rd Quarter. By the time candidates had a chance to weigh their options and talk to supporters, we were 10 days out from the end of the quarter. 10 days is not enough time for most candidates to build a respectable warchest, so several are probably waiting until the start of October (and the 4th Quarter) to enter the race. I mean you don’t want to look like Dick Day or Randy Demmer.

This is not to say that Bonoff or Paulsen won’t file with the FEC for the 3rd Quarter - anything is possible and if either one managed to raise north of 100k in just over 10 days, that would be quite the statement of strength.

My guess is that we’ll see a lot otf people make up their minds early next week.

UPDATE - MDE reports that Erik Paulsen will “form a federal campaign committee next week.” Monday is the start of the 4th Quarter.

UPDATE 2 - Rachel Stassen-Berger of the Pioneer Press reports that:

Meanwhile, state Sen. Terri Bonoff, a Democrat, has set up a Web site for her bid for the Ramstad seat. The site is mighty thin on details but does allow visitors to contribute to her campaign.

Bonoff said she is running and has already raised “significantly more” than $10,000 for her bid. Once candidates raise $10,000 they must file papers with the Federal Election Commission. She said she’s filed those papers.

So we’ll have at least one FEC Report to look forward to in the 3rd District.

2) Redistricting

One thing that isn’t being talked about much is the effect the Ramstad retirement will have on redistricting. Minnesota is dangerously close to losing a House seat during the next census. Oberstar and Peterson will remain chairmen of their respective committees through 2012 (absent a GOP takeover of the House) making retirement unlikely for either. Kline, Bachmann, Ellison, McCollum and Walz are all too early in their careers for retirement to be a real possibility (though I know some people who would like to see Walz run for Governor in 2010).

In any case, whoever wins the 3rd is likely to be the low man on the totem pole come redistricting - a dangerous place to be when a state is losing a House seat. I’m not saying that anyone is going to decide against running for Congress because of this, but it is interesting to think about.

Ellison Launches Spiffy new Campaign Site

Keith is launching his new campaign site today and the thing looks pretty dang nice. Sure, it’s not really hard news but, hey, a new website is something worth looking at. And, hey, while your there why not put in a donation? Just a suggestion…

Al Franken Rebuts (read: Owns) Coleman in Op-Ed

Al Franken wrote an op-ed in yesterday’s Star Tribune that, in my humble opinion, absolutely eviscerated Senator Coleman and his ad attacking Franken. More than that, however, Franken captured exactly how I feel about this whole MoveOn nonsense and returned the attention to what’s actually important: this disastrous war and how we’re going to get out. Franken’s dead-on here and I know this will resonate with more Minnesotans than a ridiculous ad about a ridiculous ad. I tried for a while to just pick some excerpts to post, but the whole thing is so damn good I gave up. So, here’s the whole thing [emphasis mine]:

I’m a satirist by trade. And as a satirist, my job was to point out the absurd, the hypocritical, the ridiculous in life.

It’s been a banner week for ridiculous.

Case in point: On Tuesday, Sen. Norm Coleman took out an ad in this paper criticizing me for criticizing a Senate resolution that criticized MoveOn.org for taking out an ad in the New York Times criticizing Gen. David Petraeus.

It is, of course, ridiculous that the United States Senate spent a day debating and voting on a resolution condemning an advertisement while our troops remained in Iraq, fighting a war with no end. And it’s doubly ridiculous that Coleman, of all people, is still playing politics with this issue.

After all, he voted last week against a resolution that condemned personal attacks on anyone who had served our nation honorably. That would include Democrats like Max Cleland, John Kerry and John Murtha — proud American veterans who were the targets of political attacks not just on their character, but on their patriotism. In 2004, when Murtha (a Silver Star winner) called for better armor for our troops, Coleman himself accused him of “emboldening the enemy” and “undermining the morale of our troops.”

And as his reelection campaign gets underway, it’s worth noting that Coleman has hired the same media consultant who ran ads in Georgia that juxtaposed pictures of Cleland, who lost two legs and an arm in Vietnam, with Osama bin Laden.

I guess now it’s my turn to be attacked. I’ve been to Iraq four times to visit our troops; I know the incredible sacrifice our men and women in uniform make every day in service to our nation. But Norm Coleman is who he is — so he’s accusing me of “undermining our troops.”

Frankly, I’m used to this kind of smear — it’s what happens when you speak truth to power in George W. Bush’s America. But I think Minnesotans have had enough of this kind of political gamesmanship. As I go around the state, I don’t hear a whole lot about ads in the New York Times. What I do hear is that Minnesotans want this war to end, and that if this president won’t end it, they want the Senate to force him to end it.

There are more than 160,000 troops currently serving in Iraq. We should honor their service by providing them with the best possible medical care when they return. We should honor their sacrifice by refusing to allow this president to keep them there in the middle of a civil war. And we should honor them by taking seriously the difficult debate about the best way, or at least the least bad way, to end our engagement in Iraq.

Bush and his allies in Washington have blocked increases to veterans’ benefits, refused to be held accountable for the mistakes that ruined our military’s efforts in Iraq, and dodged every effort to bring our troops home. Instead of solutions, Norm Coleman offers political games and pointless attacks.

As a satirist, I find the whole thing ridiculous. But as a Minnesotan who wants to bring the troops home, I also find it sad.

St. Sen. Geoff Michel out of CD 3 Race

MDE is reporting that Geoff Michel is out of the race in the 3rd Congressional District. Michel was the most “moderate” Republican in the field - his departure all but assures that the Republican nominee will be a conservative not in the mold of Jim Ramstad.

Coleman Ad Backfiring

Coleman-TeethThe Star Tribune has gone to extreme lengths in its letters to the editor page to follow the misguided rule that balanced=fair. That is, on high-letter-volume topics the paper almost always attempts to include letters from each side of the argument no matter the merits or quality of each response. I don’t particularly fault the Strib for this practice because it’s an unfortunate national trend and likely saves them a lot of strife.

I note this only because it should really catch your eye when a stream of letters comes in that are all from one side. When this happens you know that either the one side vastly outnumbers the other or the missing side’s letters are of a very low quality, or a combination thereof.

So, it caught my eye today when every single letter about the Coleman ad was negative. And there were no less than five such letters listed. And this response comes even after the Strib not only published the advertisement, but then published an article about the ad (!) even though they did not afford Franken the same treatment when he purchased a full-page ad. Apparently trying to get people riled up about a vote that even a fourth grader would recognize as meaningless political maneuvering isn’t working too well, who’d a thunk. I do have to say though, I always enjoy watching Senator Coleman use his money to create bad will for himself.

The full of the letters are below the break, but here are some excepts:

“I would like to personally thank Sen. Norm Coleman for pointing out in his full-page ad on Tuesday that exercising freedom of speech is a ridiculous idea.” –Joel Jackson

“Coleman would spend his time and his money better by listening to his constituents and voting against the continuation of this disastrous war.” –Jane Simon

“I don’t recall Sen. Norm Coleman running full-page newspaper advertisements or voting for a bill when the Swift Boat veterans smeared Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry” –Mark Weber

Erik Paulsen the Frontrunner

I have not been a regular reader of the blog formerly known as Kennedy v the Machine since the election last fall.  But I stopped by today and noticed that they have some great insight into the Republican field in CD 3.

Last week, MN Publius called former House Majority Leader Erik Paulsen the Republican frontrunner in the 3rd.  Looks like that description was accurate:

TvM spoke with folks close to likely congressional candidate Erik Paulsen last evening and learned that the 7-term Eden Prairie conservative is quietly assembling a potent fundraising team.

Both Senator Boschwitz and fmr. GOP chair Ron Eibensteiner have signed on to spearhead Paulsen’s nascent bid.  The state representative is said to be putting together an impressive “kitchen cabinet”.

So Paulsen is the frontrunner, but all is not well in Republican world:

At the same time, TvM is running into more and more nervous Republicans who are wondering whether the former Majority Leader has the profile and skills to win in a toss-up district with the wind potentially at the DFL’s back.

We agree with the nervous Republicans.

Meanwhile, another oft-meantioned Republican potential, St. Sen. Geoff Michel,  is not doing so hot according to TvM:

Despite his name being repeatedly mentioned as a likely GOP candidate and stating that he’s weighing his options, St. Sen. Geoff Michel is doing nothing to indicate that he’s legitimately exploring a run.  Michel has not been merely outpaced by quasi-frontrunner St. Rep. Erik Paulsen but seems to be at the starting gate mulling whether or not to tie his shoes.  He’s not running.

Harsh.

As a sidenote, former Mark Kennedy Campaign Manager Pat Shortridge has signed on as a contributor over at TvM.  This ought to be fun.

Norm’s Not Looking So Good

colemanprofile2-tm.jpgSurvey USA just released new approval ratings for Minnesota’s Senators and Norm Coleman isn’t looking so hot. Only 46% of Minnesotans approve of his job performance, compared to 45% who disapprove. I don’t mean to be a broken record here, but any incumbent below 50% is in danger. More troubling for Norm is the fact that his approval among moderates is down to 41%, not good at all.

But don’t worry Norm, I have a foolproof plan to revitalize your polling numbers:

Be Amy Klobuchar.

Amy’s polling at her usual amazing levels - a phenomenal 62% approval with only 32% dissapproving. Looks like Minnesotans are happy with the choice they made last fall.

Obama at the Harkin Steak Fry

So, remember that ad for the 30th Annual Harkin Steak Fry that was in the right column of our sidebar for a month? Well, it looks like things went pretty darn well down in Indianola, IA! This is a video from the Obama campaign that was posted on YouTube last week of all the action down at the fry:

3rd CD Report Updated

Cd3-1Our 3rd District Report page (see the tab up above?) has been updated just now with the most current information. Notable changes are Melissa Hortman moving down to the “likely in” category, Luger dropping out, Steve Kelley moving to the “Not likely” category (based on rumors we’ve been hearing) and Brian Sullivan dropping from a 1st tier GOP candidate to “definitely not running.” Also note that the page has comments enabled and there is a strong discussion still raging there.
Take a look.

Interesting Comparison on Ramstad’s Retirement

ramstad-tm.jpgWhile looking to see if the newest DFL press release had been added to the DFL website yet, I saw the press release regarding Representative Jim Ramstad’s retirement on there.

“Representative Jim Ramstad has been an important voice for the Third Congressional District and the entire state of Minnesota in Washington throughout his nine terms in Congress.

“In an era of increasingly divisive politics, Congressman Ramstad has consistently worked across the aisle to get things done for Minnesota. As DFLers, we appreciated his personal friendship with the late Senator Paul Wellstone and Sheila Wellstone. In addition, all Minnesotans can be grateful for Representative Ramstad’s relentless advocacy with regard to alcoholism and addiction issues and his tireless work for mental-health parity. In these fields, he leaves an important legacy.

“The Minnesota DFL Party thanks Representative Ramstad for his hard work and dedication on behalf of Minnesota.”

I decided to see what the Republican Party had to say about Representative Ramstad’s retirement.

“Representative Jim Ramstad has been an extraordinary public servant and a true giant on behalf of all Minnesotans. Beyond his many accomplishments as a public official, Jim is an exemplary human being and a treasured friend. I wish Jim and his family all the best in the years ahead.”

One sounds like they know him and are actually sad to see him go, and the other sounds like a half-assed Hallmark card– I’ll leave the distinction up to you.

DFL Attacks Coleman Stuntery

colemanbush-tm.jpg

The DFL just sent this press release out regarding Norm Colemans $37,000 stunt in the newspaper this morning.

Stunts Can’t Distract from Coleman’s Record on War in Iraq

Unwilling to Abandon Failed President’s War in Iraq ,

Coleman Tries to Distract Minnesotans from Record on the War, as Political Flack for Bush

St. Paul, MN (September 25, 2007) As Senator Norm Coleman pulls political stunts to distract from his record as a staunch supporter of President Bush and the failed war in Iraq, the Minnesota DFL Party said today that Coleman can’t hide from his own record on the issues that matter most to Minnesotans — voting seven times this year alone against changing course in Iraq and serving as a shameless attack dog for President Bush.

“Senator Coleman can’t hide from his own record — not only consistently supporting the war in Iraq, but loyally serving this failed president by doing more than his share of attacking the credibility of brave American veterans,” said Minnesota DFL Chair Brian Melendez.

“Coleman can try to erase his record with empty words and cheap political stunts, but the fact remains that he had seven chances to change course in Iraq this year alone, and he’s voted against every single one of them,” continued Melendez. “At the end of the day, Minnesotans will judge Coleman on the issues that matter most to them, and no amount of distraction can change Coleman’s unwavering support for the president and his failed war in Iraq . Our state deserves far better than the political opportunist that is Norm Coleman.”

Fascinating Article on John Paul Stevens

Stevens, however, is an improbable liberal icon. “I don’t think of myself as a liberal at all,” he told me during a recent interview in his chambers, laughing and shaking his head. “I think as part of my general politics, I’m pretty darn conservative.” Stevens said that his views haven’t changed since 1975, when as a moderate Republican he was appointed by President Gerald Ford to the Supreme Court. Stevens’s judicial hero is Potter Stewart, the Republican centrist, whom Stevens has said he admires more than all of the other justices with whom he has served. He considers himself a “judicial conservative,” he said, and only appears liberal today because he has been surrounded by increasingly conservative colleagues. “Including myself,” he said, “every judge who’s been appointed to the court since Lewis Powell” — nominated by

Richard Nixon in 1971 — “has been more conservative than his or her predecessor. Except maybe Justice Ginsburg. That’s bound to have an effect on the court.”
