Coleman’s Ad Man and Strategist Attacks Veterans

Last week Norm Coleman voted against supporting the honor, integrity and patriotism of our veterans, and if that weren’t disgusting enough, he continues to support and promote Scott Howell — the man behind this disgusting ad comparing Vietnam Veteran, and Bronze and Silver Star recipient Max Cleland to Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

John McCain, another Vietnam veteran had this to say about that ad.

I’ve never seen anything like that ad. Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to a picture of a man who lost three limbs on the battlefield — it’s worse than disgraceful, it’s reprehensible.

Scott Howell is currently advising two candidates. Rudy Giuliani, and Norm Coleman.

Footage from ads done by Howell is on Norm Coleman’s website as we speak.

I have contacted Norm Coleman’s campaign to ask how he squares lip service for our veterans and soldiers while employing someone who has made a fortune attacking the patriotism, honor and integrity of our veterans. I’ll be sure to inform you if he responds.

    Sean:

The ad you referenced didn’t compare former Senator Cleland to Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

Click below to watch the ad:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKFYpd0q9nE

I know it’s one of the left’s favorite talking points to say the ad compared former Senator Cleland to Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden, but the ad didn’t.

Have you seen the ad? I’m looking forward to another correction from you.

  2. 2 2 Michael B. Brodkorb

I’m not defending the ad. But if you’re going to complain about it, at least get your fact straight.

  3. 3 3 Sean

Michael — By showing Max Cleland next to Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein there is only one judgment that can be made that he is somehow comparable to those two.

It was a disgusting ad, and Senator Coleman should be ashamed for hiring someone who would attack a hero, a distinguished veteran so maliciously.

John McCain said the ad was “worse than disgraceful, it’s reprehensible.”

And yes Mike — I did see the ad, I linked to it in the post above.

I look forward to your comments expressing your shock at Norm Coleman for hiring this man who has attacked the courage, honor and patriotism of our veterans. Sean

  4. 4 4 Michael B. Brodkorb

Former Senator Max Cleland’s does not appear next to Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein in the ad.

I think you should watch the ad again.

I’m not defending the ad, but at least be accurate in your attacks about it.

  5. 5 5 Sean

Michael — The ad was so tasteless, so disgusting that John McCain said it was “worse than disgraceful, it’s reprehensible.” And, Norm Coleman HIRED the man who made it to come back and work for him.

Norm Coleman is putting money in the pockets of a man who made a disgraceful and reprehensible ad attacking the honor, integrity and patriotism of a highly decorated veteran.

Is that Norm Coleman’s idea of supporting our veterans?

I hope you enjoy working with Scott Howell on Norm Coleman’s campaign. And I’d appreciate it if instead of ‘not defending’ his ad, you told him what it really was.

    Reprehensible. Sean

  6. 6 6 Sean

And, I’d also like to point out that John McCain, also felt that the ad showed pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden next to pictures of Max Cleland, who in case you forgot lost three limbs in Vietnam.

So, clearly although a Republican Presidential candidate feels that way, it must be a liberal talking point?

This ad is disgusting, and Norm Coleman should be ashamed to have this man as an advisor.

Is this what Norm Coleman considers supporting our veterans? By paying a hack who attack the honor, the integrity and the patriotism of our veterans? Sean

MBB, by nit-picking at the specific ad itself, you willfully ignore the real point: Norm Coleman is a hypocrite.

The ad is indefensible, and the people who created it are reprehensible. They intentionally smeared a veteran who left 3 limbs on the battlefield and still chose to continue serving his country. They smeared the hell out of Max Cleland, a decorated vet for purely partisan political purposes.

And now, one of them works for Norm Coleman. If Al Franken hired someone like this, MDE would be calling for his head. Instead, you show up here acting like the real problem is liberals exaggerating.

Norm Coleman is proving once again that there is nothing he won’t do to win an election. including associating with the worst elements in politics.

  8. 8 8 Randy

Sorry, Mr. Brodkorb, but your “it’s not as bad as you make it out to be” argument is defending the ad, three successive denials notwithstanding.

I would say they are worse than the infamous “General Betray Us” ad.

  9. 9 9 Randy

I meant the anti-Cleland ads are worse, not the denials.

Pronouns are the devil, aren’t they?

  10. 10 10 Demrock6

Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t this also the guy who the Mark Kennedy for Congress campaign used in 2004 showing Saddam with Patty Wetterling? What about the white girl gushing “I met Harold at the playboy party” about Black senate candidate Harold Ford in Tennessee?

Scott Howell is a scorched Earth ad man. I am glad Norm Coleman is showing his true colors once again.

  11. 11 11 Sean

There is a lot more on Scott Howell — Norm Coleman should be ashamed for himself for hiring such a negative and hateful person as his advertising consultant. Sean

  12. 12 12 Michael B. Brodkorb

    Sean:

Please post the image from the ad of former Senator Cleland next to Bin Laden and Hussein.

If it’s true that Cleland’s image appears next to Bin Laden and Hussein in the ad, it shouldn’t be any trouble for you.

    That’s what I thought - you can’t do it.

  13. 13 13 Zack

Michael, your nitpicking is not a defense, it just makes you look desperate. John McCain denounced the ad. Its a dispicable ad. You yourself will not defend the ad. You are making a distinction without a difference. Even if what you say is true, its still a dispicable ad.

  14. 14 14 Nitro

    Micheal,

You’re desparately splitting hairs here. You should be embarassed.

  15. 15 15 Sean

Michael — It’s not rocket science. When you view the video it shows pictures of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein and then pictures of Max Cleland, a decorated veteran of Vietnam. This inspired John McCain, noted liberal (ahem) to describe it as

“Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to a picture of a man who lost three limbs on the battlefield— it’s worse than disgraceful, it’s reprehensible.”

I asked a simple question Michael — is this what Norm Coleman considers supporting Americas veterans? By putting thousands of dollars in the coffers of a man who attacked the courage, patriotism and integrity of our veterans?

And I’m still waiting for you to express your shock at your paymaster for hiring such a hateful and negative consultant. Sean

  16. 16 16 Kerosene Hat

    Micheal,

The images appear next to each other in the time sequence not on the screen. Both are correct uses of the term “next to”. If I were to say out loud the words “Bush is” and then say the words “the worst president ever” would you infer a certain message from that?

Either you aren’t very bright or are choosing to be deceptive, take your pick.

  17. 17 17 Michael B. Brodkorb

BTW Sean, the ad does not compare former Senator Cleland to Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

I’m not defending the ad, but at least be accurate in your attacks about it.

  18. 18 18 Nitro

    Micheal,

Clearly, the image of Osama Bin Laden served a purpose, or it wouldn’t be in the ad.

Can you explain to me what Bin Laden’s image was doing there?

What purpose did Bin Laden’s image serve?

  19. 19 19 Anonabat35

I really don’t understand why anyone wastes a single moment debating a sheepish ditto-head like Michael Brodkorb. His job - whether official or otherwise - is to NEVER admit to the hypocrisy of the folks he would like to see in office and the ones he currently supports. The best we can ever get out of him and his ilk are copouts like “I’m not defending the ad, but”….. Clearly, with a statement like that, and so many of his other statements, he has no intention of debating with the goal of getting to the truth. Like all righties in this country, the goal of debating anybody is to simply propagate their extremely limited and entirely factually defunct world view.

Debate for any other reason than getting to the factual truth of the matter is pointless. In some cases, there is no “truth” to be found. This is not one of those cases. MB is clearly full of shit.

  20. 20 20 Randy

To return to the initial point of the post: could hiring Scott Howell be a sign that Senator Coleman’s campaign is starting to panic about the prospects of his re-election? Hiring such a dirty fighter (especially by an incumbent) looks like a sign of desperation.

Of course, it could work to the Democrats’ advantage. Norman Finkelstein didn’t help Rudy Boschwitz much, did he?

  21. 21 21 The Big E

The beauty of a Howell ad is it intimates a connection that is plausibly deniable. Notice how hard Mr. Brodkorb is working to play up the plausible deniability of the actual intent of the ad. Faux News, right-wing talk radio, ad men like Howell and many other right wing turdblossoms use this tactic frequently. To put it in other words, its a nudge-nudge wink-wink strategy. The right knows what they want to say and don’t give a damn about the consequences afterward. They know it is effective and will continue to do this.

Once again … thanks to Sean and MN Publius for pointing this out. With Howell on the case, that just gives us more ammunition to go after Norm and fire up our base.

little mikey, maybe you can help me. I’m trying to remember who said, “if you tell a lie often enough, it eventually becomes accepted as the truth.” Somehow I’m thinking that applies to your posts. You seem to be telling a big lie, often.

  24. 24 24 Swiftee

I’m not the least bit surprised to see that you dolts are confused, and I’m in a particularly generous mood so here’s a clue…gratis:

The ad starts with pictures of OBL and SH. These guys are, or were in the case of SH, dedicated to the destruction of Western civilization; but most especially America. There are also pictures of US military hardware; this is what is standing between guys like OBL, SH and your batcaves.

The next frame shows Max Cleland with a caption that says “Claiming the courage to lead”.

Most third graders outside of the feverswamp (well maybe not public school third graders) could easily understand that the message is that Cleland is not qualified to lead the fight against guys like OBL and SH, because he is a Democrat….not that he is related to them.

You idiots bring that message home with this demonstration of Democrat inability to even distinguish between our nations enemies and one of your own.

Ya can’t fight ‘em if ya can’t see ‘em, kids.

  25. 25 25 Swiftee

Moron.com really dropped a turd in the “reality based” community’s kool-aid barrel, didn’t they?

This thread reeks of Democrat desperation, unless you are all really as stupid as you are working so hard to convince us you are.

Please, by all means get your base “fired up” with this line of reasoning…who knows, maybe they will get “fired up” enough to buy a full page ad in the LA times.

Let me know where to send a check! Heh.

  26. 26 26 Nitro

    Swiftee,

    You’re such a nice guy!

I have never seen such a comment represent the Republican party so very well. It definately matches your picture.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/jhuth/swiftee-1.jpg

“Cleland is not qualified to lead the fight against guys like OBL and SH, because he is a Democrat” is one of those broad brush attempted stereotypes that we who are being stereotyped love so much.

So….how is that war on terror going, since you righties are so good at doing that. Are you doing a heck of a job? The cave dwelling losers who struck us on 9/11, are they gone?

Are we winning? You’ve had 6 years do kill Bin Laden. Why isn’t he dead yet?

I suppose no Democrat could do a better job than you incompetent retards, huh.

  27. 27 27 Swiftee

    Good morning MySpace boy.

smirkingchimp.com: The rosetta stone of the “reality based” community. Pfft.

  31. 31 31 Richard

That doesn’t make any sense Tom. The rosetta stone was a stele that had text written in both Greek and Egytian heiroglyphs and allowed language experts to decipher all ancient texts from Egypt. smirkingchimp.com does nothing of the kind. The metaphor doesn’t hold up. Maybe try calling it a standard for the reality based community or a prime example or a site, indicative of the kind of thing you find at,,,. Try again Tom, you can do this. I know you’re not completely stupid.

  32. 32 32 Swiftee

No dickhead; I am fully aware of what the rosetta stone and what it was used for…I have it just right.

Lefty morons (such as yourself) inevitably rely on quotes from lefty sites like smirkingchimp.com (or truthout & etc.) to try and make sense of the incoherent babble they are foisting upon an incredulous readership.

The correct place to challenge my metaphor might be to point out that sending rational people to smirkingchimp.com cannot and does not help the babblers cause, while the authentic rosetta stone was actually of use.

  33. 33 33 Nitro
