Coleman’s Ad Man and Strategist Attacks Veterans

Last week Norm Coleman voted against supporting the honor, integrity and patriotism of our veterans, and if that weren’t disgusting enough, he continues to support and promote Scott Howell — the man behind this disgusting ad comparing Vietnam Veteran, and Bronze and Silver Star recipient Max Cleland to Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

John McCain, another Vietnam veteran had this to say about that ad.

I’ve never seen anything like that ad. Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to a picture of a man who lost three limbs on the battlefield — it’s worse than disgraceful, it’s reprehensible.

Scott Howell is currently advising two candidates. Rudy Giuliani, and Norm Coleman.

Footage from ads done by Howell is on Norm Coleman’s website as we speak.

I have contacted Norm Coleman’s campaign to ask how he squares lip service for our veterans and soldiers while employing someone who has made a fortune attacking the patriotism, honor and integrity of our veterans. I’ll be sure to inform you if he responds.

Norm Coleman Attacks Al Franken, Then Votes Against Honoring Veterans

colemanbush-tm.jpgMike Michael Brodkorb is shocked (Shocked I tell you!!) about Al Franken’s campaign calling the political stunt perpetrated by the Senate Republicans ‘ridiculous’ and a ‘waste of time’

The exact quote if you will…

“Asked how Franken would have voted, campaign spokesman Andy Barr said that Franken ‘thought the resolution was ridiculous and a waste of the Senate’s valuable time - which could have been better spent voting to bring the troops home.’

Appropriately timed shock is key to Brodkorb’s thing… well… whatever that thing is.

And then hark! Who should be heard in the wilderness but a full page ad from the Coleman campaign attacking Al Franken.

What should make all of us scratch our heads is why exactly after spending thousands of dollars trying to score political points against Al Franken, did Norm Coleman vote against a Senate Resolution supporting our veterans? In a simple sense of the Senate resolution, a bipartisan group of Senators declared,

To reaffirm strong support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and to strongly condemn attacks on the honor, integrity, and patriotism of any individual who is serving or has served honorably in the United States Armed Forces, by any person or organization.

It’s time for Senator Coleman to stop playing politics, and start working on supporting our veterans.

There is going to be more on this, stay tuned.

More Love For Al

Al Franken just released a new batch of endorsements, the full list is below. Regular readers of MN Publius already knew about some of these, but there are quite a few names that are new even to us.

Sen. Keith Langseth (Glyndon)
Sen. Linda Scheid (Brooklyn Park)
Sen. Tom Saxhaug (Grand Rapids)
Sen. Ann Lynch (Rochester)

Rep. Loren Solberg (Grand Rapids)
Rep. Gene Pelowski Jr. (Winona)
Rep. Alice Hausman (Saint Paul)
Rep. Mindy Greiling (Roseville)
Rep. Ann Lenczewski (Bloomington)
Rep. Sheldon Johnson (Saint Paul)
Rep. Lyle Koenen (Clara City)
Rep. Leon Lillie (North Saint Paul)
Rep. Jeanne Poppe (Austin)
Rep. Carolyn Laine (Columbia Heights)
Rep. Sandra Masin (Eagan)

City Councilor Lisa Goodman (Minneapolis)
City Councilor Betsy Hodges (Minneapolis)

DNC Member Nancy Larson

Steelworkers Local 1938 (Virginia)

I hope to offer more analysis on this later, but I want to highlight one of these endorsements as especially significant.

Rep. Ann Lenczewski is Chair of the House Tax Committee and the Dean of suburban Democrats in the Minnesota House. I’ve said before that Al would benefit greatly from an endorsement by a veteran suburban legislator - Ann Lenczewski is exactly that. Rep. Lenczewski knows how to win tough races in the suburbs, if she thinks Al can win, then he probably can.

More (hopefully) later.

Sullivan Out, Stanek Not Out

MDE gives us two pieces of interesting news:

1) Brian Sullivan, the wealthy (and crazy) businessman/RNC Committeeman is out of the CD 3 race. I know a lot of DFLers were salivating over the prospect of running against the just-to-the-right-of-Atilla-the-Hun Sullivan, but I’m glad that his craziness is out of the race. The “root for the craziest GOPer to win the nomination” theory has one major flaw: sometimes they win the general (witness Michele “hugs and kisses” Bachmann). We’re better off with Sullivan no where near the wheels of government.

The big question: Sullivan was the favorite of the “RHINO-hunter” wing of the MN GOP. Now that he is not running, who does this support swing to?

2) Hennepin County Sherriff Rich Stanek is not yet out of the race, though my understanding is that he is not very likely to run.

Breaking: Luger Officially?

luger.gifAndy Luger has been calling activists in the 3rd Congressional District today telling him that he is officially in the race and asking for their support.

He joins State Senator Terri Bonoff as the only other official candidate in the race.

ZACK UPDATES: Eric Black reports that he spoke with Andy Luger this morning and that he said:

“I decided very late last night, I’m not going to run for Congress,” he said.

Yesterday, all indications were that Luger was running. This is a dramatic reversal. One interesting question, does Luger’s withdrawal open the door to a Lillehaug candidacy?

In addition, former U.S. Attorney David Lillehaug, a DFLer, said he would not enter the race if Luger does.

Lillehaug would be a juggernaut.

MATT UPDATES: This was sitting in my inbox this morning but I missed it:

Late last night, Ellen and I decided that this was not the time for me to launch a campaign for Congress.

It was my plan and expectation to campaign essentially full time from here on out. My personal and professional commitments, however, make it very difficult for me to run the kind of campaign I want. As I sat down to map out my campaign plan and strategy for the next few months, I realized that my business travel schedule and my personal demands were inconsistent with a full time Congressional campaign. The race for the DFL endorsement over the next few months will be hotly contested and requires careful planning, concentration and a great deal of time. The delegates and decision makers in the 3rd deserve no less. Any of my good friends who are running, or considering running, will make great candidates. I wish them well.

When I run for office next, I will do so in the manner I know best. While Ellen and I are disappointed that the timing did not work out for us this time, we are grateful to all who pledged their support to my potential run.

Terri Bonoff, Melissa Hortman, Andy Luger, Steve Kelley and Steve Simon were all apparently there. If you were too, share your thoughts in the comment section.

Interesting Timing

Is Tim Pawlenty taking sides? This is from a Friday article in the Eden Prairie News (and lifted entirely from a Paulsen press release).

Governor Tim Pawlenty has invited State Representative Erik Paulsen to join him and a delegation of Minnesota business executives on a trade mission to India in October.

Funny that this announcement should be made just days after Congressman Ramstad’s retirement and with Erik Paulsen considered a leading contender for the Republican nomination.

This could have been planned for awhile now, so it could be nothing. But I wonder what Brian Sullivan and Geoff Michel think of this announcement.

Bonoff is in

MN Publius has learned beyond any doubt that State Senator Terri Bonoff will be a candidate for Congress in the 3rd District. Stay tuned for more details.

The Field is Narrowing

More » is reporting that Buck Humphrey has decided not to run in CD 3. MN Publius previously reported that St. Rep. Maria Ruud and fmr Congressman Bill Luther would not run.

Klobuchar Votes To End The War

It didn’t seem to get a whole lot of play in the mainstream media, but our very own Amy Klobuchar was one of just 28 Senators to vote “yes” yesterday on Reid-Feingold, a measure to put binding deadlines on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

I mention this because some in the liberal blogosphere have been criticizing Amy for her vote on the MoveOn resolution. This kind of stuff drives me crazy. The MoveOn resolution is fluff. It doesn’t mean anything. Its a political trap by the Republicans designed to make Democrats look bad. More to the point - the ad was stupid. It distracted attention away from the important issues surrounding the war and gave Republicans something to crow about, enabling them to avoid defending the war. For that reason alone the ad deserves to be condemned. Amy has, however, a better reason for voting against the ad:

“While Senator Klobuchar strongly disagrees with the direction the Administration is taking in Iraq, she has great respect for our men and women in uniform and their service to our country. As such, she did not feel the MoveOn.org ad was appropriate. Senator Klobuchar continues to believe that its time for a new direction in Iraq, and to begin bringing our troops home.”

People should focus on the stuff that matters. Amy is doing exactly what the people of Minnesota sent her to Washington to do: demand change. Perhaps that’s why her approval ratings have gone up and up.

3rd CD Rankings: The Republicans

In our coverage of the 3rd CD so far, we’ve been devoting all our attention to the DFL primary field and ignoring Minnesota’s minority party. Poor Republicans. Well, this injustice is about to end.

Below are our very first 3rd CD candidate rankings of the 2008 cycle. We plan to put these out regularly for both the DFL and the GOP side. We’re starting with the Republicans because we haven’t even done a run down of their side of the aisle yet and its nice to kill two birds with one stone.

We’ve ranked the candidates individually, but also by tier. Its so early in the race that the tier rankings might be more useful and accurate, but lets face it, individual rankings are more fun. Just bear in mind that the difference between candidates within the same tier is, as one Republican told me, “a matter of inches, not miles.”

Tier One: The Frontrunners

paulsen1. St. Rep Erik Paulsen - Paulsen is the former Majority Leader in the MN House - he lost a leadership election to Marty Seifert after the GOP lost control in 2006. More reserved and less charismatic that either Seifert or former Speaker Steve Sviggum, Paulsen is a hard worker. In fact, from what we hear, Paulsen is outworking the GOP field right now. Speed kills in primary campaigns, and Paulsen is moving fast.

sullivan2. RNC Committeeman Brian Sullivan - He’s got money, party connections, conservative credentials and money. Did I mention that he’s rich? Its pretty easy to see why the man who almost derailed Tim Pawlenty’s political career is an early favorite in this race. His wallet makes Republicans drool. His insane issue positions make DFLers drool. Expect Sullivan to have a corner on the “RHINO-hunters” if he runs.

Michel3. State Senator Geoff Michel - Michel was an early favorite (can I really call him that when the race is less than a week old?), but he’s been outworked by Paulsen and doesn’t have Sullivan’s checkbook. Michel has a moderate image (its mostly an image) and might try to claim the ‘electable’ mantle.

The Kissymonster Strikes Again

bachmannIt would appear that George Bush is a bigger threat to the institution of marriage than the homosexuals.

“The President and I enjoy a great relationship. When he was, when he and I were back visiting the collapsed bridge, he reached over because he wanted to give me a kiss when we were down at the site and I had pulled back and he said ‘What’? you know, “you don’t want to embrace?’ and I said, you know, the people of Minnesota love you, Mr. President, but I think one kiss was enough.”

This was Bachmann on the Dave Lee show on WCCO this morning. You can find audio of the whole interview here.

I think Michele Bachmann is claiming that George Bush has a secret plan to win her heart.

The First Cattle Call

The 3rd CD DFL monthly meeting tonight. Given Congressman Ramstad’s recent retirement, the place is lousy with potential DFL candidates. MN Publius has a source at the scene who is reporting back to us as it happens…

**St. Sen. Terri Bonoff has addressed the meeting and reportedly said “My family is living like I am running.” This confirms other reports that we are hearing that Senator Bonoff is leaning towards making the race.

**Andy Luger is traveling and was unable to make it to the meeting, but sent a representative who told the crowd that he is “thinking” about running “seriously considering running.”

**St. Rep. Steve Simon addressed the crowd and sounded very much like a candidate. Very polished. Our source tells us that he has given “the best speech so far”.

**St. Rep. Melissa Hortman was the first prospective candidate at the meeting, arriving 30 minutes early. Rep. Hortman has not yet spoken, apparently she has been busy working the crowd.

**Buck Humphrey “sauntered” in very late. He also has yet to speak.

We’ll update this post with more information as soon as we have it.

UPDATE - I got it wrong. Andy Luger’s representative said that he is “seriously considering running” not “thinking” about it as I reported earlier. Our sincere apologies to Andy Luger and his representative.

[Sean adds: we got a thorough account from our MNPublius source with some more interesting tidbits.]

The one common thread amongst all the legislators was the idea that they had run into roadblocks when trying to deal with a number of issues on the statewide level that were actually national problems. Education, transportation, and global warming were some of the issues I remember being mentioned.

From what I heard (Sean’s note: the source was with us on the phone when Buck spoke), Buck was the only one who didn’t talk about any issues.

With that in mind, I’m pretty happy. Everyone I saw spoke looked like they could be a congressperson already. I also have a pretty good feeling that everyone is going to honor the endorsement (even Buck).

One Kevin Ray Smith who ran against Wendy Wilde in the primary last year showed up as the meeting was closing, which may or may not mean anything. Last year at the CD3 convention he suggested giving everyone in congress a massage to relieve all the tension would be a great way to build bi-partisanship.

RESTORE HABEAS | CALL COLEMAN NOW

The United States Constitution, the supreme law of the land, says in Article I, Section 9, paragraph 2:

“The privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.”

Yet in the single most heinous act in direct offense to our democracy that has occurred in the last decade, Congress voted to gut the core of this, our most basic right. Habeas is the gatekeeper to all our other rights we have as American citizens, without it little else matters. Right to free speech, right to a trial by jury, right to property; these all mean nothing without habeas.

We now have the chance to restore it to the full meaning our founders bestowed it with but 7 Senators currently stand in the way. Senator Norm Coleman stands with other Republicans in their filibuster of this historically important bill.

Call him now, our democracy depends upon it:

Ruud isn’t running

A Democrat close to State Representative Maria Ruud tells MN Publius that the sophomore state representative is not going to run for Congress in the 3rd District. We’re beating down the doors and hopefully we’ll have information on one or two more candidates by the end of the week.
