MDE: Ciresi Has Bi-Partisan Appeal

MDE has a post up showing that Jim Hovland, who was a moderate Republican until this fall, gave money to Mike Ciresi’s campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2000. I thank Michael for showing that Mike Ciresi has the ability to reach out to Republicans and earn their support. Clearly Ciresi would be a strong challenger to Norm Coleman.

UPDATE: Hovland also gave money to George W. Bush in 1999 and Mark Kennedy in 2004.

I hardly think Hovland giving money to Ciresi means he has “cross over appeal.” If anything (and even this is a stretch) it means Ciresi is a moderate politician who is friends with another moderate politician. From my perspective, it is time for Minnesota to send a progressive, not another moderate, to the U.S. Senate. All in all, however, let’s not read too much into mere $300 donation. You are making a mountain out of an ant hill.

Just because Hovland gave to Ciresi before Hovland was publicly a Democrat doesn’t mean Ciresi automatically has bi-partisan appeal. It means that one guy who switched parties gave money to him before he switched.

I agree, probably doesn’t mean shit. However, I think he is right in saying that Cerisi does have the ability to cross the lines a little more. On the other hand, I’m not actually convinced he really has to that much. Most Republicans I talk to, and I talk to a lot, are so pissed that they are already considering either not voting or voting against their party in protest, because all the R’s seem to align themselves with the activist side of the party, i.e. the Bushites.

As with the liberals the party will come together when voting time comes around. Especially once the democrats put up Hillary! That will motivate many to make sure ALL Republican get out and vote. :)
