The quips keep coming after Senator Coleman announced his endorsement of Rudy Guliani. This analysis comes from the National Journal’s Hotline:
Giuliani and Coleman “got to know each other” when Coleman was St. Paul mayor, and Giuliani was NYC mayor — “and they have a lot in common.” Both are Brooklyn natives, both are ex-prosecutors, and both are ex-Dems.
It’s just too perfect that the Brooklyn boys that had mid-life party realignments would come together once again. A selection of comments from the last few days:
Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) plans to endorse the presidential campaign of former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, according to Republican sources.
It’s a union of two Brooklyn-native, non-Protestant former mayors. [Politico]
And
So the Senator who didn’t think Halliburton’s war profiteering was worth investigating is endorsing the candidate who wanted to put Bernie Kerik in charge of Homeland Security. Makes sense to us! [Andy Barr, Franken Comm. Dir., via TPM]

I found Pawlenty’s endorsement of McCain very early and impractical. If there is a cultural and historical connection between the two, so be it. But the candidacy of Guiliani, who does not represent himself as a social conservative in the least, is getting the nomination based on the current political psychology of the average republican’s inclination to feel safe and threatened at the same time. Religious values are now taking a back seat to achieve what they wanted all along; a thug who will further demolish the congress and our founding document for more executive power.
I see a connection between Senator Coleman’s embrace of Rudy Giuliani and his fidelity to President Bush. Both of them have ill-disguised authoritarian streaks (Giuliani always looked like Elmer Fudd trying to play Benzino Napaloni). I can’t help but wonder if that sort of thing appeals to Senator Coleman. Perhaps he is a needy soul, looking for some strong authority figure to keep him in line.
Of course, raw opportunism cannot be ruled out whenever Senator Coleman’s name comes up.
Congress will demolish themselves…nancy needs no help in that regard…what a joke she is
