Obama Huckabee Win– SD 25 Race Close

Just returning from a late dinner at Holy Land in Northeast, I’ve got a twelve pack of cheap beer, a six pack of better beer and a night of watching the news in front of me!

8:03 :: Watching CNN Bill Bennett’s next book “The Virtue of Twinkies”

CNN is projecting Mike Huckabee as the Republican’s winner in Iowa. Romney has to be leveled at the loss he’s taking, and Giuliani has to be embarrassed.

8:10 :: Am I the only one who can’t seem to find a single election result for the special election? On the secretary of state’s website all I can find are the numbers by county — no?

8:15 :: With 60 percent Barack Obama has 35% of the caucus total. Hill and JRE are close behind with about 32%.

8:20 :: John McCain is already throwing in the towel over Iowa… in New Hampshire.

8:25 :: NBC is calling Iowa for Obama — if Obama wins and wins by 5% he’s going to be the story.

Check out http://www.idonthateamerica.com for results of the SD 25 race. He’s got Dahle down 49-48

8:28 :: I went out and bought beer! This has to go on later than 8:30

8:33 :: CNN is calling Iowa for Obama: I think Edwards is about to get hosed again — the story is going to be “OMG! Barack Obama won, and OMG Hillary didn’t!” and Edwards is going to get forgotten. Boo.

8:39 :: I think that Republicans shouldn’t get too comfortable behind Huckabee (this has happened before)

8:40 :: David Gregory is freakishly tall.

8:43 :: Both CNN and NBC have already started talking “historic election” — Wow

KEVIN DAHLE IS WITHIN ONE VOTE!

8:47 :: Hill coming in third? This is gonna hurt, but it won’t kill, the Clinton’s have too much prestige, money and organization, Andrea Mitchell just laid into Clinton’s party which could be worse she could be screaming.

The SD 25 results can be found here. Kevin Dahle is within 10 right now, this is a great fight and with how close it is keep an eye on it.

9:00 :: Dahle is down about 150 — here’s hoping he picks up some votes in Northfield.

Sounds like young voters showed up and got out for Obama. As a former chair of the Minnesota Young DFL outreach and GOTV among young folks can be difficult and it looks like the Obama camp may have the ticket.

9:10 :: Clinton to speak? She’s going to put the best face possible on a steaming shit sandwich. On MSNBC Andrea Mitchell is laying into Hillary Clinton, perpetuating the “Clinton is fake” meme. Mitchell saying the Clinton HQ rally is manufactured.

9:15 Edwards speaking. “Status quo lost change won… if you’re willing to have backbone and courage, willing to stand up to corporate greed you’re unstoppable….”

9:25 :: Clinton. Dude in the back has crazy facial hair. The guy with the pornstar brown mustache and the gray beard? Awkwardly mumbling “Hillary”? That dude. “Unprecedented turnout. Democratic White House in 2009.” Quite the “Go Team!” rah rah speech. Interesting speech… much more engaging than Edwards which was his stump speech… shit… that guy in the back I just made fun of — I think he may be blind. Christ. I just made fun of a blind guy.

9:30 :: Sibley county just came in big for Cox — all thats out is Northfield — this is going to be very very very very close. Dahle down 300 votes.

9:35 :: Genius! Hillary Clinton just marginalized the caucuses by pointing out the people who couldn’t show up because of the rigidness of the caucuses while still using the speech to pitch her as the most capable candidate. Genius dude.

9:40 :: Chuck Norris has giant teeth. All the better to kill prey with.

10:20 :: Joe Biden dropped out :(

    *How* cheap?

I’m getting SD 25 results just fine and am liveblogging over at http://www.idonthateamerica.com.

  2. 2 2 Sean

Just Miller Lite: and DJ — I just figured out what I did wrong… I’d like to see that link be specified a littler better — but thats just whining.

  3. 3 3 DJ Danielson

That isn’t too bad. By “cheap” I thought you meant Red Dog or Old Style.

The problem is that Edwards and Clinton are close enough that it can easily be spun as a tie for second, which I don’t think is as damaging as third. And like you said, Edwards is going to be ignored over this which really doesn’t do justice to how he has worked in Iowa to get to where he is.

SD25 is the most entertaining race of the night, this is going to be close. Of course, no Northfield precincts are in yet, which should help Dahle.

From what I’m watching (CNN), Edwards is getting plenty of buzz. I think he can consider this a victory.

Edwards’ anti-corporation, anti-job-creation, and anti-growth rants will hurt him in a general, but I see him picking up momentum in the primary. This is a huge week for Hillary and Edwards could become the clear #2 before January is over.

I was just doing some math on the SD25 race. Based on relative turnout from last time and this time and utilizing the margins in the Northfield precincts in 2006, I would expect Dahle to make up possibly 640 votes on Cox. This is of course if turnout patterns hold, which is hard to tell for the St. Olaf and Carleton. But if the numbers hold it should be enough for a Dahle victory.

I just have to say this, after watching most of the speeches this evening… Mike Huckabee is one hell of a communicator.

  9. 9 9 Ross

Northfield has not come in yet, its the only precints not in yet, and fairly liberal, Dahle is at a 300 vote deficit, something I think he can make up in Northfield with the colleges

Congrats Obama and Edwards, They BOTH defeated Hillary in Iowa, that’s incredible in it of itself, Two people defeated the Status Quo candidate, looks like I can vote for a Dem for President this year. hehe

  10. 10 10 Chris

    Sean,

It’s not just whining. You elected an incompetent Secretary of State and a fairly corrupt one at that.

  11. 11 11 Ross

    Oh God,
He made one Mistake for God’s sake
can you count the number of mistakes/screw-jobs that your FORMER SOS Kiffe(whatever) made on 2,000 hands???

  12. 12 12 Chris

P.S. Sean (or anyone else for that matter),

Since all precincts have optically scanned ballots, and voting machines that scan the ballots and report results on the spot, why is it that it’s now 2 hours after the polls have closed and not a single precinct has reported out of Northfield while the precincts from the most rural parts of the district have already reported in?

  13. 13 13 DJ Danielson

Try *every* other part of the district. We’re lost over here.

  14. 14 14 Chris

    Ross,

I can’t think of any and apparently neither can you, as you didn’t name any. I can think of another mistake by Ritchie that is almost as glaring as screwing up how voting is reported. He makes no mention of precinct caucuses on February 5. Does the Secretary of State not support our caucuses?

  15. 15 15 loveit

what the hell is going on in Northfield? The polls have been closed for 2 1/2 hrs and nothing has been reported. Every other result was reported over 1 hr ago.

  16. 16 16 john

start naming them Ross,, put up or shut up

  17. 17 17 Archer Dem

Holy Crap, huge win for Dahle. His margin of victory was triple what I calculated it was going to be based on turnout. Congratulations to the College Dems at St. Olaf and Carleton for an amazing job showing Pawlenty that it isn’t so easy to disenfranchise young voters!

  18. 18 18 john

how did he try to do that exactly? archer?

  19. 19 19 Chris

I am tired of hearing all the pundits on CNN talk about the results in Iowa. What I really want to hear is the reaction from Big Kahuna. As we all know, Big Kahuna is the prognosticator of prognosticators. The Nostradamus of MN Publius.

I want to hear some specifics on how Senator Clinton comes back. Please help me Big Kahuna.

A curious and naive liberal, Chris

  20. 20 20 Johan

Don’t bother with the sniping from these guys - the DFL picked this seat up by 1300!

  21. 21 21 donn

I am very saddened that Joe Biden dropped out. Even if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have been invited to the next debate thanks to the 4th in Iowa/5% rule. I’m still going to write his name in on the primary ballot come February 5th, and will vote for whomever the nominee is come the generals unless it’s John Edwards (not a big deal because Illinois traditionally is won handily by the Democrat nominee).

  22. 22 22 Ross

    Well John-
to name a few, putting down Native American Voter turnout, Supressing young voter turnout, sending out wrong information to voters, and not registering some voters, thats just a few, she lost get over it, name the mistakes Ritchie made aside from the email list. Do you have any? You put up or shut up, I put up.
I am saddened by Biden as well, actually I believe he got 5th behind Richardson.
Oh and John, Pawlenty tried, and he did try, to disenfranchise young voters by scheduleing the election on Jan. 3rd, right in the middle of Winter break for the college students, reliably Democratic, of St. Olaf and Carelton Colleges who reliably vote democrat and sent Rep. David Bly to the State House in 2006. Yet thanks to a great organization of the DFL and College Democrats we fixed these problems that pawlenty created and tried to disenfranchise young voters. now we have a veto-proof majority in the state senate.

  23. 23 23 Archer Dem

This was just the second day back to classes for St. Olaf and Carleton, plus many of the active students were likely to be gone to Iowa for the caucuses. It was carefully chosen to minimize youth turnout from those two colleges, especially after they contributed in large part to Cox’s defeat in 2006.

  24. 24 24 Kollege Kid

Ok, back to the subject at hand…

    YAH OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. 25 25 donn

Ross - yup, 5th. You can participate in the (god I hate saying this) Facebook co-sponsored debate if you come in 4th in Iowa, or have polled at 5% in a national poll. Since he didn’t come in 4th, and the most a national poll has had him at is 4%, he wouldn’t have been able to participate in the debate. Or he could’ve debated Kucinich and Gravel across the street.

  26. 26 26 DantheMan

Obama vs. Huckabee…. has a nice ring to it. At least it would be a spirited and articulate series of debates, unlike what we got with Kerry v. Bush or Gore v. Bush.
