The DFL candidates in the 3rd Congressional District will debate at least five times between now and the Feb 5th Caucuses. If you are undecided amongst our three spectacular Democrats, here is your chance to watch them in action and pick your favorite.
First up is the Almanac Debate, which will be shown live on TPT (usually channel 2) in the Twin Cities this Friday. Almanac begins at 7pm, but I imagine the debate will start later in the program.
Other, non-televised debates include:
Saturday, Jan. 12: Senate Districts 32 and 46 candidate forum at Brooklyn Park City Hall (5200 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN). 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 16: 3rd Congressional District candidate forum at the Minnetonka City Hall (14600 Minnetonka Blvd., Minnetonka, MN). 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Sean sez: this is not a forum, it’s a 3rd CD DFL meeting — all candidates have been invited and will be speaking, but it will not be a forum.)
Sunday, Jan. 27: Senate District 41 candidate forum at Bloomington City Hall (1800 W. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington, MN). 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 31: Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council candidate forum at Plymouth Creek Center (14800 34 th Ave. N., Plymouth, MN).
That’s a lot of debating. 3rd District Democrats will have no excuse for not being educated about their candidates.

This is wonderful. Let’s all make an effort to bring our neighbors and friends to at least one debate.
I agree - this is great for the voters in the 3rd. Any idea if any debates might be streamed after-the-fact on public access or community tv?
We should all at least send emails/make phone calls to our friends and neighbors to get them to watch the Almanac Program (Channel 2 at 7 pm) tomorrow to see the forum with all three candidates.
Compare this openness in the DFL, to Erik Paulsen in the GOP.
Looks like Paulsen is taking after Kline: See no constituents, Hear no constituents, Speak to no constituents.
For those who haven’t seen it, here’s Paulsen’s website:
http://www.paulsenforcongress.com/
It can be summed up as: “I got no info, but I’ll take your dough. Thanks! Erik.”
Ywoputt, how do you feel then about the Hillary express.
the whole Osama er, I mean Obama thing was nothing more than a political game to make voters feel like they had a choice and also to help take heat off Clinton. Make no mistake, the democRat elite sold the spot to Clinton back in 2004. :)
Kahuna, do you even read the diaries before commenting? Or do you just put your random musings wherever you feel like it?
little stones just wonders, er, ‘scuse me, “wanders”.
BK -
We are extraordinarily tolerant of commenters. But if you make the Osama/Obama connection one more time you will be banned. That kind of garbage will not be tolerated.
Bi Kahuna,
I agree 100%! These Dummocrats have their vores decided by the Hollywood Liberal Elites, and there’s nothing that can stop them!
Barack Mohammed Hussein Obama doesn’t stand a chance against these unstoppable Liberaltard Elite forces!
Zack,
It is your site so you make the rules. I will ask though if you will be applying this standard consistently. Though not many, there are a few posters here that consistently compare Bush to Hitler to make such a standard relevant to them as well. If there is rationale you can give that would allow one and not the other, I can think of a couple, stating them might allow for a clearer understanding of your standards.
Otherwise the fact that current candidate Franken has in the past said things every bit as offensive in the hopes of getting a laugh makes your rebuke of BK seem inconsistent.
Zack, I believe it was Mr Kennedy who started that.

Not that it will matter because you know as well as I that Hillary has already bought and paid for this. Hussien Obama never really had a chance.
Glad to see the skin here is wearing thin that you could not handle the osmama part.
Which is funny because you allow others to do the same kind of crap as long as it is aimed at Republicans.
Go lay by your dish. :)
As usual Republicans just use namecalling. My comments were not published on Republican blogs, because they were effective! I was very civil, just effective. This is another case of Republican whining. It is ok if I do it, but not if you do it.
The only skin that’s getting thin is the republiCons, from gettin’ whupped.
It’s got to really P them O that not only have the Reagan Democrats deserted the GreedOverPrinciples Party, real Republicans have, too.
Then again, it USED to be the “Independent - Republican” party; but not only have Reagan Democrats left it, Independents view the republiCons with suspicion these days, too. And, “rightfully” so!
Of course, when reasonable people consider that in today’s GreedOverPriniciples party, people like Michael Brodkorb and internet posters like BK here are “mainstream”, well, it’s no wonder the GOP is gettin’ whupped.
Tommy, I am couris as to how you explain 2000, 2002, 2004 to us all when you got whupped.
I am guessing you were off crying in a fetal postion someplace safe from the real world.
Zack, Tommy is using GrredOverPrinciples for the GOP party, are you going to scold him too or does this new rule only apply for politicians you like?
Maybe together we could turn this site into a politically corrct kind of thing and then we can spend all our time crying foul on the other for saying something that offended someone.
Big Kahuna,
I agree 100%. These Leftyliberals don’t deserve one bit of respect or courtesy. They deserve to be frequently ridiculed, harassed and disrespected, because their views on the issues are so different than ours!
Keep up the great work!
Zack, can we meet half way and you ban Typical instead? ;)
That, BK, was funny.
If TFRWG was truly so enamored with you BK he should have no problems “taking one for the team” and posting something ban worthy.
This post has morphed into a “ban BK or not”. If you want votes, then put me down for not. Every time I see the “Osama, er Obama” line in a text, that immediately translates to, “I’m a moron, so the next bit of text may be disregarded in pleno” When you think of it like that, BK is performing a public service. Bravo I say, but don’t think for a minute thaat I am, in any way, amused.
Tommy, I am couris as to how you explain 2000, 2002, 2004 to us all when you got whupped.
So, in the BK spirit:
I had three pages written, then I decided, “You’re such a fucking tool. I really dont’ care.”
So, there it is. Have at it BK, be a jackass and never ever offer anything of any substance with links to evidence or anything. Just be your pompous ass self. You have my vote
By the way,, it’s “curious”. Just saying.
Say, little stones?
Boy Blunder said: “You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on.”
He still thinks you’re base, little stones.
There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. ummmm yaaaahhhhh Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.
MnBue - “…thumbs up for Ashwin Madia and Jim Hovland, thumbs down for Terri Bonoff”
“Terri begins many sentences with “We need to”. Her ideas are jumbled and not “independent”. The interviewer even repeated a question in an attempt to get a better answer. In general, not a good presentation”
For Ashwin - “Actually this is not my Iraq answer, however I was impressed with his thoughtfulness on the political and economic side. His answer for providing help with economy was a green economy, with a long list of how that would work. Ashwin’s answers are better than my summary, I urge you to check him out. If I can find time in my schedule, I am going to help him out. Ashwin is great enough to inspire people like me to work for him.”

More evidence of Bonoffs unpreparedness and “business experience”. So where is that Bonoffs buddy who said i did not do my homework when i openly questioned her “business experience”.
At some point the DFL leadership needs to realize that especially suburban voters will not vote for incompetence and just party hacks. The candidate must be able to represent the party with his/her intelligence and competence. It is a changing America and i hope the party changes with it.
The Almanac Program was great to watch last night. For those of you who missed it or want to see it again, it will be on again at 7 pm TONIGHT- (Saturday, January 12th) on Channel 17 (TPT).
Don’t forget- DEBATE TODAY:
Saturday, Jan. 12: Senate Districts 32 and 46 candidate forum at Brooklyn Park City Hall (5200 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN).
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Sorry, I should have just made one post. After watching the Almanac Program last night, I realized that I may not be pronouncing Madia’s first name properly. Is the a-sound like the A in “apple” (ASH-WIN), or like the A in “awesome? (AWE-SHWIN)” I have also heard it pronounced like a U-sound like “USH-WIN.” Does anybody know?
I challenge the sponsors of this debate to question Bonoffs “successful business experience”. Was this a friend of the family who appointed her so she could pad her resume…..
Her performance in every public appearance gives credence and validity to this question.
I have heard it pronounced Ash-win the most like it is spelled. Hovland and Madia seem like good candidates after watching the show. I just came across this response to the tpt almanac show debate yesterday-
http://gavinsullivan.blogspot.com/2008/01/ashwin-kicks-ass.html
and http://www.mnblue.com/node/1016
Jesus, rm. Do you think a 700 employee company would appoint someone a VP so they can pad their resume?
Creating well-paying position for people who don’t really do anything only happens in the Government.
A stream of the discussion on TPT can be found at: http://www.tpt.org/almanac/. Only four questions were raised: Economy, Iraq, Immigration, and Ideology. I’ll supply my quick evals:
Economy:
Bonoff - C
Madia - C (although I appreciated the specific idea)
Hovland - B (stimulus idea is the most proven - it sounded like he was ready to expand but got cut off)
Iraq:
Bonoff - D (didn’t really have a plan or opinion)
Madia - A (well-though-out and with specifics - very good perspective)
Hovland - B
Illegal Immigration:
Bonoff - B (focus on business, recognize current contributors)
Madia - C (gave the “son of immigrant” story again - nice story but not an illegal immigration plan)
Hovland - B (recognized this issue is larger than what is happening inside our borders)
Ideology:
Bonoff - A (she is moderate, can work with both sides of aisle - that is what the 3rd likes)
Madia - B
Hovland - B
Sorry for the brevity, but it was a brief “debate”.
DM - I can’t believe you are so naive. Especially after you claim that you worked at a VP level position.
For Ex. Heard of Carlson companies. Maybe you would want to read up on the grandson. This is a common scenario in companies not in the limelight.
Please do your research on Eric Paulsen and Navarre Corp. I’ll be happy to do some of my opinions on this topic if u so choose.
Also ever wonder why that so called buddy of the CEO never answered my direct question on this topic ?
As someone who is not in the 3rd CD, I still found the candidate forum (I really don’t like the word ‘debate’ as it has a different meaning for this former forensicator) fascinating. It was obvious that each candidate has their weaknesses and strengths. Nevertheless, if you are a CD3 Dem, you should be thrilled that there is so much attention on your candidates and how it keeps the focus on them. From my perspective, any of those three would be a good congress-person.
“For Ex. Heard of Carlson companies. Maybe you would want to read up on the grandson. This is a common scenario in companies not in the limelight.”
- You are digging deep for an example. An heir to a fortune of a private company? That is a bit different than the avereage Joe or Jane working their way up to a leadership position. Let’s put the onus on you — what do you know about this particular situation that we all don’t? Why should we doubt her corporate experience?
“Compare this openness in the DFL, to Erik Paulsen in the GOP.”
- Is the guy suppose to crash debates? Left wing radicals do that but mainstream politicians have respect for etiquette. You either get invited to these forums or you don’t. FYI - Paulsen is scheduled to be on Almanac in 2 weeks and I presume he’ll be asked similar questions.
MRW - I think voices of reason such as yourself deserve responses. I agree with you. I’m likely voting for the Republican in this race, but I agree that the Dems are putting forth three good candidates. All have their strengths. I think Hovland is finding his rhetoric (you have to have that in this day and age, and Madia and Bonoff had a head start on him). One he has his soundbytes down, he is going to be a force.
“You are digging deep for an example. An heir to a fortune of a private company? ”
No it was a shallow dig. You asked for an example in the private sector I gave you one. Well if you have read about Tyco and Enron you are well aware that the CEOs ran those places any which way they wanted
“That is a bit different than the avereage Joe or Jane working their way up to a leadership position. ”
In my opinion, One cannot be an average Joe or Jane rising up the corporate ladder when the first time you are appointed an officer of a company is one in which you are family friends with the CEO.
“Let’s put the onus on you — what do you know about this particular situation that we all don’t? Why should we doubt her corporate experience?”
In my opinion, there have been open questions regarding how Eric Paulsen the CEO of Navarre ran this company. In my opinion Paulsen ran this company for 22 years as his fiefdom….until he was forced to sell.
http://www.startribune.com/business/11092791.html
“Amid delayed financial statements, accounting restatements, a possible delisting by the Nasdaq Stock Market, shareholder lawsuits, inquiring auditors and a search for a new chief financial officer, shares of the publisher and distributor of video games and consumer software have fallen from $19 to less than $4.
…..
Management, which qualified most responses Friday, said the early returns from that Texas-based company are pretty good.
…..
Navarre has been a big target of short sellers — skeptical speculators who bet against companies
…..
If management is to be believed, Navarre should be able to put up a few good quarters.
That would buoy Paulson’s credibility and float the stock.”
I watched the debate today in Brooklyn Park. Madia was the clear winner, but both Bonoff and Hovland did remarkably better than before.
At one point, Bonoff made some strange comments about pulling the plug on older citizens in regard to health care. After hearing Hovland’s excellent answer to the question, she had to make a comment something along the lines of “I want to be clear that I am NOT for pulling the plug.” It totally went against what she already had said and was weirdly stated. I was embarrassed for her.
I spoke to several others after the forum who all agreed on four things:
1- Madia won the debate.
2- Bonoff and Hovland have tremendously improved in their speaking skills.
3- Bonoff steals A LOT of Madia’s ideas. This is something I have heard others comment on in the past, but today was the first time I saw it first-hand. After Madia would answer a question, Bonoff would try to use his language and ideas. The people I spoke with did not seem bothered by this. They said that it was very obvious to everyone that she was not able to come up with intelligent responses on her own, and was desperate, so she simply used Madia’s exact responses.
4- Although Hovland and Bonoff improved their speaking skills, they did NOT improve in their knowledge of the important issues. When asked what solutions they had to offer in regard to pressing issues, they both frequently stated simply why the issue was important (what we all already know and agree on) rather than giving specific answers.
Madia has clearly thought through these pressing issues our nation is facing and has a clear, well-thought out solution to every issue presented. It was obvious to the crowd that he thinks critically about these important issues and will work hard in Washington to resolve them effectively.
“3- Bonoff steals A LOT of Madia’s ideas.”
Is it conceivable that two DFL’ers running for the same seat may share the same ideas? I think both candidates borrow soundbytes from the party rhetoric — that doesn’t mean one is stealing the other’s ideas.
