do you really think this will help folks come together after this endorsement fight? I have talked to three clinton supporters today that say if she is out, they will go to McCain. don’t fan the anger

This is totally unscientific, but all of the Clinton supporters I’ve talked to will stick with a Democrat no matter what - for the Supreme Court noms and a variety of other reasons.

There are a lot of clintonistas out there whos democratic loyalty is skin deep. It’s a strange phenomenon to watch: Obama is drawing indies and republicans over, and ‘democrats’ who are hardcore clinton supporters are all to willing to jump ship if Obama is the nominee.

    I welcome the shift.

I don’t like Obama or Clinton, but I’m not going to vote for McCain. I’ll vote for the best/least worst candidate this year, and that’ll be a Democrat!

I think Obama appeals to fear a lot - all of his stumping the last three weeks has been about the economics of despair. He should be using his charisma to advance intelligent solutions to problems rather than play on ignorant distrust of free trade.

MGM: Come on man. Are you serious? “economics of despair”? So, what should be saying: “Go shopping”? If you ask me, he is talking about the economics of reality, which you could call desperate in the case of the majority of Americans right now, and furthermore, he is talking about it in the context of bring the voters back into the game. He is ONLY candidate talking about the voters directly getting involved with policy. To me that is very possitive and optimistic, yet without having to feed us a line of bullshit about how great the damn economy is doing.

I guess I don’t want to get too deep into the weeds of unemployment or economic growth figures. And I agree with you that, for the most part, Obama has been great energizing voters who have otherwise been disillusioned with “politics as usual.”

But, with that said, I’m going to start off with an assumption that you (and other Publius readers) are educated. And educated people know that free trade is basically good. Bill Clinton knows that. His crowning achievement was NAFTA. If you disagree with this, then we’ll have to agree to disagree (though I’d encourage you to look into it in depth, because I think fair-minded investigation will lead you to believe likewise).

If we do agree, then I’d ask that you consider that it’s politics as usual to back-peddle on the Democratic party’s progress on free trade just to pander to uneducated, unemployed mill workers in Ohio.
