Pawlenty Brags About “Holding the Line on Taxes” the Day His Veto is Overridden

Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post asked Governor Pawlenty yesterday what his biggest accomplishment as Governor has been. Here is his response:

“I think many people appreciate the work that I’ve done on holding the line on taxes. I’ve vetoed every single tax increase my Democratic friends have proposed to put on my desk. I think I’ve done a good job of being a fiscal conservative.”

Well, there goes that line on the resume.

This must have been before the override.

How does the legislature overriding his veto prevent him from making this claim?

Are you trying to blame the Governor for YOUR tax increase? Wow, the polling on this must be worse than I thought.

What part of his statement is wrong?

“I think many people appreciate the work that I’ve done on holding the line on taxes.”

    I sure do

“I’ve vetoed every single tax increase my Democratic friends have proposed to put on my desk.”

Factual - just because the Dem’s overrode his veto to take money from everyone’s pocket doesn’t mean he didn’t try to stop it.

“I think I’ve done a good job of being a fiscal conservative.”

Well, actually there are a lot of conservatives that don’t think he’s gone far enough but given the legislative majority of the DFL I think he’s done a great job of avoiding more taxes. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to hold back the Dem’s from passing the biggest tax increase in MN history. It wasn’t for lack of trying.

“I think I’ve done a good job of being a fiscal conservative.” Not “a good job as Governor,” just “a good job as an ideologue.”

I have to hand it to the man, he knows his limitations.

Wow! That’s one hell of a stretch! The Guv vetos the biggest tax increase in Minnesota history, fights hard against an override, and you blame HIM for its passage? This really fits the liberal pattern of a refusal to accept responsibility for ones actions! This tax increase and its ramifications (both good and bad) fall squarely on the shoulders of the DFL. It would be refreshing if you could take responsibility for your actions for once! I hope everyone re-reads your post! Incredible!

Or Gov. Pawlenty is still vying for a spot on John McCain’s Cabinet if McCain should be elected. He is so entrenched in that campaign at the moment.

“I’ve vetoed every single tax increase my Democratic friends have proposed to put on my desk.” Apparently the sales tax increase for Carl Pohlad’s new stadium doesn’t fit into this category.

I think I remember when my kid was about 2 years old and jumped up and down and pouted and screamed something about ‘mark my words’ and ‘you’ll pay for this’. hmmmm

Timmy is copying his friend McCain. “My friends…” Is everyone John and Timmy’s friend, because they are no friends to me.
