John, you should be more specific - the GOP believes THEIR churches are at the same level of holiness as THEIR offshore tax shelters, and revenues may not be raised from those belonging to THEM.

Gipper-
Yes, we are all aware that to the GOP a church is at the same level of holiness as an offshore tax shelter, and revenue may not be raised from it.

KH,

If the founders felt that tithing was "unconstitutional", then they would have INCLUDED that clause while drafting! The Pilgrims came to escape religious persecution..........something the founders UNDERSTOOD and accordingly made allowances for the church to flourish (as it has). While peddeling the notion of taxing churches may fly at mnpublius, the average person will reject that proposition for the ridiculous idea it is!

The founders did not feel the need to get more specific than they did because they could not have imagined a time when about one in four of the U.S work force is employed by the government at some level. That it is unconstitutional for the state to establishing a religion also means they can not establish multiple religions. The fact that tax payers are giving money to "faith based" institutions of any sort or even allowing them special tax status at all is a violation on the constitution. Churches should be given no special status and be treated just like any other business.

The Seperation of Church and State does not appear in the Cosntitution. Though in principle that the Government shall not establish a national religion, thus gauranteeing freedom of and freedom from religion as a basic right. There are many who confuse this with being in the Constitution.

Where the issue comes up in with a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote in response to a letter from a Mininster from the Danbury Baptist Church in 1801. Jefferson replied in 1802.

Separation [spelled correctly] of church and state does not appear in the U.S. Constitution either.

By the way......Reagan may be physically dead, but he lives on in the hearts of many! Were just waiting for our candidate to be found and take back our party (like Goldwater and Reagan)!

Mockingbird,

Your "evidence" is anecdotal and borderlines insanity! The notion that the Feds would selectively go after Progressive churches vs. Conservative ones, has NO BASIS! This is typical unsubstantiated grand standing from the left. Get off the continuous IV influx of Daily KOS, Olberman, etc! Oh, and just where in OUR constitution are the words, "seperation of church and state"??? :)
