JNP Supporters: You Can’t Attack Him! Me: No, You Can 2

“The most disturbing analogy between the Gulf War and Nazi Germany isn’t, as President Bush and others suggest, between Saddam Hussein and Hitler. It is the striking parallel between the blind patriotism of the German people and the idolatrous patriotism that swept through our country and our churches. Signs of idolatry were evident throughout the war, from ‘Desert Shield’ to ‘Desert Storm’ to ‘Desert Prayer.’ President Bush was accompanied by Billy Graham on the eve of his decision to launch offensive military action in the Gulf; yellow ribbons filled local churches; and general Schwarzkopf expressed a common view that the outcome of the war was a sign of God’s intent for and blessing of U.S. policies. Perhaps most disturbing was President Bush’s manipulation and invocation of God throughout the war and the churches’ genuine failure to challenge his assertion that the war in the Gulf was a ‘just war.’” (Brave New World Order, 134)

“Faced with imminent death of the planet and confronted with a new world order based on poverty and militarism, Christians and churches in the United States must embrace the imperative of radical discipleship. Specifically, this requires embracing and encouraging tax resistance and nonviolence. It means that individuals, communities, and churches will be called on to take meaningful risks. Alternative faith communities and churches must take leadership in a faith-based tax revolt against the economic priorities of the U.S.-led new world order and the military priorities of the National Security State. Tax resistance can be expressed in many different ways, some more effective than others: living below a taxable income; refusal to pay the federal tax on our phone bills, which functions as a war tax; withholding the percentage of our taxes that are used for military purposes; enclosing a letter of protest when filing our tax returns; delivering the equivalent of taxes owed in food stuffs to our local Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offices.” (Brave New World Order, 151)

Who would have thunk it — Robert Beale and Jack Nelson Pallmeyer, anti-tax brothers in arms. Also for historical edification, the federal excise tax on phone bills he mentions in the book was partially repealed last year.

“Dietrich Bonhoeffer, killed by Hitler after being implicated in an assassination plot, once said that to be a patriot in Nazi Germany meant praying for the defeat of his country. I believe his difficult words are equally appropriate for us: praying and working for the defeat of our country in the context of its goals and priorities within the new world order is a gospel imperative.” (Brave New World Order, 156)

A couple things. First anyone who is saying that I’m providing these quotes outside of context ala MDE is stretching things. I’ve tried to make sure that there are relatively lengthy quotes to get them in context and I have presented them with a minimum of editorial content.

We’re going to have to deal with Al Franken’s satire taken out of context and Jack Nelson Pallmeyer’s more academic works taken out of context to argue otherwise is wrong headed.

    BINGO!!!

    We have a winner!!!!

If you cannot recognize the opposition’s “strategery”, the opposition is going to win.

And today’s GreedOverPrinciples party is all about a “strategery” that includes “(s)he who wins doesn’t care that the loser cries ‘foul!’; the important thing is that the loser cries.”

“…praying for the defeat of his country. I believe his difficult words are equally appropriate for us: praying and working for the defeat of our country in the context of its goals and priorities within the new world order is a gospel imperative.” (Brave New World Order, 156)

Jack Nelson Pallmeyer has called for the deaths of honorable American soldiers throughout the world. He prays for the defeat of America at the hands of terrorists because he hates our soldiers efforts to bring democracy and peace to the world. How can we send someone to the Senate who wants to work towards defeat and not American victories? Democrats have no sense of how dangerous the world is and show it by nominating this man. Do we need an appeaser representing Minnesota in the Senate? Do we want a man who has written that the very Gospel of Jesus tells us Americans must be defeated?

Gee that was easy… I suppose having a wounded Iraq War vet say it would seal the deal.

What TPT and Sean continually fail to grasp is that while any candidate can be attacked those attacks range in effectiveness and validity.

Finding serious flaws with GWB and the neocon philosophy might not get JNP the votes from the 25% of those that still approve of the presidents performance but I doubt Franken was going to get any of those anyway. Franken’s issues are ones that will alienate him from Democrats as well as the independent voters that will be needed to win the election. They are also completely valid criticisms which Franken has failed to address in any meaningful way. The fact that high level elected Democrats have been among those taking issue with Franken should make that obvious to all but the most blind Franken supporter.

Franken simply has no positives other than money to counter his crippling negatives. He moved here only to run for senate and has no comprehension of Minnesota culture or values. The idea that Franken is somehow better able to connect with “every-day Minnesotans” than a local professor is wrong headed and misguided. The fact that his negatives poll substantially worse than Coleman should make that point obvious as well.

Satire can be in poor taste and intellectually offensive and simply reminding people it is satire doesn’t change the underlying issues with the joke. George Allen said his Macaca statement was supposed to be funny but it rightly was viewed as more than a joke and cost him an election.

    Makes ya wonder, doesn’t it?

Obviously, the GOP knows that they can attack Franken with impunity now; since Franken’s not endorsed, no one - the DFL, the DSCC, etc - can help.

So, my thoughts are the GOP is desperately trying to knock Franken out as he poses the greatest threat to Coleman.

How desperate? Well, desperate enough to use republiCon Ron for the attack dog; surely they’re smart enough to realize the danger of usin’ republiCon Ron (and the obvious “hypocrisy!” charge) to do so.

But, the GOPers did anyway…..to the point that many in the GOP are callin’ for republiCon Ron’s head, this very weekend.

  5. 5 5 TwoPuttTommy

“Franken simply has no positives other than money to counter his crippling negatives.”

Yeah, “right”. You go with that.

I’ll go with the only positive with Norm “Smokescreen” Coleman, R=Lapdog, is that if you don’t agree with him now, don’t worry - it’s just a matter of time before you do because he changes his postitions more often (and faster, too!) than Cher changes costumes in concert.

Perhaps you would have had a point 4 years ago. However look at the polls on Iraq. We all think that going to Iraq was a mistake. That we all should have asked more questions and been less blindly patriotic. I do not break the law as a peacemaker, however I can and have done many of the actions that are recommended there.

And anytime, that these books are brought up, there is a major opportunity to discuss the books as a whole. In the campaign, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer has shown repeatedly where he can take questions like these and not only address them, but also turn those questions to his advantage. The themes of these books are themes that Democrats win on.

What these books show is that Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer had good judgment, that he saw the direction of things long before the rest of us. Ask a question about the books, and Jack can talk about what he said would happen and what has happened.

When anyone asks about a question about his specialty, Jack can talk about his international knowledge is directly applicable to who we want speaking for Minnesota in the US Senate. Jacks moves audiences and changes minds. Imagine someone like that speaking for Minnesota in the US Senate.

  7. 7 7 Kerosene Hat

    TPT,

What does Coleman’s chameleon nature and other negatives have to do with Franken’s lack of positives and incredibly high negatives in polls? Why do you consistently change the subject when challenged on an honest point? Are juvenile one liners the only communication method of which you are capable?

The GOP is attacking Franken because they can. Because it is easy and will taint other Democrats by association. That is why other Democrats like Ellison, Walz and McCollum have done what they have done with their criticisms of Al. They are trying to build a fire wall between Franken and the rest of the party.

  8. 8 8 amuseinc

Anybody who thinks that the coming general election will be about changing minds through discussion has not been paying attention. I don’t see a lot of polite dissertations coming from Norm the Weasel.

Hell, Norm would effectively use Jack’s intellectualism against him. JNP has not a hope of getting a word in edgewise against our slippery Senator Coleman. As the Republican “Everyman,” Coleman goes head-to-head with the “Egghead” Professor on National Security, Domestic Economics and who can best represent salt of the earth Minnesotans, the Republican mud will fly against JNP much like it is flying against Franken now. Who do you want representing Minnesota, an out of touch with common life professor or a hardworking guy with a beatiful wife who likes Hockey?

If you think the same people who are bringing up an 8 year old satiric article in a “pornographic” Playboy magazine, aren’t going to have a field day with an author calling for the military defeat of America worldwide you don’t know Republicans.

By the way, has anybody vetted our Peace Professor’s political and charity donations for the last 20 years to make sure that none ever reached Al Quieda, Hammas or any of a zillion potential political landmines? Has JNP ever donated time, money or supported the PLO?

  9. 9 9 Grace Kelly

Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer does alot of charity and peace work, he walks the talk. Picking on the charity work, would highlight the charity work and all the good works. Jack has been dedicated to non-violent tactics, even when war was popular. Attacking Jack, will simply highlight the good things that he has done.

  10. 10 10 TwoPuttTommy

“Why do you consistently change the subject when challenged on an honest point?”

    KH, here’s what you said:

““Franken simply has no positives other than money to counter his crippling negatives.””

In your world, whereever that may be, is that really, Really, REALLY considered an “honest point”?

  11. 11 11 TwoPuttTommy

‘Picking on the charity work, would highlight the charity work and all the good works. ‘

Kelly, no offense, but: did you have a point to make?

  12. 12 12 Grace Kelly

Look at the story arcs and look at the high contrasts:

Corruption of Republicans including McCain and Norm will a strong continuing theme. Lobbyists and trips will be hitting those themes hard.

Contrast this with Jack who has no lobbyist connects, no PAC connections and no lobbyist history. Meanwhile Al has the tax thing, the playboy thing and his business connections.

Lies and flip flopping is going to be a big thing with McCain and Norm. Jack is a straight arrow, always consistent. Al is trying to be both things sometimes and it shows.

Look at image - warmongering McCain and Norm, with their trophy pretty wives, and spotted marriage history in contrast the Minnesota norm Jack. Al does ok.

Now add the Minnesota flavors of courtesy and image. Norm is a slimey weasel. Al has dings from satire and from the playboy article. Jack is exactly what Minnesota expects and wants.

When Jack says US should not succeed in taking Iraq’s oil, people nod. This is Minnesota ethics. Minnesota does not want to dominate another country. We want to be self sufficient - use E-85, use wind power and use solar power. We can take all the money we are investing in war and spend it on converting to sustainable, renewable energy, with money leftover for many domestic programs being money starved now. Jack really has a strong courageous positive message, that somehow Al’s campaign has not been able to generate.

In this year of nasty corruption and bleak economical news, it is the change-hope-vision candidates like Jack, like Obama who are going to win.

  15. 15 15 TwoPuttTommy

Kelly, you realize that the KarlRovian types really don’t care about the truth, doncha?

republiCons: “JNP is a Rev. Wright godless ivorytower pinhead that hates America - check out his book where he writes that Jesus wants American soldiers to die.”

JNP: “well, what I really wrote is…”

republicons, interrupting: “And not only does this whackjob psuedo-academic pray America loses, he thinks abortions should be on-demand, and paid for with tax dollars.”

JNP: “…that my feelings on the separation…”

republiCons: “JNP really hates our God. And America. And he wants to ban The Bible.”

    JNP: “…of Church and state…”

republiCons: “JNP is a tax-cheat, that didn’t pay the taxes on his books - books about hating America, and praying America loses the war against extremist terrorists. JNP really, Really, REALLY hates our God, the God of this Christian Nation. Not only does he want to ban The Bible, he’s a tax cheat.”

    etc, etc, etc.

Anybody that doesn’t think the ol’ republiCon EchoChamber isn’t gonna trash JNP, if JNP gets the endorsement, simply isn’t paying attention.

republiCons don’t care if the smear is true; they only care that they get enough voters to believe it’s true to swing the election.

  16. 16 16 TwoPuttTommy

    Archer Dem, I disagree.

But what I really find disagreeable, is the idea that only one of the candidates can win - and there are those in both the Franken and the JNP camps that are spouting that nonsense.

Sure, I admire the passion in both of the camps; but there are those in both camps that need to take off the blinders and focus on the object of the mission: taking out ol’ Smokescreen and taking back Wellstone’s Seat.

And that, my friend, ain’t gonna be easy - especially with the (lack of) rules Team Smokescreen plays by.

  17. 17 17 wow

As a Republican I ask my Democratic Party friends for one thing.

    Please endorse Al Franken.

  18. 18 18 Kerosene Hat

    TPT,

Yes, I do. Especially given the context that you failed to address and understanding the other candidates that have been in the race for the DFL nomination. The polls, and comments from Democrats with more experience, insight and pull in with the public and party than you seem to give my thoughts some credibility.

Franken’s problems are real and no matter how many smokescreens his supporters put up by either talking about Coleman’s problems or making up problems about other Democrats won’t change that.

Many people are sick of the politics used by Clinton and the neocons. Franken and his minions using the same tactics won’t endear him to anybody. That Franken’s defense against the honest criticism of McCollum was that she was dividing the party is laughably sad. Franken is the one who moved here to run for office. The one who decided to believe Bush instead of Wellstone when it came to the war. Franken is the one that will be back living in his New York apartment if he looses the nomination or election. A more honest person would have addressed Betty’s valid concerns rather than try and toss her under the bus.

  19. 19 19 Charley

Sean, here is what I am getting from you on this.

    1. Republicans slime; that’s what they do.

    2. Republicans don’t need the slime to be true.

    3. Republicans will attack Franken on issues like taxes, his old skits, his previous outlandish statements, old Playboy articles, and so on.

    4. Republicans will attack Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer by pulling sentences out of context from his books and making Jack seem extreme.

    5. I, Sean Broom, would rather debate taxes and old Playboy articles than argue policy with Norm Coleman.

Sean, I can go along with you on every point except the last one. Why in the world don’t you want to have a policy disagreement with Norm Coleman? Do you really figure that Coleman has any strength in that area compared with JNP?

I think Coleman is quite beatable on policy. I would like to talk about policy … war policy, infrastructure policy, education policy, energy policy, environment policy. Don’t you realize that so far Coleman has Franken playing Coleman’s game. And Franken can’t even answer the smears without appearing un-senatorial. Let’s pick the battlefield ourselves, and I say let’s let us do battle with the Republicans on issues of public policy. I think we can win that way. We know that Republicans will lie and spin; that’s what they do. But we will be playing on our home field at least. It is the only chance we have against Norm’s pretty smile and slippery ways.

  20. 20 20 Dan

Christ Almighty, its another week and another shitstorm of bad publicity for Al Franken. I can’t wait for next week’s bad news.

The problem here is not just the baggage (which is bad enough) its that the Franken campaign is so incredibly incompetent that this stuff wasn’t dug up and addressed at the beginning. Of course, had all this come out at the beginning, his campaign probably would not have gone anywhere.

Yet he is still a far more viable candidate than Pallmeyer.

Norm Coleman is laughing his ass of at the DFL.

  21. 21 21 TwoPuttTommy

Just to recap - you made broadbrush, absolute statements, and bitched when called on ‘em.

Now, you’re backin’ away from them broadbrush, absolutist statements.

  22. 22 22 Archer Dem

    TPT,
Even if JNP is not the strongest candidate to take on Coleman, I don’t believe for a second that Al Franken is either. I believe that the reason we don’t have a “top-tier” candidate that has both the positions and the record to take on Coleman is because of the hype surrounding the Franken candidacy and its effect on scaring away other potential candidates. Also, you still didn’t make the case for Franken. The case wasn’t made at the beginning and I don’t feel its been made since then. I’m going to the convention and voting for the candidate that I believe in, that I believe is right on the issues, and I’m not going to give into a meme of electability and inevitability.

  23. 23 23 amuseinc

I wonder if the Franken campaign will look better once they are not fighting a three front war from Norm the weasel, the “Godlike” JNP, and the hidden hack supported by McCollem; Cerisi? Yah think? Once the nomination is done, will it become a war of ideas and mud between Franken and Norm the Weasel? Probably.

Personally I think that Ellison, and the rest should have stayed out of this. It makes me question the good sense of the Representative to enter this with no upside for him other than kowtowing to the Party Bigwigs. Disappointing to be sure to see JNP on one side in the open and Cersis on the other hidden side attacking the person who will be the candidate.

  24. 24 24 Kerosene Hat

    TPT,

What the hell are you talking about? I gave an opinion that was backed up with actual information. Nothing absolutits or broad brush. You then took one line out of context to make it look like something it wasn’t. I then stood by my previous statement while repeating and clarifying the previous rational. More or less the exact opposite of what you are claiming.

Meanwhile you still have failed to address any of my points. You are at least consistent in you tactics. As dishonest as they are.

  25. 25 25 Dan

Why is the reaction to the fact that four (of the five) members of Minnesota’s Democratic congressional delegation think this is a problem is that they should butt out? If I wasn’t already so down on Franken, I think my reaction would be that there really is a problem. Seriously, how much bad publicity can a candidate withstand?

As far as Franken’s wars, his biggest enemy is himself.

  26. 26 26 Betty M

I took down that Bonoff twit, and I’ll take care of your mangy little Franken, too! Why, my little party’s just beginning. Thought you’d be pretty foxy, didn’t you? Well! The last to go will see the first three go before him! How about a little fire, Obama?

    TPT,
Do you ever ad any information to your posts or are they all as lacking in substance as your sense of honesty? I made those points, point being shorthand for opinions supported by noted observations, and you have said nothing. But you never say anything do you. You do nothing other than hid behind rhetoric while providing no counter observations and hypothesis. Instead you pretend make up you own definitions of words like “point” and pretend it you are having a discussion. Simply cutting and pasting segments from my posts only suggests you are unable to comprehend them in their entirety. I didn’t realize that only being able to post one liners meant you were only able to comprehend one phrase at a time as well.

Franken supporters are the same as neocon Bush supporters. Which explains why TPT went from Republican to Franken cultist. The same mentality infects the brains of each group. They view any criticism as some sort of conspiracy and claim all those who don’t agree with them are disloyal to either the party or country. They refuse to deal with the issue at hand and instead change subjects and create definitions that have never before existed. Then as a final argument they do what so many like Mockingbird, lojasmo and others do. They try to discount other opinions and tell everyone to quit whining and take it because they are the ones in charge and disent will not be tolerated.

Franken supporters claiming that Ellison, Walz and McCollum are dividing the party would be funny if it weren’t so pathetically sad. To think for a minute that it is not Franken’s self created issues and inability to handle them and instead some of the DFLs most respected elected officials that are the problem is absolutely ridiculous. Of course the pathology that is core to Franken supporters won’t allow them to see their mistakes any more than a neocon can.

  32. 32 32 Charley

Sean, I have been taking a step back and thinking about these two posts of yours from a different perspective.

Franken has had a series of blows in the past few weeks. First there was the unemployment insurance “story.” Then there was the “unpaid taxes story.” Most recently has been the Playboy “story.”

Each of these smears has followed roughly the same path. First Michael Brodkorb does opposition research and finds something he thinks is juicy. Second, Brodkorb breaathlessly publishes it in his blog. Third the Star Tribune, sorely lacking in surviving reporters to research and write their own stories, print it (usually after getting the Republican party to provide a quote for cover). Finally, other media outlets like AP cover it because of the Strib article.

Now notice what has been coming next. Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer is asked repeatedly about Franken’s woes, but JNP remains completely silent on the question. As Jack’s volunteers move into high gear in the final days proceeding the Rochester convention, they are totally forbidden from mentioning any of Franken’s so-called scandals and they are specifically trained to emphasize Jack’s strengths instead.

Jack’s supporters have written letters to the Strib and elsewhere defending Franken as an honest and honorable person. They have defended him in multiple blogs, comments to blogs, and conversations. Not because we ever thought that Franken was a particularly good candidate. We never did. But we defended Franken against the smears because the smears were lies and Franken is, in fact, a good guy who deserves better. We would do the same for anybody, Sean, just because it’s right.

Now to you, Sean. As far as I can tell, Brodkorb didn’t do any of the opposition research you mention. You did that yourself. You started that discussion in your own blog and Brodkorb stops by to see what the fuss is about. One can only imagine that at some point the right-wing blogs will begin picking up the story from here, loudly proclaiming that there is blood on the floor in the lefty blogosphere. Who knows, maybe the Strib will even pick up the story at some point.

Sean, I fully recognize that your motives may be quite admirable here. Perhaps you are a team-player Democrat who just happens to feel that Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer makes a poor pick for the party. Or perhaps you actually have your own policy objections to Jack’s positions and you feel a moral obligation to make sure he doesn’t get elected to the senate.

There is the off-chance, however, that you simply are getting a bit too partisan in supporting your candidate Franken. Perhaps you feel so strongly that Franken should be nominated that you have come to resemble Michael Brodkorb in some ways.

I cannot see inside your heart, Sean. But I do hope you will begin to consider Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer supporters as potential Franken voters, should Franken get the endorsement. We Jack supporters have certainly been thinking of you that way for quite a while. Which is why we keep calling. Which is the more practical reason why we absolutely refuse to participate in the Republican swiftboating. In spite of believing that Jack would clearly make the best senator. In spite of believing that Jack is clearly the superior candidate for the party and the nation.

  33. 33 33 Political Muse

Charley: While I have no doubt that Jack would make a great Senator, I have to wonder if he isn’t just a little bit too left to win.

The man has a wonderful story to tell and his social justice message inspires me and obviously you but I just don’t see it playing for a large swath of Minnesota that he would need to win the seat.

  34. 34 34 Archer Dem

Many people thought Paul Wellstone was too left to win. I remember that and I was 5 when he won for the first time. But he won because he was an honest candidate that ran on progressive values. He understood that presented the right way, values that are often deemed “too left” actually fit with the majority of Minnesotans. Until we are willing to go out on a limb and nominate people such as Jack, we’ll never get the representation we desire and deserve. Franken would be a monumental improvement over Coleman, but he seems like a compromise. We’re compromising what we could have out of fear. It isn’t only the Republicans who use fear to defeat our candidates, sometimes we do it ourselves before they even get a chance.

  35. 35 35 TwoPuttTommy

    “TPT,
Do you ever ad any information to your posts or are they all as lacking in substance as your sense of honesty? “

Hey - I jumped “right” down into the gutter to be with you, pal.

  36. 36 36 Kerosene Hat

    TPT,

Nothing I said would considered the gutter by anybody with an I.Q over 60. My opinions were backed up with rational observations. “Points” as you have now learned. As you have proven over and over again you have never been anyplace other than the gutter with any of your posts. You consitantly misrepresent what others say and then attack their character, something you often can know nothing about, instead of countering their statements.

Maybe you should try taking responsibility for once instead of blaming others for your juvenile behavior. Nobody but you makes that decision. You constantly disparage the GOP for being a “small tent” party and then do whatever you can to insult and drive people away from the DFL. Unless they agree with you completely they are in the gutter or deserve some sort of juvenile attack. One you will always claim you were driven to use and as such never really your fault. Your past posting under multiple names just showed what kind of person you are. One that is willing to lie and cheat as long as you can make up some sort of rationalization and blame others. If you want the DFL to turn into the liberal version of the neocon Republican party you are doing a good job.

  37. 37 37 TomLindquist

If Franken does win the endorsement, it may actually be the non-satirical quotes (i.e., when Al is trying to be serious) such as this one from a 2004 interview in Playboy magazine that the Republicans use to eventually bring him down: “Do you see yourself ever holding office? Al Franken: No. I would be crushed by the sense of responsibility. Voting on whether to authorize the use of force is a big decision, especially on a close call. I don’t know if I could handle that. That’s what you’re doing when you elect someone: You’re giving them the opportunity to handle it.” [Jan 2004, http://www2.playboy.com/magazine/20q_archive/al-franken-03.html.

“Nothing I said would considered the gutter by anybody with an I.Q over 60.

Hey, if that’s what you were told, that’s what you were told.

And as long as you’re gonna believe everything you’re told, you might as well keep believing this, which is what you posted earlier:

““Franken simply has no positives other than money to counter his crippling negatives.””

But, tell me - who did tell you that?

Unlike you TPT I don’t have anybody telling me what I should say or post. You can continue to make stuff up if you like and hope it applies to those who disagree with you but that is your choice to be delusional and or lie.

The observation that led to the idea that Franken has no positives other than money include many of the comments by my DFL wife and other s who have worked for DFL ideals for decades. Some of whom are DFL elected official that have been quoted in the paper. Franken moved to Minnesota to run for Senate and his money immediately sucked all the air out of the room. He hired lots of people to help ensure loyalty, including one of the founders of this blog, and to make sure other campaigns could not. He was a supporter of the war despite claiming that Wellstone was a hero and GWB an idiot. Anybody can put up a website with policy positions that seem attractive to a designated demographic. What Franken can’t do is suddenly become Minnesotan or white wash his history.

“Unlike you TPT I don’t have anybody telling me what I should say or post.”

Go with that, KH - it works for you.

“The observation that led to the idea that Franken has no positives other than money include many of the comments by my DFL wife and other s who have worked for DFL ideals for decades. “

Apparently, they only tell you what to think. And they’ve done a heckuva job. KH.
