Good ad I hope it gets a lot of play… Mom’s know best especially when talking about senile old warmongers.
Certainly that Mom knows more about keeping our country secure than a guy who has lived through some of the ugliest aspects of war as a POW. American children will be much better served by a President who understands the brutality of war than a candidate who only understands the politics of war.
John McCain knows more about the real costs of war than I or most of you will never know. We can debate if what we’re fighting for is worth the cost, but to suggest that McCain is out of touch with what that cost is is completely ignorant.
I don’t think anybody’s going to challenge John McCain’s knowledge of the cost of war, but that doesn’t mean that his policy positions when it comes to war are unimpeachable or unquestionable. Frankly, this ad leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth as well, but I think it raises a legitimate point.
McCain’s knowledge of the ‘cost of war’ is quite suspect. He stated that the war in Iraq would probably only last months, and that we would be ‘greeted as liberators’
Half a trillion dollars and countless lives later, where have we gotten over there. It’s a fucking shambles…and McCain thinks it’s just goddamned peachy.
Seriously, how anybody can conflate McCain’s experiences forty years ago with his current tenuous grasp of the realities over there (doesn’t know Suni from Shia, for instance)is incomprehensible. Those who do so, need a serious reality check.
Some one who knows a thing or two about war and commanding in the military had this to say about Senator McCain.
Retired General Wesley Clark
“I know he’s trying to get traction by seeking to play to what he thinks is his strong suit of national security,” Clark said of McCain while speaking from his office in Little Rock, Arkansas. “The truth is that, in national security terms, he’s largely untested and untried. He’s never been responsible for policy formulation. He’s never had leadership in a crisis, or in anything larger than his own element on an aircraft carrier or [in managing] his own congressional staff. It’s not clear that this is going to be the strong suit that he thinks it is.”
Resume aside, though, Clark also took issue with the Arizona Republican’s instincts on national security. “McCain’s weakness is that he’s always been for the use of force, force and more force. In my experience, the only time to use force is as a last resort. … When he talks about throwing Russia out of the G8 and makes ditties about bombing Iran, he betrays a disrespect for the office of the presidency.”
Two very important points
1. McCain seems only to be interested in force without temperament
2. McCain has never commanded any unit larger than a flight unit on an aircraft carrier
To me perhaps most alarming for John McCain as our leader moving through the 21st Century, he refuses to even familiarize himself with a computer. He refuse to use email and insists his wife runs computers for him. I cannot believe we would trust our future to someone so firmly stuck in the past.
Let’s hope the little boy doesn’t become a cop. Otherwise, he might have to arrest bin Laden.
I’m with the General. The conception that John McCain would be ‘good for National Security’ is a farce.
Senator Obama serves on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and knows something about the cost of war and the country’s obligation to military veterans.
I expect Obama’s VP selection to have experience and strength in National Security, and not just from shopping for rugs in ‘safe Iraqi markets’ with Lindsey Graham.
Okay where’s the bold ad?
You have move on dot org repeating the lie.
Just curious do you want the terrorists to come to America and try to kill us again.
I heard an interesting point on the radio today. In 1993 after the first World Trade Center Attack the Clinton adminstration used the court system to stop the terrorists. Are embassies were attacked, the USS Cole was attacked, and the World Trade Center was attacked along with the Pentagon.
George Bush went after the terrorists and tried to get the military to kill the terrorists including Bin Laden. Since 9-11 we have been attacked Oh wait a minute we haven’t been attacked.
That will be daring for Move On and you guys to tell that truth!

“Senator Obama serves on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and knows something about the cost of war and the country’s obligation to military veterans.”
He has served on that committee for a whopping three years, with two of those years being, to a more or lesser extent, campaigning for President. I wonder how much he has learned?
Walter Hanson, Minneapolis, MN, I agree 100%
“You have move on dot org repeating the lie.”
Could you elaborate on what the lie exactly is? These moonbats need to be taken down.
Thank you for saying the well distributed talking points we are supposed to repeat over and over.
Great Job!
“Since 9-11 we have been attacked Oh wait a minute we haven’t been attacked.”
Since 9-11, Muslim terrorists have attacked London, Madrid, Bali, and other targets. No, none of those are American soil, but to those terrorists, we are all the same enemy. Attacking London is, for them, not too much different from attacking New York.
Besides, we are dealing with people who are airing centuries-old grievances. Why do you think “Crusader” is such a term of opprobium when the Crusades ended over 700 years ago? Seven years without an attack? That, in the scheme of things, is just a long weekend.
Were the more than 4,000 brave soldiers who have died in Iraq not Americans? Remember that George Bush, Dick Cheney and every other official has both stated and even proved that there was no connection between Iraq and any of the terrorist attacks listed by Mr. Hanson. George Bush failed to get bin Laden, failed to finish off Afghanistan and has made Americans everywhere less safe because of his policies.
The people behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are all in prison. I guess Clinton could have followed Bush’s approach and attacked a country that had nothing whatsoever to do with the bombing. That doesn’t seem to have worked out so well, though.
Walter,
Iraq is the reason we have not had another terrorist attack? who are you kidding?
I thought the ad was magnificent, sure I have got something for hot soccer moms who love their kids, but I think it was deeper than that. McCain and the rest of the warmongers can’t be allowed to bring another generation, one that was just born, into this war. Those who argue that this war has brought us more security are crazy, we as a nation are going into massive debt, the economy is tanking, oil prices are on the rise, and its all because of this “righteous” war.
“Attacking London is, for them, not too much different from attacking New York.”
Right, because everyone knows that them stewpid A-rabs kan’t, like, rede a map and stuff.
Swiftee… which is it… either the monolithic Muslim hoard is attacking all of “Western Civilization” in a great struggle or it is a bunch of religious whackjobs going after the USA. You rightwingers have never shown the “who” of this big threat and done even less to fight it. Witness Iraq which strengthened Iran in the region and has weakened us everywhere in the world… if the Republican administration was a baseball team they would have fired the coach several years ago.
OK, fair enough, so Senator McCains service to our country in combat and volunteering to stay in POW camp with his comrades even when given the option to leave was 35 years ago.
Did you realize that today, Senator McCain has two sons in the US military, including one in the combat zone? So while this lady on the Moveon ad makes a nice, tug-at-the-heartstring commercial, John McCain knows exactly what a surge means. It means his own son is now in the combat zone.
There are plenty of areas to try to poke holes in McCain. I’m telling you, his understanding of what military action means to America isn’t one of them.
Boy one persons challenges the liberals and they go nuts.
Okay to try to rebut you folks:
Dan:
We didn’t get all the people behind the 1993 World Trade Center into jail. There was this guy Bin Laden who didn’t think the attack worked and ordered another one. So much for that theory.
Oh we got those guys into jail so why were our embassies attacked in Africa in 1998? Why was the USS Cole attacked? That’s becaue the terrorists were still around to dream new plans. Bin Laden is more focus on trying to stay in hiding to save his life than dreaming up a new attack. Not to mention part of George Bush’s war of trying to cut off communications and their funds.
Randy:
What US City or US target has been hit? The streak before 9-11 was US targets. World Trade Center, our embassies, the USS Cole. The attacks since 9-11 have been met to try to break the alliance. The Madrid attack was meant to help get rid of a government that was supproring the US. London last time I looked was in England. Paris last time I looked was in France.
Amusenic:
Keep in mind Iraq was a threat because as proven by Richard Clarke (a person who some people think should be Obama’s vice President nominee) was developing an atomic bomb in the 1990’s and was close to finishing it. In the hands of Saddam or terrorists that would be deadly since Saddam used chemical weapons on his own people. Further Iraq was a place that supported terrorists. The administration never claimed that they were part of 9-11, but that doesn’t mean they were a threat. And if you want to criticize Bush for not getting Bin Laden keep in mind Bin Laden was alive on January 20, 2001 because Clinton refused to order the possible attacks that could kill him or for those people who wanted to prosecute the terrorists the chance to prosecute him when he was offered to us. Blame Clinton not Bush for that.
Yoni:
What do you know. You believe that a self-admitted war criminal (John Kerry) is a great man. Because we invaded Iraq Libya suddenly fearing they might be attacked decided to voluntarily show their plans on nuclear weapons and they were much further along than anybody suspected. Didn’t Libya years ago plan an attack that killed hundreds of people on an airline flight that killed kids and non military targets. Oh I forgot terrorists can kill kids and you don’t care. John Mccain if he might kill a kid than you care.
Keep in mind the woman is saying John Mccain wants us to be at war for a hundred years in Iraq. Mccain was referring to the fact that troops might have to stay for years. He pointed out correctly that we still have troops in Germany and Japan even though the war ended 63 years ago.
And two more facts that this mother doesn’t understand.
* We have a volunteer army. We don’t have a draft. John Mccain can’t grab that baby when he grows up to be a solider because there is no draft. (And the only people who talk about restoring the draft are Democrats by the way)
* Doesn’t that baby have their own say? Everybody praises Cindy Sheenan and talks about her horrible ordeal. They forget that her son made a decision to join the armed forces because he wanted to! What else will this mom dictate? The wife the son will have? The college he goes to? Doesn’t sound like a fun Mom.
