Coleman Ad Situation Takes a Turn for the Bizarre (Updated)

So, I’m not even sure what to say here. This is just… well, really weird. I don’t know what’s in the water coolers at the Coleman for Senate offices, but it must be something pretty potent.

In response to questions arising after Norm Coleman’s latest Senate TV ad (see below), the Coleman campaign put up a post on their blog that’s linked to on the frontpage of the Coleman for Senate website. The blog post is odd to begin with, taking a crack at what I can only imagine is supposed to be humor and failing miserably:

Amazingly, there seems to be a real conspiracy in the making based on a video that has been found from the Franken archives!

We have released a portion of an Al Franken web video that we find suspect. There is this guy we showed the Franken video to and he said it was “obviously faked.” Another man, who has seen several movies, told us that, “Franken’s mouth doesn’t even move throughout the entire production. This is totally fake. He should drop out now to save himself embarrassment.”

But the oddest part of the whole thing is this YouTube video they posted as a mockery of their own TV ad. Now, remember, this is posted by Norm Coleman’s official Senate campaign, on their official campaign website…

Let’s take a step back here. Forget the green-screening, forget the ad, just think about this: this guy is a sitting United States Senator. Say all you will about Al Franken’s past, but neither he nor his campaign has even approached this level of absurdity. Also, to all the people who have donated to the Coleman for Senate campaign, take note of what your money is paying for.

Honestly, I just feel bad for them; they’re really embarrassing themselves over there… But also, this is just hilariously bizarre. I really hope they keep up the good work over there, it’ll make blogging easy.

UPDATE: This is even more weird considering that this would have all been water under the bridge considering the campaign responded very responsibly by providing outtakes to the commercial. Why then would they reopen the whole thing with this absurdly weird video?

  • Far from actual funny… but I don’t have a problem with it. It is a bit odd on the one hand to insist the Republican candidate is a serious person who wants to “cross the aisle” and then put this on the front page of the Coleman website. Seems to me that some lower level Republican frat boy took a basic computer graphics class, had a friend who thought he could imitate Al Franken and we thus get a “Gomer Pyle” version of satire. It is more stupid preaching to the choir and certainly sticks it to local entrepreneurs for developing Caribou Coffee. (WHich is odd cause I thought Republicans respected business.)

Now a question for my Republican friends, if Al Franken had something like this on his website would you be complaining about “Angry Al”? Or would you be counting female roles?

     G!

“Team Little Markie Kennedy” is back in the saddle again!!!

  • I’m from St. Paul. Norm was one of the great mayors. Very approachable. Franken IS a carpetbagger. The video makes that point well but in a fun way.
Franken can try anything he wants. Let’s see it.
    “this is just hilariously bizarre”
Do you mean “this is just hiLARious!!!”
Great satire on the part of the Coleman campaign!
    I tip my hat!

  • If the Coleman campaign keeps spending their money like this it looks like this race will be a lot easier for Franken than I thought.

  • That is the stupidest goddamn thing I’ve ever seen. I laughed for five minutes when I saw that it was paid for by the Coleman campaign.

    What a disaster for Norm.

  • Norm Coleman should be demanding the immediate resignation of the staffers who thought it would be a good idea to waste their donors’ money on this travesty. And that leaves out the fact that it’s a sarcastic, personal attack against people (read: us) who have no working relationship with the Franken campaign whatsoever.

    Ridiculous.

  • Zach (the other one)

Petty, weak, uninformed, and boring. Represents Norm and the right wing well. Like i said before, I just hope they keep up with this strategy. I think they are pandering to that ever dwindling radical base, forgetting all the semi level headed people they tricked into voting for Norm last time. And all those said people will see this! I hope they run that one on TV right around 10 o clock news time. It is nice to see how blatant the Coleman campaign can be in their insistent assumption that MN voters are stupid and ignorant of reality. They must think this will be an easy fight for them. I hope they keep thinking that! But if this is the opposition, it’s gonna be easier than I thought. Also, have you guys seen the amount of racism on our news stations the last few days? This is going to be a very interesting and ugly campaign season. We have to figure out a way to bet on how low they go. But given the realities we are living in, it’s especially not going to work this year. I just hope that this is the kind of campaign other Republicans launch, this is going to be a landslide! Maybe they have forgotten that it is not 2000, or 2002? All I can say is keep it up guys!

  • You guys need to get out of your parent’s basement and get a life. It’s Minnesota. Go enjoy the weather. Save the politics for after labor day.

  • Wow, stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. This is going to be one hell of an election cycle.

  • @ sad

I am a nearly 40 year old married father and nurse. I donate time and money to further the progressive cause. We own a house and two cars (and two cats and a dog)

If you didn’t notice, we just ended the most historic presidential primary of all times, and are heading into what is likely to be the most earth shaking presidential election of my lifetime.

    Kindly piss up a rope.

  • They’re acting like bad poker players caught in a bluff — go over-the-top with the trash talk.

  • Wow. Talk about a candidate that can’t laugh at himself.

  • Now we see the real damage that Angry Al has done to “satire”. To moonbats, if it doesn’t include childhood beastiality, rape, assault or something else to put people off their food, it must be taken at face value. Yet another gift from the lunatic left to the world.

Jonathan Swift is turning 200 RPM’s in his grave right now.

  • Pretty straightforward. Franken supporters — like, well, you — made an absurd suggestion that Mrs. Coleman had been greenscreened into the Coleman ad; the Coleman campaign made fun of it, him, and you … and had some fun fingerpointing and jeering at Franken’s carpetbagging, all at the same time.

I’m surprised that Franken supporters, of all folks, don’t understand a joke. You are, Coupling not left out of it — you’re the butt.

  • Funny republicans are still trying to paint dems as elitists. Fortunately for us, McCain is known to own six mansions. Real down to earth guy there. Oh, and the enormous kitchen with granite countertop the Colemans are conversing in is real down home too.

Actually Jamie, I’m sure that Al is laughing at that ad this very minute. Though, probably laughing at what the ad is attempting to do.

I actually think the ad was a good attempt, but poorly done. The idea was there, it just didn’t come together in the end to create anything that would really resonate.

Swiftee, could you send me the quotes from these many jokes about childhood beastiality, rape and assault you keep bringing up? I just haven’t actually seen them, and I’m wondering where I can find them. Thanks! Maybe you can convert this moonbat!

  • @ Danno

“Funny republicans are still trying to paint dems as elitists. Fortunately for us, McCain is known to own six mansions. ”

Actually, they’re all his wife’s name.

Don’t hold your breath. Here…I’ll fill in.

Why do you spit on troops and hate America?
