Ashwin Madia is a former Marine Corps attorney and has focused on protecting civil liberties since the early days of his
campaign. Its not surprising, then, that Madia opposes the FISA compromise that passed the House.
I am troubled by the House passage of HR 6304, the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. There is much we can do to prevent terrorism, but such measures do not require the sacrifice of fundamental constitutional freedoms which our country was founded upon. This legislation demonstrates the need for leaders in Congress who have experience in the military and in Iraq, and who value the rule of law as we fight the War on Terror.
Madia is very passionate about civil liberties, it was one of the very first issues he brought up the first time I talked to him some nine months ago. Just more evidence that he’ll be a rock star in Congress.

“fundamental constitutional freedoms” … such as?
As for being a rock star in Congress, haha. He’ll never be Sensenbrenner or the like if he can win the vacated seat. HR 6304 was opposed by 128 Congressmen. How many of those, simply by holding the position, are “rock stars?” Zero, I’d allege.
I was surprised at the support of this amendment by some democratic leaders in congress and am glad that Madia has issued the statement he did. His position on FISA and protecting the freedoms this country has stood for was one of the main reasons I decided to support him.
The “War on terror” is not an excuse to undercut those basic freedoms and he’s right, we need representatives in congress that can stand up for and protect those rights and be an example of a true patriot. Madia is such a candidate and has the experience and intelligence and, frankly, guts to do it.
The only freedoms you were worried about are for the terrorists. When
basically half the Democrats vote for it and he doesn’t want to join.
The DFL want terrorists to get rights. Wow! At least this will help
Madia lose.
Walter Hanson
Minneapolis, MN
walter hanson I agree 100%,
They are guilty before being proven innocent. That is the American way.
It is the ONLY way we can stay safe from terrorists. The ONLY way.
Anyone who thinks there might be another way to fight terrorism is wrong.
Iraq is the central front on the war on terror.
We are fighting them over there, so we don’t have to here.
This is a different kind of war.
The constitution is just a piece of paper.
The Republican party will have a permanent majority.
Great Job!
Actually Walter Hanson, if you did some research, you would see that many of those Democrats have been against this legislation and said they would not support legislation that gave retroactive immunity, and many are just such flaming liberals, there is no way they agreed with this crap. Nancy Boyda and Steny Hoyer have both come out against retroactive immunity and said they dont agree with this bill. Pelosi and Stoyer just have absolutely no spine when it comes to standing up the Bush administration, they just dont want to rock the boat too much because they are almost home free. This bill was seen as a compromise and as bipartisan and was supported by the Democratic leadership (Pelosi, Hoyer, Clyburn, and Emanuel). Basically, all these Dems caved and many do not support this bullshit. I really doubt liberals like Pelosi or Castor would ever support this crap if it came if Obama were president.
I’m really sick of ridiculous, stupid, empty Republican talking points and I really find it embarrassing that you are ignorant enough to use them. How brain washed are you? Yes, the DFL wants to appease terrorists and let them come to America and kill all of us, yup sounds beautiful. Look, if you think me wanting to protect my rights, to stop phone companies from ILLEGALLY giving my information to the most corrupt Administration in the history of this country (Bush=oil, Cheney=defense contracting, wtf, how were people so stupid to ever vote for them) and overruling a right GUARANTEED TO ME BY THE UNITED STATE CONSTITUTION, if you really think that is me appeasing terrorists then, well, I’m speechless because it the dumbest bunch of crap I have ever heard in my entire life. Honestly, what the hell is wrong with you? Where do you see appeasing terrorists and giving them rights in there? Please, point it out. I’d love to see where.
And you know what is the really sad part, is your position on this issue. Yes, allow corporations to ILLEGALY access our PERSONAL information and give it to the current Administration and not get sent to court for it. That is so un-American and even more particularly, so un-Republican when you think about the ideology. Are you that big of a tool that you would give up your ideology and Republican beliefs so that Bush can get away with ILLEGALY obtaining your personal information. Brain washed, all of you, simply brain washed.
I just dont get what is with Republicans wanting to keep screwing with the Constitution. Gay marriage because you guys are a bunch of homophobic religious zealots who have nothing better to do than to interfere in people’s personal lives (again, EXTREMELY un-Republican ideology, way to go tools, and all of your rhetoric for that is even more bullshit than the crap you stated here), bypassing the Constitution’s given rights on being heard before a court for crimes charged with so that we can keep a bunch of Middle Eastern guys in jails, especially when it was estimated that like 75% are innocent (don’t quote me on that though, I think that is what I read) for god knows why, to knowingly overrule the Constitution yet again on hearing criminals in courts by granting them immunity when Bush simply could’ve waited the one or two days to have the court okay all of this. And you know what, don’t give me any of this, well sometimes that one to two days will do us in, you know what, if we wouldn’t find out about some terrorists attacks until one or two days until it happened then that is a serious problem within our Pentagon, CIA, Presidential Administration etc. Let’s focus on that problem instead.
Republicans should just burn the constitution, piss on the ashes and start governing from the Bible because that is what they’ve been trying to do since and they don’t have much time left to do it. (McCain is getting his ass kicked, sorry, it’s going to hurt.) Or I guess that just represents the tools of the Republican party, true Republicans would use a Grover Norquist book. Republican ideology is so inconsistent because you guys adopted the religious right, it allowed you to win but you simply can’t appease both sides, unless you brainwash them, which seeing as the religious right are a bunch of idiots blindly running toward faith and the Bible which has been proven to be inconsistent and translated poorly resulting in varying interpretations numerous times, well it was as easy as that.
(I’ve had a great week so I’m just calling bitches out. I’m sick of these stupid Minnesota Republicans being ass holes to us and using stupid Republican talking points.)
“a right GUARANTEED TO ME BY THE UNITED STATE CONSTITUTION” .. what right are you talking about?
As for McCain, latest polls have the race tied at 45-45, so I’m not sure how you can say with any certainty that McCain will lose.
Sean2, I agree 100%,
What is the link to those poll numbers that have the race “tied at 45-45”?
Was that a National poll, or a local one?
If you posted a link to that info, then moonbats would be easier to take down.
Great Job!
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
That would be the 4th amendment Sean2. And the issue with FISA, is the whole warrants thing.
FriWig, I AGREE 100% that the “constitution is just a piece of paper.”
That’s why I think all guns should be outlawed, the NRA abolished, no person who has ever voted Republican can own or operate a newspaper or tv station, and all blogs should be screened so only liberal views are published.
And forget elections. Much easier and cheaper if each democratic president just selects his/her successor. Neat, Tidy, Peaceful.
