There are a couple of articles covering Obama’s visit to the St. Paul restaurant this morning, but I thought I’d pass along the pool report…
We went to the Copper Dome Restaurant in St. Paul, Minnesota, a kind of kitchy diner here. He spent more than 30 minutes there, going table-by table to greet people. When we walked in, there were more than two dozen people here. He was not wearing a jacket and had the sleeves of his white shirt rolled up. Lots of framed flour sacks.
After shaking a few hands, a server came up to him and asked if he wanted to order anything. The candidate said he had to take his order to go and asked a couple he was talking to about about he should order. They suggested pancakes and the server reeled off a long list of different kinds of pancakes he could order, but Obama said “I’m kind of a traditionalist” and said he would just have buttermilk pancakes. He asked Sam Tubmam if she wanted pancakes and she said no, and then if any staffers wanted pancakes and they all passed. “I guess it’s just me,” he said
Another couple were baseball fans and asked him if was for the Twins or the White Sox. “If you think I’m going to throw my White Sox under the bus because I’m here in Minnesota, that’s not going to happen,” he said.
One of the men at the table asked about H1-B visas that I couldn’t exactly hear. Obama said “it’s not supposed to be based on you saving money on salaries,” implying that companies shouldn’t just bring in people from other countries because they might be younger or cheaper.
He met a man who was with this two sons having breakfast. At some point, they noted it was the birthday of the mother/wife who was not there. Obama asked if they were “plotting some things” at breakfast. He suggested as a gift “something homemade, they always like that.”
Heading toward the door, he met a woman with three children. He asked her four-year-old what he had been doing all summer, and he responded, “watching you on tv,” to which the candidate didn’t really didn’t respond. Even closer to the door, he headed to the table of a family that included a high school senior ,and Obama encouraged him he told all of his “crew” to vote for him.
He headed to the counter, paid $3 in cash for pancakes and walked out to loud cheers.

Love that place. What a great neighborhood.
That’s solid, principled politics right there. Never stop rooting for the home team, Barack.
I’m going to vote for McCain but I get impression that Obama is a decent guy who would do a good job as President. I think we’ll learn a lot about him with his pick for VP.
