I’ve spoken to several Republicans tonight who tell me that internal Republican polling has Michele Bachmann with just a five point lead over El Tinklenberg, her DFL challenger. Not just this, but her trendlines are horrible and she’s below the magic 50% threshold that denotes an incumbent in danger.
I’m also told that the MN GOP is diverting resources into the 6th CD in an effort to save Bachmann. This comes at the expense of Brian Davis down in CD 1 (who, one Republican told me, has been “left for dead”) and Erik Paulsen in CD 3. The state party will still be helping Paulsen, but their commitment will not be as large as once expected due to Bachmann’s troubles.
One Republican told me “this is way worse than 2006.”

In 2006, the State Party diverted resources from other campaigns to Bachmann in the final weeks of the election. They should let Bachmann swing in the wind, and help Paulsen.
Great news! Take it to her, El!
Oh, c’mon, Eva - what would you creative folk at Dump Michele Bachmann do with all your spare time, if the batsh*tcrazywoman wasn’t around anymore?
If I had to choose one GOP Rep to survive this election (I’m rooting hard for El)….. I’d take Bachmann. She’s a gift that keeps giving. She’s becoming the face of the state party in congress. I can’t believe that Kline, Paulson, and Coleman haven’t thrown her under the bus. One potential disadvantage of a Franken victory would be him providing bulletin board material and being source of unity for the other guys.
Bachmann doesn’t fit that district at all. I’d argue that from my vantage point, Ellison is an illogical extremist. But at least he fits his district.
I’d love to get Tinklenberg in. Unlike Bachmann, he is moderate. And unlike other Democratic candidates for Congress this year, he is a proven entity and we all know exactly what we’re going to get.
“Bachmann doesn’t fit that district at all”? You obviously haven’t been exposed to Big Lake (Mark Olson!), Becker, South Haven, and Stearns County.
Eva - Surely you jest! How could you even wish that the party help Paulsen? CD3’rs are helping Tinklenberg as much as possible. We’d like reciprocity.
Big Lake, Becker, South Haven, Stearns County? You don’t have to go that far into the boonies to find her core wingnut supporters. A trip to Blaine or Coon Rapids will do. There are plenty of slack-jawed rednecks in Anoka County.
According to the most up to date monitor of American culture, “The Simpsons” the correct usage is “Slack-Jawed Yokel”, ie: Cletus, Brandeen and the younguns’.
Before anyone makes more rednecks comments, you might want to know that the DFL last month opened a campaign office in Princeton and had a bunch of volunteers for the one canvass I heard about. That’s about the northern edge of the 6th. Perhaps those of you wondering about how Bachmann could have a chance of winning should start looking around the suburbs. That’s about all the Republicans have left, and clearly even the suburbs aren’t that safe anymore.
“Ellison is an illogical extremist”
Projection is ugly, DtM. You should try to avoid that.
