Balancing the budget, oversight of the financial markets, Madia’s integrity and bringing our troops home are the themes. What are Paulsen’s themes? Scare tactics: being dishonest about about tax policy, creating media-friendly lawn sign stories, turning his Wikipedia page into an advertisement, distracting from his record and trying to put artificial labels on his opponent.
Will Paulsen be able to step up to Madia’s level and create an ad that can win on issues? I’m guessing not.

Just another POSITIVE ad from the candidate that talks to the voters about issues, concerns, and solutions to the real problems facing our Country, Ashwin Madia. Hohum, he hits another homerun with this ad…he’s all about discipline and teamwork, the trademark of the entire campaign Paulsen has no choice but to stay on the slimey slope he has chosen and continue with his negative, issue LIGHT campaign. It kind of makes one wonder what exactly Target pays him to do? The continuing question about Paulsen is “Where’s Waldo?” As for Ashwin Madia, he’s at another meeting with a different group of voters in the 3rd, and tomorrow another, etc., etc., etc. It looks to me that Wikipedia should have Madia’s picture next to the work…Congressional
Yep, this is how coordination with the DCCC works. You run positive ads yourself and claim that you are running nothing but a positive campaign, and then the DCCC and its union bitches beat the shit out of your opponent with lie after lie after lie. Coordination at its best, approved by Ashwin Madia.
By the way, did you know Madia was in the Marines?
great ad.
Very powerful ad…..Wow!
So does military service make one more qualified to represent us in Washington?
Because when it comes to McCain vs. Obama, you all are very quicky to discount it and say “it is to be respected but not a reason to vote for him.”
But when it comes to Paulsen vs. Madia, you say it is a big reason we should vote for him?
Which one is it?
Gee DtM: Did Madia, or anybody on this blog suggest that military service makes one more qualified to represent us in washington?
I believe you’ve just served up a strawman with red herring sauce.
The 3rd district should elect Ashwin Madia, then reelect him over and over again. He’s the future. A franchise player.
Hey, I don’t think there is anything wrong with it (and yes, I think that a 30-second spot whose only visual for the entire 30-seconds is a Marine backdrop is relying on a viewer to react to the military experience).
I’ve been saying all along that Madia’s service as a Marine counts for something. I’m just saying that so many of you are adamant that it doesn’t qualify McCain to be President. Double standard.
It obviously has qualified Kline to serve the 2nd. It’s not a double standard. It’s a qualification - not the only one. I don’t discount McCain’s service. I just question his positions on every issue of importance to me personally. Madia has it all - education, experience in the US Marines and positions I agree with.
Dan:
That YOU believe that Madia’s experience qualifies him to hold office, while “we” don’t believe McCain’s experience qualifies him is NOT a double standard. It is a difference of opinion.
So Madia’s and Sarvi’s military service should be off the table when making the decision on whom to vote for?
Nearly all voters agree - military service is one positive qualification in those running for office. Candidates (mccain) can rely too much on their service as qualification. Today’s quote/link to ignore:
“the McCain campaign has raised his military service in efforts to defuse political attacks, even when it seemed to have little if any bearing on the issue at hand…..
….. the issue isn’t the McCain campaign’s use of biography per se, but rather how and when they bring it up. By turning to his POW experience in order to deflect any question, be it about his character, wealth or memory, McCain appears to risk trivializing his own heroic personal story in much the same way that Rudy Giuliani’s constant invoking of 9/11 became the butt of jokes during his presidential campaign.”

Even as a peacenik I like the message, including military backdrop, of Madia’s ad. It’s made the most positive impression on me of anything I’ve seen on him so far.
Damn, you’re dense, DtM.
DtM
“So Madia’s and Sarvi’s military service should be off the table when making the decision on whom to vote for?”
No. In my opinion, it should be just another qualification to consider. When considering McCain’s military experience, I note that he had a lack of leadership experience, graduated third from the bottom of his class, and destroyed five planes. Hardly a record that qualifies anybody to lead the nation. Sarvi and Madia’s records are a wash, in my opinion and neither pull toward qualification nor disqualification for the positions they are seeking…aside from the fact that they know a little about war, and as members of CONGRESS will be in the position to authorize war.
So here is my opinion:
Military service shows a candidates willingness to sacrifice and give back to country and community. Sometimes, if you are in a position of authority, it can show leadership as well.
The difference between our candidates and McCain is that our candidates will support veterans in both word and deed. McCain seems to support them in word only.
McCain has a poor rating from Disabled American Vets, Iraq and Afghanistan Vets, Vietnam Vets of America, and was on the opposite side of the VFW and American Legion on the GI Bill issue.
So, our candidates and McCain have shown they can sacrifice for country when so few others will, but ours are continuing to support the troops and McCain does not.
Thanks,
Alec
Madia actually was working with the U.S. military, the U.S. State Department, UN organizations and NGOs who were attempting to set up a judicial system in Iraq. I think that this part of his service in the Marines has given him government experience which John McCain’s “combat only” service did not do. I also think this is very relevant because we are currently in Iraq not Viet Nam!
You guys can rationalize anything. You should re-read your own comments. What a double standard!!! It is laughable.
DTM — I do not support John McCain for office because I am the spouse of a Veteran, and McCain does not support Veteran’s issues.
My husband would tell you that McCain lost his support when he refused to label water boarding as torture, and as chair of the Commerce Committee, he has repeatedly labeled striking or those threatening to strike union members unpatriotic.
He consistently voted against Veteran’s health care, education, troop deployment and under budgeted Veteran Hospitals. Mcain’s record, and touting himself as a “war hero and veteran who survived capture” — his track record shows no respect for other military members and Veterans. Show me one place where he was a champion for Veterans.
Ashwin Madia, on the other hand, speaks about Veterans and Veteran issues. I believe him when he says he will champion their cause. Both he and Al Franken have the endorsements of Veteran’s groups, and McCain does not.
I hope I have explained it for you. It is not enough to SAY that you support Veterans. You must do it!
If you want to read a very complete record of John McCain’s lack of support for Veterans —

This is why many Veterans will not support McCain, but are willing to vote for Madia and Franken. We have already been let down by McCain, and are willing to give new voices a chance to take care of us.
Teamwork and discipling…that is the point of the ad, and the Marines are a great visual to get that through to the viewers…that is what is missing in Congress, and that is what Madia will bring to Washington and hopefully others will learn from him. Unfortunately for folks like dtm, you haven’t been privileged to see the type of leadership, vision, teamwork, and especially discipline that Ashwin Madia has shown to campaign staff and volunteers for the last 11 1/2 months. Like all of Ash’s ads, this is totally positive. By the way, dump the coordination b.s. because it’s a total lie and just a another cheap Republican trick to take the voters sight off the real issues…and whose NOT talking about them..Erik Paulsen! Don’t complain about outside groups running ads against Erik…if he wasn’t running such a putrid campaign maybe the RNC wouldn’t have pulled their support…that is certainly not Madia’s fault. By the way, Erik must really be hurting for supporters because I just saw 8 large Paulsen signs on the same homeowner’s lot….maybe if more people believed in him, he could spread his name out a little more. Then there’s another large Paulsen sign erected on a Madia supporter’s property without his consent on 494 just south of 394…right next to a large Madia sign…..take it down, Michael.
I have like all of Madia’s ads. Not this one. Just a little too contrived for my taste.
