If that wasn’t enough, word has gotten out that the DCCC will be spending $1 million on ads targeting Bachmann starting tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the national media is still watching Bachmann (and making some less than flattering comparisons too). From the Washington Post:
The ghost of Mike Pappas may be coming back to haunt Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.).
In 1998, Pappas, then a freshman Republican congressman from New Jersey, was cruising to reelection when he took to the House floor to read an homage to independent counsel Kenneth Starr set to the tune of the children’s classic “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Um, not smart. The song caused a national fervor and led directly to Pappas’s defeat at the hands of five-time “Jeopardy” champion Rush Holt.
Bachmann could be headed down that same ignominious path after comments she made on MSNBC last week in which she expressed concern that Barack Obama holds “anti-American” views.
The remark, which quickly drew national attention, has re-invigorated Democratic candidate Elwyn Tinklenberg (awesome name!), who has raised more than $600,000 since Bachmann’s appearance Friday on “Hardball.”
As I reported last week, Republicans were nervous about Bachmann’s chances even before her HUAAC gaffe. Since that time, things have only gotten worse. It is not exaggeration to say that Minnesota Republicans are very, very scared right now.
With Bachmann in danger, Coleman behind in the polls and resources being diverted from Paulsen’s effort in the 3rd, Minnesota Republicans are being forced to come to terms with the notion that there may be just one Republican representing Minnesota in the Congress next January. That would be a stunning turn. In our state’s 150 year history, there has only been 11 months when Minnesota had less than two Republicans serving in Congress. That would be the first 11 months of our state’s history, when both of our Senator’s and both of our Congressmen were Democrats. In the 1858 election, three Republicans were elected (one Senator and both Congressmen) and we’ve had at least two ever since. Here’s hoping that streak comes to and end in 15 days!

First Olson keeps the party’s endorsement, now Bachmann shoots herself in the foot. Whatever became of the lock step GOP I grew up seeing?
They keep playing this sound bite on MPR news with Michelle claiming her words were misconstrued. We all saw the video, good luck with that line Michelle!! Those words represent your views, ideas, and actions perfectly. Pretty hard to misconstrue that video. Perhaps she should rewatch it?
I’m with you Zach, and the host made me do it defense isn’t cutting it either. It’s not like the show’s called “Happy Cuddly Soft Fun Time with Chris Matthews”. If she can’t take the heat, she should get out of the 24 hour news kitchen.
I’ve seen comments taken out of context. It happense alot. It happened with McCain’s 100 year war comment.
This was not taken out of context. Yes, Matthews coaxed here, but this is national politics and cable news. Plus, every time Matthews coaxed her to take it further, she had every opportunity to pivot and reframe the discussion. All it would have taken was something like:
“OK, Chris, you’ve taken one comment I made and turned it into the idea of an inquisition on all of Congress. My point is that we should be able to expect a President who does not have these troubling ties.”
But she didn’t. I’m amazed she didn’t have an internal filter saying “time to shift gears.” Bachmann, however, isn’t known for her internal filter.
Hey publius, what’s this I just heard about a Republican Write in entering the race?
My point is that we should be able to expect a President who does not have these troubling ties.”
The problem with that statement is that there are no “troubling ties”. It’s a very Goebbels like tactic to keep bringing it up. But then Michele isn’t know for her tolerance of untruths. In fact, she’s more well known as a fascist with only a casual relationship with facts.
Zach, I heard that on MPR at around 0820 today. Bachmann’s primary challenger is re-vitalizing his/her campaign as a write in. I can’t recall the candidate’s name, sorry.
Zach,
Bachmann’s primary opponent, Aubrey Immelman, a professor of psychology at St. John’s University and the College of St. Benedict and military consultant has announced he will mount a write-in campaign. He won a little over 3,000 votes or 14% in the primary. This is his website:
http://www.immelman.us/
I understand there is an independent write in, Bob Anderson, as well.
Looks like they’re lining up to help take her down.
I heard this morning that Tinklenberg took in over a million. And counting.
Have John Kline, Erik Paulsen, Norm Coleman, and Brian Davis come out with statements condemming Michele Bachmann’s divisive words???
If they haven’t, then their silence is deafening beyond measure.
The people who need to be concerned with Bachmann are her constituents. In the end, nobody else’s opinion really matters.
And if “divisive words” are the standard for coming out with a statement on something, we’ll barely be able to get all the statements completed between now and election day, from each party.
Do you really think that not holding a news conference means that they are silently agreeing with Bachmann? Is that what you are implying?
By not making a statement that Bachmann’s choice of words are of divisiveness and McCarthyism, their silence could possibly be viewed as that of agreement with Bachmann.
And where were Tim Walz and Betty McCollum during the Wright scandal?
I’m just saying, the only opinions that matter are the voters in the 6th. I’ve been saying for months that Bachmann would be beaten, and now I think that more than ever.
“Wright Scandal”?
What scandal is that, DtM?
Is it a real scandal, or one made up by rightwing nutjobs?
“Is it a real scandal, or one made up by rightwing nutjobs?”
The second one.
