Is Someone At the Star Tribune Collaborating With Norm Coleman?

The Minnesota GOP just had a press conference to ask some questions about conflicting information regarding the Star Tribune and these magic envelopes. Why didn’t the DFL and the MN GOP have a joint press conference on this one? I think we’re all asking these questions.

First, the reporters on the Star Tribune story never saw those documents:

“Nobody sent an anonymous package to me[, Paul McEnroe] or Tony [Kennedy]. And Tony and I have never talked to anyone in the Coleman campaign about where we get our information. We have no idea what he based that statement on. If he cares to share it, we’d love to hear from him about it.”

So how can Norm Coleman keep repeating the line that Star Tribune had “envelopes” containing the allegations of money funneling when the reporters don’t even know about them? Who at the Star Tribune has these envelopes and informed Team Coleman about them but didn’t inform the reporters on the story?

Also, the MNGOP is trying to say that the DSCC and the Star Tribune were collaborating too! This is nothing short of hilarious. In fact, the Star Tribune condemns the use of their reporters in the DSCC piece.

The real question here: why were those reporters yelling out the story in front of all the rolling cameras from the media (as well as trackers)? They basically gave their story to the world right there! Why would these journalists do it? Did they think their own paper wasn’t going to run the story and needed to tell the world about it?

Keep in mind, this is a story that has been worked on, not just by the Star Tribune but by many for a long time. Even Norm Coleman admits this story’s being worked on as early as October 10th.

I’m curious why there’s this whole Star Tribune envelope story, especially because Coleman uses it in his attack ad. That sounds a bit like collaboration to me.

More than anything else, this is a complete distraction from the actual allegations.

  • Short answer: it sure looks that way, doesn’t it? One of the most distressing things about his whole turn of affairs is how the Strib seems to have sabotaged its own reporters’ work. It reminds me an episdode of The Wire — the corruption at all levels.
