Pandemic alert upgraded again

MSNBC:

Global health authorities warned Wednesday that swine flu was threatening to bloom into a pandemic, and the virus spread farther in Europe even as the outbreak appeared to stabilize at its epicenter. A toddler who succumbed in Texas became the first death outside Mexico.

WHO Director General Margaret Chan declared the phase 5 alert after consulting with flu experts from around the world.

I’d just like to add that this is turning into pretty much the worst year ever. First a massive recession, then swine flue, and the year”s only one-third over? For crying out loud, is it 2010 yet?

  • Any chance at perspective? It is awesome that our government is doing two things that it hasn’t done in 8 years: Acting pro-actively just in case of catastrophe, and acting in concert with world organizations and other countries. This bodes well. Also, 7 deaths world wide. What re there, 6 billion people in the world? Seriously.

    • Wrong. Much of the stockpiled antiviral drugs we currently have in this country are because of direct action taken by Bush after the avian flu outbreak to ready the U.S. for a pandemic. Obama even mentioned this last night at his press conference.

  • I stand corrected. We are doing three things we haven’t done in the last 8 years, the third being graciously giving credit to a political opponent where credit is due.

  • Pandemic and Panic come from the same word. We should not freak out! Apply common sense, eat and sleep well, wash hands, use plenty of Purell and get yourself a Breath of Life Mask from Technon. That’s a full face mask that will cover your eyes too when out in public places. The half face masks we see on the TV don’t really protect you 100%. Check out http://ProactiveAndPrepared.com
