Obama still doesn’t own the economy

Here’s another interesting bit from the NY Times / CBS News poll:

20. Who do you think is mostly to blame for the current state of the nation’s economy — 1. the Bush administration, 2. the Obama administration, 3. Wall Street and financial institutions, 4. Congress, or 5. someone else?

I’ve been asking for months when Obama would own the economy. The number still overwhelmingly show that Americans don’t blame the Obama administration for the state of the economy. It’s now been a lot longer than I would have expected, and only 4 percent of those surveyed blame Obama for the economic crisis.

Of course, this is just one poll, and it’s at odds with a Rasmussen poll I wrote about a month ago. It’s interesting, though, that when combined with the poll’s findings on health reform, it seems Americans are still willing to give the Democrats the benefit of the doubt.

  • Sure, sure, sure! The NY Times/CBS poll is where I always go when I want an unbiased measurement. We all know that as long as the economy is down, it will be the Bush economy. But, when it improves, it will be the Obama economy. What a great gig! By the way, the 1% rise in GDP that Obama was touting today is not accurate. It includes government expenditures. Without those numbers, the economy contracted by about the same margin.

Jeff — You wrote the following 4 months ago after they passed the budget. Have you changed your mind?

“The Democratic party will now be held completely responsible for the success or failure of their agenda. Since the Democrats hold both the presidency and both houses of Congress, they must take full responsibility for the impact of their plans, and they need to ensure the plans are successful.”

  • Cman get used to it. I just had 8 years of blaming Clinton or Democrats in Congress for every economic problem during the Bush Administration… well goose, meet gander. And even stranger, that is the truth, George Bush fucked up the domestic economy so bad that it will take at least 16 years of Democratic Presidents before you fools are let anywhere near the White House. Enjoy your Southern run Rump political party… say how’s Rush doing?

    • Ideologic delusions! You should see a doctor. Rush is fine. Still one of the smartest men in the country. Too bad there’s no one on your side that can compare.

      • Ahahahaha. You MUST be a uber-smart liberal doing a parody of dip-shitism.

On a more serious note….it takes a long time to turn around the worst recession in any of our lifetimes.

  • “On a more serious note….it takes a long time to turn around the worst recession in any of our lifetimes.”

Agreed. And because we are setting policy that is exactly opposite of what we should be doing, it will take a lot longer.

    • That there is OPINION, sport. I think I’ll give Obama and his team the benefit of the doubt. You, not so much, clown.

      • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

      • That’s fine pally. The fact is, we (not I) elected a rookie with no experience (other than he’s a cool dude) and it shows. I also understand your reputations are on the line because of the celebrity star power love affair all you liberals swallowed hook, line, and sinker. Kind a hard to go back now. I share your frustration.

  • He may not own the recession.

But he owns the $800 million stimulus. Let’s see that money not go to waste.

And having our government spend $2 billion on buying freaking used cars so they can CRUSH THEM? Good god. Cash for clunkers. Might as well call it tax money into the toilet. This is the worst program I’ve heard of in a long time. I’m ashamed that my government would think it is a good use of tax money.

    1. Why is it good for the taxpayer to have him/her purchase a car and then crush it like a pancake (the residual scrap value of a car is about $75)
    2. Why is it good for the average Joe to be encourage buy our government to take out a loan on a new car which will depreciate rapidly during the first two years?

This will benefit Detroit, and Detroit’s labor unions. And it will hurt absolutely everyone else in America. Pathetic.

I don’t get fired up about alot of policies. But this one is totally incompetent.

    • C’mon DtM. They’re desperate to show life in the economy. Plus they own 2 of the big 3. The housing problem that started this whole mess is still in trouble. How about a Dollars for Dumps program? Also, as I stated in a previous post, Obama was stretching the truth about the GDP growth. Most all of his policies are anti growth and I’m afraid any REAL recovery is way out there. Just wait until the Bush tax cuts sunset. Healthcare and Cap and Tax? Guess what folks. We’re up to our eyeballs in debt. We have no money! Wake up everyone!

      • Maybe you are right. I just know that for most policy decisions, I may feel one way, even strongly one way, but I typically have the humility to acknowledge that I’m not omnicient and maybe, just maybe, the other guy’s way will work.

With cash for clunkers, though, I can’t find anything good. I’ve tried, but I can’t. It is just a stupid, irresponsible policy by our government, making the taxpayer cough up $3 billion for something that is an absolutely and total waste of money.

Someone — please — defend cash for clunkers. Enlighten me. Your Democratic congress pushed it through, so somewhere there is an attempt to justify it.

  • I would advise Democrat candidates to go out door knocking claiming “The economy is George Bush’s fault”. I’m sure that will do wonders for you in 2010.

  • On a positive note, you and I now own 250,000 clunkers, for which we paid a billion dollars and will promptly crush to smithereens.
