Back off, Bobby Jindal: Pawlenty already tried it

Bobby Jindal is not only pandering to the base, he’s doing so with absolutely no originality. He’s apparently copying Tim Pawlenty’s boneheaded recent move, in which Pawlenty claimed to be cutting state funding for ACORN, even though no such funding exists.

Jindal is stealing Pawlenty’s schtick, even the part where it fails:

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order to keep any state money from going to the controversy-wracked Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has its national headquarters in New Orleans.

According to the state’s Division of Administration, no state agencies have existing contracts with ACORN. [Times-Picayune, via Think Progress]

I have two words for Bobby Jindal: Back off. Our governor was the first to expose himself as a pandering but incompetent suck-up to far-right conservative extremists, and you can’t just waltz in and steal his failure.

  • Man your reading comprehension is lousy. Do me a favor and look up “to keep any state money from going”.

Let’s get to the bottom line here Jeff: Are you in favor of tax payer money going to fund ACORN? If you are not then you should be in full support of blocking taxpayer money from going to any such entity and welcome the precedent it sets.

  • James Traficant is a Democrat.
Lets hope Democrats continue to defend ACORN. Certainly wouldn’t want to be a Democrat incumbent who voted against banning funding from ACORN.

  • Certainly wouldn’t want to be a Democrat incumbent who voted against banning funding from ACORN.

Is that what’s behind the ACORN scandal? Smear an organization and tie Democrats to it? No matter how legitimate the charges are, demonize the organization and smear any hint of support with the same charges. Is that the way GOP’ers govern? Is that all they have left?

    • yeah, the dems have never tried to tie a smeared organization to the republican party (see Halliburton)

Oh wait, its only bad when its bad for the democratic party…

  • Seems that a videotape of employees telling a pimp and a prostitute how to get tax preferences for sneaking in teenage girls for prostitution, may not be a definition of a smear. But if you want to defend them..go for it. Happy to see Democrats lose even more seats.

    • Where in the ACORN bylaws or procedures does it mandate advising customers to break US tax law? Where in the training materials does it specify how to skirt the law when asked by pimps and hos, how to handle their income? You get some chucklehead employee to do something stupid then you broadbrush the entire organization. That’s a definition for smear. How’s about we go into a industry industry office and see what we can get them to do?

  • Patterson Panders Too!! My God it’s a conspiracy of pandering!!! http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/09/18/2009-09-18_gov_paterson_orders_all_new_york_state_contracts_with_acorn_to_be_put_on_hold.html

I wonder if we’ll find out there wasn’t any money going to such a fine upstanding organization so worthy of taxpayer money because of what they stand for, not anything they do.

  • Typical Republicans, attack the least among us. I have no problem with you guys going after government waste if it is even handed, but it is not.

Proof Lloyd, Cman, etc. are huge hypocrites and morally bankrupt:

The crimes of Haliburton/KBR/Blackwater cost this country billions, and you guys didn’t say a thing. Those guys profited off of soldier’s electrocutions and ripping off the taxpayer, and you guys didn’t say boo. Those guys murdered innocents and we paid them and you didn’t say boo.

A group tries to help the poor and homeless, and you go off the deep end when they have some a-holes.

Maybe Acorn is corrupt as you say Lloyd, but you selectively attack the least among us while turning a blind eye to those stealing billions and killing soldiers in their pursuit of war profits.

    • This is about Acorn.

It seems that the only way you can defend Acorn is by talking about anybody but Acorn. Blackwater. Halliburton. Anyone to show how, on a relative scale, these guys might not be as guilty as some other guys.

If that is the best defense you can drum up, chances are there is something here worth investigating.

  • Dear Political Junkies,

Hate to break it to you but this whole deal is one big yawn to most voters. No Democrat on either side of the issue is going to be hurt by this if even anybody remembers it by the next election. No Republican is going to benefit by this issue from anybody but the outrage junkies and angry white guys who already make up the base of that party.

The response now is basically “I’ve worked with idiots like that as well as smart people. It takes a bunch of people to make up any company or an organization. These kinds of things don’t define anything but what the film-makers want you to think. Another budding Michael Moore only on the right wing this time.” The response in three months is going to be “I think I heard of that a while back. What happened?”

    Sincerely,
Somebody who knows when something is being blown out of proportion

    • Ha Ha Ha! The great thing about what’s going on, is every time you marginalize the folks out there, it just helps the movement to get stronger. So, keep on supporting the run away ultra liberal train. We will only benefit from it. I think you guys are a bit worried at what’s coming at you, thus your reaction. Keep up the good work! Everyone can sleep in tomorrow. It’s the same campaign speech you’ve seen a hundred times.

      • Off year elections with Democrats in charge of everything always go well…

        right?

      • Multiple Choice question. Why is Obama doing every Sunday morning news show except Fox News Sunday?

A - Because he’s a cry baby who took his toys and went home?
B - Because Rahmy said so?
C - Because Chris Wallace’s questions couldn’t be answered honestly?
D - Because he only wants to talk to a fraction of the people who watch the Sunday shows?
E - Because that’s all his schedule can fit and he has to rest for Letterman on Monday?

Note: There may be more than one answer.

      • Trick question. Fox News is right-wing propaganda and not a real news organization.

      • Because going on Fox News would be like inviting an atheist to Bible Study. Both pointless and irritating if accepted.

      • Wrong answer! You both fail this quiz.

        Chayanov F
        amuseinc F

      • F. Because Freedom of the Press doesn’t mean the freedom to let FOX News profit from having the honorable Barack Obama on its Sunday News show. Obama needs to maintain the legacy media’s support and ratings are as good as money to them.

Plus this gives him the ability to raise his hand over the chattering class and say “Now. Some on the left would like me to ignore the people at Fox. Some on the Right think I purposefully avoided Fox News out of political spite. Nothing could be further from the truth. Do to a scheduling conflict I was unable to join Chris and the gang. That is why I will be doing five one hour interviews with Chris Wallace.”

He played this trick back during the campaign then delivered a ratings blockbuster by sitting down with O’Reilly. He got way more exposure from hyping anticipation for an already dominant timeslot (Fox News has incredibly good rating compared to any other network) than by spreading himself between the also rans, delivering boilerplate answers and letting them fight over who had the best camera angle.

        It’s brilliant really.

      • Lloyd - A+

Extra credit. Very good. You get a gold star today!

      • CMan: A+ for being an ideologue. F for being a rational person.

        http://www.mncampaignreport.com/diary/4062/fair-balanced-more-like-fake-staged

    • Because Fox News caters to mouth-breathing halfwits who will never be persuaded by anything the President (or any other Democrat) says.

  • First, atheists are always welcome at Bible Studies. Atheists are expecially welcome at Bible Studies. No one will ever be shown more love by a christion (exp. the born againers) than an atheist that makes an effort at understanding christianity. I wonder if you know how much that simple error in understanding has warpoed your worldview.

That being said, CMan’s initial point was spot on. There was a time when your defense to things like ACORN would be attack and destroy the messenger, universally rebuke the offender, change the story before the next news cycle and never speak of it again. The strategy worked so well that it gave you majorities in the house, senate and eventually delivered the white house. The problem is, as soon as you got into power you stopped pretending to care about what people thought. You feel no need to rebuke anything vital to your maintenance of power because your opponents are powerless. You no longer simply attack the messenger, you attack the messengers ilk. What you perhaps fail to realize is that the wider you swing your net of derision the more people you will catch. People may have forgotten three offices and James O’Keefe but they are going to forget being called racist for thinking that what those offices did was wrong and wondering why organizations like that would ever deserve tax payer money in the first place.

I’ve seen it happen on the right and it’s happening in double speed now on the left.

    • Lloyd how cute… you think I’m referring to the Christians. Its’ the atheist who would think it was pointless and irritating. He’s the guy I’m concerned about. Who gives a shit what the Christians think? They have enough violent battles amongst each other to make a lie of any kind of brotherly love they profess. It is quite obvious from history that Christians are neither Christlike nor follow biblical teachings.

You crack me up… you really thought I was thinking about the Christian reaction. I’ll just mention that you are exactly correct that if an atheist comes to Bible study to give up atheism he will be accepted with open arms. Its’ the ones who aren’t repenting that the Christians will murder along with Jews, Buddhists, Animist and any other non Christian religion.

      • That was one of the most hateful posts I’ve read on this site. Do you speak for all the left when you say that Christians are murderers of “Jews, Buddhists, Animist and any other non Christian religion”?

If I were to hold you to your own standards I’d ask the site admin to flag you for hate speach but the more you talk the more you make my point.

“You feel no need to rebuke anything vital to your maintenance of power because your opponents are powerless. You no longer simply attack the messenger, you attack the messengers ilk. What you perhaps fail to realize is that the wider you swing your net of derision the more people you will catch. Do you honestly believe that calling Christians murderers will draw more people to your reasoned and moderate party or are you just providing more fodder to those that think you’re a hateful little crank.

      • Oh get over yourself… I speak for no one but myself. What are you some kind of representative of all Christians or just a commenter on a small blog in the Upper Midwest.

You seem to occasionally read history, are you honestly telling me that the Christian religion for centuries through its’ crusades, conquests and missionary work has not murdered millions? The major sin of these innocents was either worshipping the wrong God or having something in resources the gentle Christians wanted. At least admit the reality of the situation and quit pretending those small pox infested blankets were just another example of Christian charity. Christianity is no more a religion of peace than Islam whether you want to admit it it or not.

Bluntly I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything. Are you? A little mild references to a bloody history of that religion and all of a sudden its’ hate speech… play the victim much? Is it my fault you assumed that the pointless and irritating aspect would be from the Christians? We both are citizens of a country where 70% of the people self identify as Christian.

  • To be an informed citizen, I thought I should check out a bit of Obama’s campaigning interviews this morning. But which one would I record? So many choices, so little time. Should I draw names from a hat? Should I draw straws? I decided on throwing darts and This Week on ABC won.

Now I haven’t seen the whole interview yet, but I did hear the line of questioning on ACORN. Guess what? Obama didn’t know they were getting federal dollars. Really! I wonder if he knew they are slated to get billions from the stimulus bill? No, probably not. And further more, he isn’t spending much time on it because there are more important problems in the world. Bottom line… he wouldn’t support de-funding ACORN when specifically asked. From this I can only say, “YOU LIE!!”

    • So if he’s lying by refusing to support de-funding, then he really supports de-funding? Methinks all your negatives have befuddled you.

Once again, Obama is taking the middle-ground, reasonable approach by suggesting that ACORN be further investigated and a rational decision made about funding them, instead of the knee-jerk reaction from either side to totally de-fund them (from the right) or to ignore this obvious problem they have (from the left). Thank you O - Great Voice of Reason.

      • Ya right. Like he wants to de-fund ACORN. Don’t read what you want from my statement. Do you really think he didn’t know that ACORN receives federal money? He totally wants it to be investigated (tongue in cheek) and for it to eventually die and go away. ACORN is Obama. Obama is ACORN. Do you believe he doesn’t know how this organization runs? This man lies to the camera with a smile. Want another lie to millions of Americans? No way will illegals get services from a public option. Two days later in a speech he says we have to make all of them legal. Was that a truthful. Call me what you want, I still say…YOU LIE!!

  • And I say… YOU LIE!!

Wow, I think you’re on to something. It IS very refreshing to make broad declarations like that with a clear conscience, when, in fact, you have no evidence that supports what you are saying. I wish I could see the world in black and white but unfortunately, for me, it’s a nuanced world with nuanced problems and I don’t know the absolute truth about this issue. That realm of certainty belongs only to radio and tv talk show hosts and their herds of sheep.
