You know you’re in trouble…

…when “victory” is a vote narrowly agreeing to open debate on healthcare. Not to close debate, mind you, and not to pass the bill, but just to bring the bill to the floor at all. Here’s what the NY Times says about the vote:

The 60-to-39 vote, along party lines, clears the way for weeks of rowdy floor proceedings that will begin after Thanksgiving and last through much of December.

So it took all the Democrats’ power to get the bill to a point where a circus-like debate will now ensue, and where the bill may or may not ever pass.

I suppose we can call this a victory for Harry Reid, but let’s hope his subsequent victories are a bit more impressive.

  • If this passes, it will be by the same razor-thin margin. Hoping for a more "impressive" victory is a fool's errand. The only way to a "more impressive" victory is through jettisoning the public option…making it a failure for the American people

  • Yeah…Harry hasn't quite got that whole Chicago politics thing mastered yet.
He almost wasn't able to bribe/strong arm enough of his Senators and buy/coerce sufficient votes to get the job done.

Uh-h-h-h…President Obama? About that new day and new way in Washington you were promising us last year? Your team didn't get the memo.

    • Conservatism 101:
      No, by God!

    • Kathy, isn't this kind of logjam and inaction exactly what your ilk has wanted? Why are you gloating? It's even more unseemly than your "poor me, everyone here is so mean when I voice my opinion" gimmick.

      • It’s a personal goal for me to someday find just the right time
to include the phrase "your ilk” in a comment.

        Would that be okay?

This expression isn’t the exclusive property of lefties, is it?
You know, kind of like “Give Peace a Chance” or “Hopenchange” or
        "Vote Early and Often”.

    • Don't you just hate it Kathy when they play by the rules and do things just like they are supposed to do them? President Bush knew how to handle openness and transparency… he ignored 'em. That's your kind of President Kathy… the man with the opposite King Midas touch… everything Bush touched turned to shit… the domestic economy, both wars… the list goes on for Kathy the sad little Republican troll.

  • Word of the day - again: unhinged

  • I'm glad this made it to the floor for debate. It deserves a good, diverse, involved debate. If and when something is passed, it will be because it was made palatable for more than just a party base (either party). That is the way it is supposed to work.

I've said this before, but when I take my personal beliefs and fears/concerns out of it, and simply be an observer of politics, this whole thing is about as fascinating as it gets.

  • This tells you more about the silly nature of the 60 vote senate than anything else.

  • The institutional structure of the senate gives it way too much power and abiltiy to stop innovation.

  • Feel free, but don't think your smirk is doing a good job at hiding your evasion of the question.

"Don't think" being, of course, an idea that belongs exclusively to conservatives.
