If that weren’t bad enough, Carlson decided to throw some rocks in his glass house, using twitter to publically criticize fellow Republican State Senate candidate Mike Parry for his (nearly identical) twitter troubles. Parry, while a candidate for the State Senate seat vacated by Dick Day, got in some hot water for writing that President Obama was a “Power Hungry Arrogant Black Man” and subsequently scrubbing the tweet (and forty others) from twitter. Carlson responded by tweeting: “Good thing Team Carlson does not condone such behavior on twitter.” Carlson appears to have had second thoughts about this tweet as well, as it also has been removed. Fortunatley, a loyal reader has preserved the tweet for posterity and it is also available after the jump.

And, judging by that tweet, he looks like a birther? That’s nearly as embarrassing.
I retweeted a comment encouraging President Obama to “take care of” Rush Limbaugh in Hawaii. I found it offensive and troubling, as we don’t kill off political opponents. By retweeting it, I wanted to draw attention to the death wishes that were being levied against a private citizen who had chest pains and was admitted to the ER. My subsequent tweets also discussed that point.
As someone who graduated from Johnson High School on the East Side of Saint Paul, played on an all black basketball team, and has coached the summer program there, which happened to also be all black, I find it rather disingenuous to try and label me a racist. Perhaps, you should go ask the team that I helped receive a $2,000 grant for this season if they think I am a racist.
And for the record, the comment is still on my twitter as I didn’t take it off because I didn’t see anything wrong with retweeing it then, and I don’t today. Again, because I retweeted the comment, that does not mean that I CONDONE OR ENDORSE the comment. I simply wanted to expose wishes of death towards someone that I found a bit shocking and quite frankly, I was surprised at them. And for the record, I am not a “birther.”
Sincerely,
David J. Carlson
Apparently David Carlson is too damn dumb to recognize a teabagger in electronic blackface. No doubt his base is composed of equally sharp products of inbreeding.
Wow “rhus” your comment took a lot of thought. Who’s dumb?
I really don’t understand the point of twitter and I especially don’t understand this tweet or your explanation of it, but it does not give me a good impression of you.
If this is the same guy that ran for the legislature from the East Side just last cycle. He distributed a piece of lit in 2008 tapping into white fear by having a picture of a dark hand over the mouth over a white woman clearly intending to do harm.
When cornered, I love hearing them squeal about their black friends. So what? He didn’t get to decide who he played with and Johnson did not have an all black team when he was there- even if it was just him which it wasn’t.
I’m shocked at the boldness of some republicans in exposing their racism, I’m not surprised anymore. Not at all.
The lit piece was not a black person’s hand. It is a white guys hand. But more so, for you to assume that Dave has no black friends you truly look like a moron. I am black and I have have been friends with Dave for years and he does not have a racist bone in his body, who knows maybe I am just one of those self-hating blacks. Again, this post is typical, ignorant, quick to pull the race card, liberal feces.
Well, it clearly wasn’t an “all black” basketball team, since you played on it. I guess it’s irrelevant in any case, in that your would-be constituents elected not to nominate you this past weekend.
Just because one brings attention to an issue DOES NOT MEAN THEY ENDORSE OR CONDONE the comments made by other people. I am someone who tries to bring people together, and hopefully by exposing certain issues and bringing them to the light, we can move forward as Americans. I will continue to work towards better relations amongst all people, just as I have my entire life.
Perhaps that is difficult for some to imagine, but when you’re in the Marines and you’re fighting for your life, one doesn’t care the color of the skin of your brother next to you, but rather the content of their character. I learned that from a very young age from my mother, as well as growing up in a diverse inner-city environment on the East Side of Saint Paul and attending Saint Paul Public Schools my entire life.
David J. Carlson
Words of a dissembling douche. Thanks for clearing things up, you lying schmuck.
“lojasmo” have some respect. It’s easy saying something like that when you aren’t talking face-to-face. Your basic coward is somebody that harasses somebody with an anonymous post.
I doubt the sincerity and veracity of your claim, sir.
Is that better, Mr. Gerrard? I hope your delicate sensibilities have now been soothed to the point that you can make your way to the bidet to cleanse your nether regions of sand.
For the record, I am not afraid to call a douchebag a douchebag in real life, nor am I afraid to call a liar a liar.
Some people believe that convictions are worth defending.
I don’t know David Carlson very well, but I really object to this and find it crossing the line of civility, lojasmo. Maybe David is a racist: I don’t know, but I’m not comfortable with the level of certainty on the part of my fellow posters that he is.
Let me put it bluntly: I’d prefer to leave this kind of nastiness and rancor to the other side- it’s not like there’s some sort of shortage that we have to make up for.
Fascinating!
GOP Senate candidate calls President Obama “Nigga” and then uses the excuse of I can’t be racist, because “I have black friends.”
Are you serious? David Carlson is a racist???? Now that is a comical notion. I have known David for many years now. This man is one of my greatest friends and I am darker than Obama. But beyond the fact that Dave already mentioned about being from the East side. How about the fact that Dave had lawn signs in people’s yards who were black and during his parade on White Bear Ave in 2008 there were all kinds of races coming up to Dave that knew him. On further point, take a look at the guys status that was re-tweeted. The dude is black and is not calling Obama a nigger in the derogatory sense but a nigga in the endearing sense. Don’t tell me you think that saying nigga is racist if used in the right context. If so, you need to turn on BET or grab the latest Lil Wayne, Ludacris, T.I., 50 Cent, etc… CD. Just look at lilduval’s twitter, he is black. You libtards are morons who grasp at things that don’t even exist.
Well, then it’s okay because you say so, and claim to be black. Thanks for clearing that up. Oh, and I don’t give a fuck about Lil Wayne, Ludakris, half-buck, or any of those crude entertainment figures. Not a fuck. I would hope, though, that if they run for office, they wouldn’t be stupid enough to call the POTUS “nigga”…not even in the “endearing” sense…moron.
Once again “lojasmo” comes through with an intelligent post. What a classy person “lojasmo” is. You are giving the DFL a bad rep.
The use of racially derogatory terms as “endearments” by popular rap artists does not make it acceptable for a white man to use racial epithets against a sitting president.
To imply that Barack Obama would injure or otherwise harm slovenly fat-ass Rush Limbaugh, is not only laughable, bur frankly offensive in itself.
For a white man to call our president “nigga” is offensive, despite the opinion of “darkness”
For Mr. Carlson to re-tweet this without comment is to condone the tweet. Any mid-intelligence high school graduate with a twitter account knows this. If Mr. Carlson is so ignorant of social media, he should hang it the fuck up, and stop tweeting.
Mr. Gerrard: It will be a cold day in hell before I would accept, much less be offered a position as spokesperson for the DFL Kindly go about your business, sir.
(anybody offended by the language in this post can bugger off*)

i would like to know where you were when bill clinton said obama would have been a few years ago. or where you were when rahm called people effing “retards” or where you were when reid said Obama was electable because he was ‘light-skinned’ and had ‘no Negro dialect, or where you were when byrd was elected, the only national official with a history in the clan, or where you were for jesse jacksons anti semitic remarks.
there are many other Dems in the list. but, same as in the case of trent lott, when a republican makes a clearly ambiguous statement you jump to the race card. a black calling another black “nigga” is quite common. this clearly was not his own tweet, but a retweet of a black calling obama black.
pretty convenient how republicans are the racist but every time you guys play this card, its ambiguous statements.
next your going to tell me lincoln was not a conservative, and you might even try to prove it by misquoting the cooper union address, the oft misquoted “what is conservatism” phrase in which he explicitly identifies himself as a conservative and republican.
hes guilty of racism cause he didnt follow tweet protocol. i love how convenient the racist label is for you.
Oh, so Dave Carlson was calling President Obama a “nigga” in the “endearing sense”?
It’s precious. And the new slew of posters are similarly “endearing”
Governor Pawlenty hosts fundraiser for GOP Senate candidate who called President Obama a “nigga.”
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/polinaut/archive/2010/01/pawlentys_fundr.shtml
But it’s OK because he was calling President Obama a “nigga” in the “endearing sense”?
Steve,
Re-tweeting what someone else wrote in not endorsing the statement. David is not the one who used the word n…. Get your facts strait and to say that the Governor endorsed someone who said this is clearly completely off base and untrue!
Joe, you dimwit: It is indeed endorsing, unless the tweet is countered.
Example
@John Boehner: President Obama said our ideas are better
Retweet
via @John Boehner: President Obama said our ideas are better
indicates agreement, while:
via@John Boehner: President Obama said our ideas are better. No, congressman, you just think that because you were asleep.
Expresses an alternate, or contrary opinion.
@joegerrard: You are a moron. Please stop embarrassing yourself.
strait=narrow body of water separating two bodies of land.
straight=in order.
Maybe we should talk about his Democrat opponent Jim Carlson. The guy who politicized the 35W bridge collapse….
But the praise for the new bridge was often overshadowed by the politics surrounding the old bridge’s collapse. Sen. Jim Carlson, DFL-Eagan, said he could only imagine the pressure being exerted so that “a couple of buses of Republicans” could triumphantly drive across a new bridge during the Republican National Convention in early September.
That was clearly said in the “endearing” sense.
followed immediately by “… and [us, the Dems] would do it too if our convention was here”. But I guess finishing sentences in print doesn’t make for good headlines and fake controversy…
Dear Darkness, since Carlson is white, it’s not an all black basketball team if he played for the same team. Just apologize Dave.
via@steveS. Just apologize Dave.
He re-tweeted somebody else’s tweet to prove a point. Yeah, it was a bad idea…but let it go.
Usually, when you try to prove a point, you state the point. When you are in agreement, you simply re-post or re-tweet. He just re-tweeted which indicates support.
The guy has extremely bad judgment on race issues and what’s acceptable. Public office is not the place for him.
I’m more concerned that this is type of person who earned the right to be honored as a Marine. WTF?
Part of the art of professional political mudslinging is being able to take one person’s words and put them into someone else’s mouth. Nowhere else is this done better than on the blogs. This story is nothing but an attempt to smear Carlson, and a stretch at that. I only wonder which lifeless agenda driving zombie(s) it was that spent all morning looking for someone’s day to ruin. Seems like that’s how machine driven e-politics works now a days.
If I remember right, Carlson ran for state rep for the east side of saint paul in 2008, against Rep. Sheldon Johnson. I live in Dayton’s Bluff on the east side, and I remember getting his campaign literature in the mail. His campaign literature was essentially meant to put fear of “darker-skinned” people into the minds of voters, with a prominent picture of an obvious white woman with a fearful look as the hand of a person of dark skin covered her mouth. This was an awful message to send, especially in a diverse neighborhood like Dayton’s Bluff. Whether he means to be “racist” or not, this shows that this is not just a “gaffe.” Carlson has terrible judgment and needs to be kept far, far away from the levers of power.
via@daytonsbluffer:His campaign literature was essentially meant to put fear of “darker-skinned” people into the minds of voters, with a prominent picture of an obvious white woman with a fearful look
I am not shocked. <-seewhatididthere?
I saw that piece also. A clear fear mongering piece aimed to scare people.
David J. Carlson: Do you stand by that piece of attack lit or do you apologize and repudiate it?
@atilla: I saw that piece also. A clear fear mongering piece aimed to scare people.David J. Carlson: Do you stand by that piece of attack lit or do you apologize and repudiate it?
(parenthetical aside, I left it unaltered, because I am ECHOING the sentiment…Are you guys catching on yet?)
It’s public record that David has a problem with alcohol. If you search Minnesota public records his criminal history includes three alcohol related convictions. Were all human and make mistakes but to me this is a problem that shows a pattern.
Thanks to Publius, the lit piece is still here:http://mnpublius.com/2008/11/the-horror-of-gop-campaign-tactics/
After a wonderfully dismal campaign that played to white fear of minorities and manipulating that lit piece to ‘darken’ it up, that wonderful East Side where Carlson is from and ran in 2008, stood with him at 28%.
Brodkorb loved his piece so much and wrote so much about that Carlson thought he’d have a better chance as his neighbor out in Eagan.
http://mnpublius.com/2008/11/the-horror-of-gop-campaign-tactics/
Headline:
MNPublis publish racial slur about President Obama.
I have a screenshot to prove it.
I have no real dog in this fight but David J. Carlson sure comes off as an asshat douche. If you put something in the public discussion, whether it originates with you or not, it is “yours.”
So amuseinc and MNPublis are both now racist since they publish the message and comment on it.
Keep trying Sam.
MN Publius didn’t just re-print the lit piece, like Carlson re-tweeted the racial slur. If you follow the link I provided, they had a copy of it THEN wrote at length the problem with the piece and why its unacceptable. Unlike Carlson who just copied a tweet and added nothing to it. You know, like MDE does with Republican press releases.
You’re not smart enough for this conversation, and certainly not clever enough to provide an ‘ah-ha’ gotcha moment.
Crickets Chirping
Mr. David J. Carlson, I assume by your lack of comment you stand by your racist fear-mongering lit piece.
He may have done himself some good by not commenting and letting this die. It’s sure to come up in October, more later. Looking over my comment on the piece when it was released, I thought I’d repost- because I stand behind it:

Ummm, Sheldon still won with 71%. The truth came out that Carlson was a deadbeat father and without a job. That was the last thing Eastsiders needed representing them.
I wish I could say I’m surprised the GOP pukes stole an image, enhanced it to fit their agenda and then thought it was great. That womans face was lightened and the man’s hand was darkened. It was aimed to tap into the worse inside people. In a district where you need significant brown and black votes, he picked the wrong tactic. Now he has to get a job and start paying for those kids. Loser
DJZ, you sound like an upset groupie-you sure spend a lot of time on this senate candidate… The hand in the lit piece is clearly white. What are you looking at? Do you just smile alone in your mommy’s basement writing blatantly false blog entries? These are the tweets that are still on Carlson’s page, which this blog also hasn’t apparently corrected from their description, because I was able to copy them:

“@BarackObama hey my nigga i heard u in hawaii i got a situation i need u 2 take care of over by the hospital. DM me asap”
RT from @lilduval 12:29 AM
“u mean to tell me there aint nobody brave enough in hawaii hospital to put a pillow over rush limbaugh head? wat is this world cumin 2?”
What a great job of spinning here Zach Stephenson; Carlson sure seems like a flaming racist. The lit piece is top notch; I sure wouldn’t vote for this creep Sheldon Johnson. A pedophile loving, Ramsey County Probation’s Officer, and State House member, voting to let perverts move into our communities, out voted 131-3, and you stick up for him? Your parents upstairs would be so proud of you defending sexual predators, but hell, most of you are probably about to get caught on “To Catch a Predator” anyways.
Attacking a young father who seems very involved and fond of his children is pretty grimey. If the guy has been ordered to pay child support and is not, as you say, then why don’t you link the documents so every one can see them-if not, then give it a rest and find something productive and important to do in this world, maybe like this Carlson guy you’re bashing. I wonder how many of you have served your country…

Libel much? Let’s see, you misrepresented the bill, vote and the Representative.
Since that wasn’t the vote, the conclusion drawn by you and the mail piece was a lie.

Yep. You’re right, nothing racist at all in those statements. Its perfectly fine for Carlson to retweet these to show agreement.
Attacking a young father who seems very involved and fond of his children is pretty grimey. Attacking a douche-bag who pays nothing to his ex-wives or kids is fair game. Does it really mattered if he is ordered to pay or not? Are your responsibilities lessened because a court has not made a decision? I do important work, and do it quite well. I don’t have the time to run for office or the ability to live on the 40 grand a year it pays- and neither does Carlson.
I wonder how many of you have served your country…
Quite a few of us have worn the uniform for our country. However, we are also being responsible to our children and not just around running for office. Carlson is serving a political party. His website and Facebook page says a lot. He’s a Fox News, Sarah Palin, Tea Party Republican not interested in solutions only sustaining the anger and confusion.
