Last week, we reported that David Carlson, a candidate for the State Senate in Eagan, had retweeted a tweet containing a racial slur directed at President Obama. It turns out that just two weeks later Governor Tim Pawlenty hosted a fundraiser for Carlson. According to Carlson’s website, Pawlenty appeared at a $100/person event for Carlson on January 11. I wonder what Tim Pawlenty thinks of David Carlson’s twitter habits?

Just practice for Timmy when he has to pander for the Southern vote.
Just smile and ignore all of the offensive things said and done.
This is example #140 of why the Democrats are going to get their asses totally kicked in November.
In Virginia you tried telling voters the Republican candidate was a sexist…you lost.
In New Jersey you’d tried telling voters the Republican candidate was fat..you lost.
In Mass. you tried telling voters that the Republican candidate wanted to deny treatment to rape victims….you lost.
Now you try telling people that retweeting makes someone a racist. And you will lose again.
CHANGE IS ON THE WAY!!
In Virginia you tried telling voters the Republican candidate was a sexist…you lost.

In Mass. you tried telling voters that the Republican candidate wanted to deny treatment to rape victims….you lost.
He was a sexist.
He is very fat.
I don’t remember that from Massachusetts, I do remember that from the Governor of Alaska and we won.
Now you try telling people that retweeting makes someone a racist. And you will lose again.
No. Retweeting without specifying you believe different means support. We’re saying that this doucher has a record of trying to tap into that racist element, that exist in the Republican party, for political gain. You guys have been doing it since Nixon’s Southern Strategy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy
Loose again? Republican math is funny? You can’t get something for nothing. If you think you’re going to get control by doing nothing and saying no, well, OK.
This is local and Carlson will not make it into the legislature. He’s a carpetbagger looking for an opportunity. A guy who has been dependent and benefited from government his whole life, now asking to be a decision maker in the government so that he can chastise others who may rely on the government.
I am sure that Democrat candidates for the state house agree with you. Keep calling Republicans racist. I’m sure that will play well in Little Falls, North Branch, Rosemount, and Eagan.
Pawlenty probably giggled when he read Carlson’s retweet.
David Carlsons ticket mate for the house is Doug Wardlow. Carlson and Wardlow are both cut from the same cloth, radical conservative teabagger types, both with a long history of blogs and tweets on the net. Curious that Pawlenty fundraised for Carlson but not for Wardlow who wants Pawlentys old seat.
Emmer skipping MPR debate today. Unusual.
This whole deal is way off base. If you are going to judge Carlson’s Tweets, judge them all. It seems to me the whole point of his Tweets was to show how distasteful it was for a rapper to call on Obama to kill Limbaugh.
Here are BOTH Tweets. I think this puts the discussion in a new context and shows exactly how off base this whole discussion really is.
RT from @lilduval 12:35 AM
“@BarackObama hey my nigga i heard u in hawaii i got a situation i need u 2 take care of over by the hospital. DM me asap”
RT from @lilduval 12:29 AM
“u mean to tell me there aint nobody brave enough in hawaii hospital to put a pillow over rush limbaugh head? wat is this world cumin 2?”
So…in order to beleive Carlson takes this Retweet to heart, you’d also have to believe that he wants Limbaugh dead. Seems to me the people attacking Carlson want this argument both ways. How can Carlson be a crazy right-winger (where Limbaugh makes his living) and want Limbaugh dead????
Honestly, I don’t think he takes it to heart or even believes it.
What I do believe is that that “humorous” portrayal of some black person using street language to both describe the President and infer murdering a real racist (Limbaugh)is something that Carlson finds advantageous. By laughing at that and retweet for all of his followers to see, it gives them something to laugh at together.
Building support off of racial tension (the lit piece in which the hand of the man was darkened from the original movie poster is was taken from) or, racist jokes that demean other groups and ignorant and derogatory, is just as disgusting as the person who sent the tweet. It also shows poor judgment and trashy taste on behalf of Mr Carlson.
His refusal to even acknowledge this was a bad decision and in poor taste says even more. However, this is the party in the last ten years that have sent members to the legislature that had previously been convicted of being a tax cheat, racist, sex offender and child abuse. Carlson is just next head scratcher in a long line. (Just ask and I will name names to those offenses). Just wait until his ex-wives speak out.
The candidate is a moron, and a republican. There is no shortage of cognitive dissonance among this subset. XD
I think this entire storyline is a little silly.
Politics itself tends to be somewhat silly, doncha think?
Take a 24-hour news cycle, add the substitution of “gotcha!” for discussion of real issues, and this is what we get.
If I linked to an NWA video, would it make me a racist?
It would not “make you” a racist. nobody’s claiming the re-tweet “made” the candidate a racist. The candidate is obviously a moron, though, who is naive to social media, and probably shouldn’t be using it unless he wises the fuck up.
Democrats are fuck ups. They try to raise taxes in a recession and do thinks like take away the tax break for organ donation.
“ups” is not a word, nor is thinks, in this context. Could you please provide a link to the bill that proposes to eliminate the tax break for organ donation?
http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/bs/84/hf0020.html
Then where is the story? I think folks on the left have to be careful about being too offended on other people’s behalf, especially folks they obviously know so little about. In the end it just makes you look stupid and nannyish to the people you think your sticking up for.
Depends on how you use it. If you use it cause like to listen to that garbage, no.
If you use it as an example or portrayal of how black people talk or act, then yes.
If you post it and say this is destructive to blacks internally and externally- then no. You’ll probably get some kind of an award if you provide research.
Don’t disparage NWA. The band was revolutionary in rap music, and contains a powerhouse of talent. Not my cup of tea, but certainly valid from an artistic standpoint.
I couldn’t disagree with you more DJZ. NWA was not garbage.
Question 2: Was George H.W. Bush racist for calling out Ice T for his song Cop Killer?
This seems to be leading to the tired old “you can’t say anything negative about African Americans or the liberals will call you a racist” canard. Just to save some time: no, it isn’t racist. African-Americans, like people of any race can do bad things. It is not racist to call them out for that. What is racist is trafficking in stereotypes (watermelon food staps, “bone in the nose”), throwing around epithets, brandishing symbols of racism or racial oppression, and continually harping on a person’s race when it has no bearing on anything (and yes, I include things like “I forgot he was black for an hour”).
No, I am not saying that you have ever in your life done any of these things. I am not saying you are racist, and I believe that you are not, since I have seen nothing to the contrary. So enough of this silly little game. Move on to something interesting.
As a kid I liked NWA, as an adult that has seen a lot, and in retrospect, I think it did damage.
George Bush and Ice-T jumped on the bandwagon. Bush wanting to be the cultural warrior that Jerry Falwell insisted on and appeal to soccer moms like Tipper Gore was doing. Ice-T made a crappy song that trying to capitalize off of the shock and awe brought on to us from NWA and gangsta rap. It was like who could go the farthest and get the biggest parental advisory sticker on their album/tape/CD.
Randy you are so right on this.
Lloyd and lojasmo, remember this next time you step to me:
The boyz in the hood are always hard
You come talkin’ that trash we’ll pull your card
Knowin’ nothin’ in life but to be legit’
Don’t quote me boy, cuz i ain’t said sh@!…
- I know, its not NWA but Eazy E.
I believe his full name was Eazy Mother F***ing E.
No, actually Randy it’s a stupid post on a stupid topic. It’s no more racist for this guy to “retweet” some “racial slur” than it is to create a headline “Candidate Retweets Racial Slur” and then link to the racial slur he “retweeted”. It’s beneath this site and nearly everyone who frequents it to trade in this race baiting bullshit and you know it. Obviously whoever is selling this story can’t win on the issues so this is what they’re going with. Sad.
Lojasmo - HF2323 last session. http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/votes/votes.asp?ls_year=86&session_number=0&year=2009&id=1709
Don’t worry you’ll be hearing lots of radio ads and seeing lots of postcards about this…..
Just one more reason why DFL house members are in serious trouble this session.
Change is on the way…change you can believe in!
This story is boring. I’d rather bash Pawlenty for his idiotic views on dealing with federal budget deficit, as shared in Politico today.
where “….he rants about the deficit without proposing any spending cuts and insisting on still more tax cuts.
Like all Republicans these days, Pawlenty wants to have it every possible way: complain about the deficit while ignoring everything his party did to create it (Medicare Part D, two unfunded wars, TARP, earmarks galore, tax cuts up the wazoo, irresponsible regulatory and monetary policies that created the recession that created the deficit, etc.), illogically insisting that tax cuts are a necessary part of deficit reduction, and never proposing any specific spending cuts”
Check out the link for more specifics on the studipidity of his “proposal.” Re #6, I feel we in MN know the perpetual state of emergency created by Pawlenty budget gimmicks all too well.
http://capitalgainsandgames.com/blog/bruce-bartlett/1462/tim-pawlenty-not-ready-prime-time
C’mon south metro dem, you know he suggested a lot of spending cuts using unallotment and may have stepped over the limited control he had over spending. I agree he could have been more forceful in his insistance on budget cuts but in the end those cuts were still up to the legislature.
Can you deny that?
Lojasmo - no comment on the Democrats plan to repeal the tax break for organ donation? Your Democrat pals didn’t tell you about that?
Message from David(don’t laugh as you read this but, he has found Jesus and is a different man):
Setting the Record Straight
I would like to take this opportunity to respond to some personal attacks levied against me and my family during the past few days. In the Marines, they tell us to work hard and play hard. I probably have been guilty of both.
While in my first couple years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, I was given one underage consumption ticket in 2002. In 2003, I had three beers in my laundry basket, and was given an underage possession of alcohol ticket while living on campus. In 2006, I was pulled over for speeding, and subsequently blew a .08, just above the legal limit; I later pled guilty to careless driving.
We are who we are today because of our past experiences in life, and I am no different. Luckily for me, the role of Jesus Christ has been taken by a far greater man than I, who died to forgive my sins. While there are no excuses for ones youthful indiscretions, I would hope people look at the good things I’ve accomplished in my life, that hopefully outweigh any of my faults as a human being.
I voluntarily left college in 2003 to join the Marine Corps infantry, and would go on to serve three combat tours in Iraq for my country as a machine gunner.
I was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, displaying three consecutive years of “honorable and faithful service”. Such service implies that a standard enlistment was completed without any non-judicial punishment, disciplinary infractions, or court martial offenses. After four years, I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps.
Finally, the attacks against my family are of the utmost lowest contempt, and I would like to address those now. I have always supported my children financially, and more importantly, I have been an active Dad to my daughters from day one, and that will continue until the day I die.
While no one enjoys being attacked in the shadows of the internet, my resolve is renewed– my commitment to serving the people of my district and my state, has never been stronger.
The politics of personal destruction and endless bickering is exactly what the people of Minnesota are sick and tired of seeing. Nobody is perfect, and I surely have never claimed to be. As the Bible teaches us, “Let he who hath no sin, cast the first stone.”
Sincerely,
David J. Carlson
How about just admitting to making mistakes. Why bring Jesus in this? He didn’t make him do anything AND, we find out that ol’ DJC doesn’t even attend church, which I thought was mandatory for the Republican grassroots.
DJZ,
Did a little searching on this blog after watching a commercial I was sent about this Carlson guy. It seems you’re really only active on articles dealing with this particular candidate. You sure speak a lot about his ex, are you his ex? For the amount of time and effort you put into personally attacking someone that you clearly know personally, Mr. Carlson should seek some kind of financial compensation from you; perhaps then he can give some money to support his kids (By the way, for someone who doesn’t support his kids, he sure seems to have them a lot from all the pictures you can view on facebook publicly; pictures from every phase of his daughters lives?)
Perhaps you’re not an ex, but a jealous male or relative. There’s something going on and it smells like shit — and it’s you. Reading your shit talking this early in the morning made me want to throw up. You’re the kind guy that got his ass kicked growing up it sounds like. You sit and run your mouth but I doubt if you saw Mr. Carlson you would do anything but smile and tuck your tail between your legs. The guy looks like he’s been on the front lines of the war — you seem to be on the front line of the blogosphere.
What a douche. Get a life or a job. Wait, you say you do an important job but surely have plenty of time at your cubicle to do some blogging. If your life didn’t suck enough…LOSER.
