DantheMan, the trick is that with universal health care we spend less. All those other industrialized nations with universal health care (whose plans the Republicans and a lot of Democrats won’t consider) spend LESS on health care than we do. The people in those countries actually keep more of their own money. They pay more to the government, but pay much less (or nothing at all) to health insurers.

It doesn’t cost a trillion dollars to implement. That is where you miss the point. It shifts a trillion dollars that we are spending in various ways from one place to another.

This bill essentially combines 10% of the both private and public expenditures currently made in Health Care and uses it to leverage a modest 7% reduction of that pool.

Say what? I don’t know anyone saying that. I know alot of people saying this is a bad fix.

So what’s my problem?

Obama: “We will soon spend 17% of our GDP on healthcare. That is unacceptable and I need to do something about it.”

Me: “I agree 17% is not sustainble. What do you propose?”

Obama: “Spend another trillion”

Me: “But wasn’t the original problem that we spend too much”

Obama: “Once I pass this bill you’ll forget about all the numbers”

If this is such a natural cost-saver, then why does it cost a trillion dollars to implement? Your pool enlargement / elasticity point is factored in to the CBO analysis, and there is still a hefty price tag.

To fix the problem AND keep most of it in the private profit sector, you expand the pool of customers by at least 30 million. That spreads the cost out for service by quite a bit. It lessens the very expensive choice of emergency rooms as primary care units, and it removes the biggest and fastest rising costs on small businesses- which employ most people.

So what’s your problem?

Enlarging the pool of insured brings down costs. It’s plainly evident. Look at any society with universal health care.
