Republican gains won’t last
Yesterday, I said that if there is a Republican “wave” this year, it will not be a vote for the Republicans, it will be a vote against the Democrats. I also said that the same applied to the Democrats’ wins in 2006 and 2008.
According to a new Gallup poll, though, that’s even more the case this year than it was in 2006. In 2006, 38 percent of those voting for Democrats cast that vote as a vote against the Republicans. Today, 44 percent of those voting for Republicans say they’re voting against the Democrats.
What does that mean for the Republican party? I think it means it’s a mistake that they’re moving so far to the right. They shouldn’t confuse their potential electoral success with actual voter approval of their policies. By moving so far to the right when voters don’t really support them, they’re setting themselves up for a world of hurt in the next election.
