Mortgaging our future

On the MNGOP’s horribly irresponsible tobacco bonds, a reader writes:

They are quite literally mortgaging our state’s future.

On a $250,000 mortgage, a homeowner will generally pay about $200,000 in interest over the course of a 30-year loan, which is comparable to the amount of interest the state will pay on these bonds.

Usually, when we say the GOP is mortgaging our future, it’s hyperbole. In this case, it’s quite accurate.
