Yet another flavor of the month

Wow. I misunderestimated how much Republican voters hate their presidential candidates. I thought it was a pretty safe bet when I wrote, with less than a month before the caucuses, that Gingrich would be the final anti-Romney candidate because “there’s likely no time left for a different flavor of the month before the Iowa caucuses.”

As it turns out, there was plenty of time. With Ron Paul and Rick Santorum now putting up good numbers, every Republican has now had their chance to be flavor of the month, with the exception of a few also-rans like Jon Huntsman and Gary Johnson.

Over the past year, Republicans desperate for a candidate who can take on Romney have left the race in an incredible state of flux. The irony, though, is that the fervor of the anti-Romney crowd could actually lead to an easy Romney win.

There have been so many anti-Romney flavors of the month that the anti-Romney vote is going to be heavily diluted. Even though each has seen their support plummet from the brief peaks, they have all retained some support. Even if Rick Santorum can continue gaining momentum and become the final anti-Romeny, the past flavors of the month will take around 30 percentage points from him. And that will be plenty to land Romney in 1st or 2nd place.

It’s really a thing of beauty. The Republicans’ incessant efforts to beat back Romney are going to result in his coronation instead.
