Mike Parry doesn’t know what the MN Constitution says

Eric Pusey at MN Progressive Project has a great catch: Mike Parry (yes, that Mike Parry) is clearly misinformed about our state Constitution. Either that, or he just ignores the parts he doesn’t like.

Parry doesn’t think the Minnesota Constitution requires us to spend any money on transit. He says he has “issues” over whether the constitution dictates that any money must be spent on transit.

That makes me wonder if Parry has read our Constitution. Let’s take a look at what the Constitution says, as duly amended by Minnesota voters in the 2006 election:

Sec. 13. Motor vehicle sales tax allocation. The revenue apportioned in section 12 must be allocated for the following transportation purposes: not more than 60 percent must be deposited in the highway user tax distribution fund, and not less than 40 percent must be deposited in a fund dedicated solely to public transit assistance as defined by law. [Adopted, November 7, 2006]

Now, Parry may disagree with the citizens of Minnesota. He may not approve of their decision. But there it is, in black and white, in the Constitution. Parry must respect the people’s decision as it is enshrined in our Constitution.
