Republican leaders are happy to help local units of government — at least when they’re in their own districts. Spot at The Cucking Stool notes that Amy Kock and Mary Kiffmeyer, who represent the Elk River school district, have introduced bills to send extra money to the district.
Normally, Republicans just complain that if local units of government are having budget problems, it’s their own damn fault. If the legislature cuts local government aid, for example, Republicans claim that shouldn’t cause property taxes to rise — it’s the local governments’ responsibility to make tough decisions.
Apparently for their own home districts, though, that doesn’t apply. Their own districts need to be rescued because they have a lot of debt and don’t want to raise property taxes. That makes it totally fine.
To be clear, I don’t have a problem with Elk River getting this extra money. But Koch and Kiffmeyer are being hypocritical in claiming that local governments don’t need state money — except for their own.
