Enough rope to hang themselves
Last week, the MNGOP proposed three constitutional amendments in a single week. It’s a pretty good bet that at some point before the end of the biennium in 2012, they’ll have proposed a few more. I wonder how many amendments they’ll ultimately put on the ballot.
The Republicans’ overreach is a big mistake. Voters aren’t going to tolerate having the entire MNGOP platform put before them in the form of constitutional amendments. The sheer number of amendments they’re putting on the ballot is going to hurt the chances of each individual measure.
“But Jeff,” some people have said, “what’s so horrible about asking Minnesotans to vote on these issues?” Well, we’re not just asking them to vote on the issues — we’re asking them to amend our constitution. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think we should write every tenet in the MNGOP platform into our constitution.
I suspect most Minnesotans agree with me. That’s why the more amendments the MNGOP puts on the ballot in 2012, the fewer Minnesotans will vote for each one. That’s why Mark Dayton and the DFL shouldn’t do anything to try to discourage the MNGOP power grab. They should give the Republicans enough rope to hang themselves.
