Honestly, the bigger news in this article for me was the announcement that John Wade, President of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, will not run. I have heard multiple Republicans mention Wade as a strong candidate and his decision to pass seems to be a minor victory for Walz.
Meanwhile, Dick Day (as usual) had the most interesting quote in the article:
A 16-year state senator who held the post of GOP House Minority Leader for nearly a decade, Day touted himself as among the most conservative members at the Legislature.
“There’s never been a waver on any type of gay marriage, abortion, prayer in schools. You name it. I’ve either led the charge or I voted that way, so I think you’ll find that I have very strong conservative credentials,” Day said.
This indicates that the Republican primary is going to evolve into a race to the right (not terribly surprising), a battle that does nothing but help Walz.
Also, here’s hoping that Day is the eventual Republican nominee. He embodies the liabilities of candidates like Al Franken and Jesse Ventura (loose cannon who says things that make some voters cringe), but with none of the positives a Franken or a Ventura bring to the table. Franken’s value is that he’s not a typical pol. Day has been in the State Senate for 16 years, that’s getting to be a little Roger Moeish.
By the way, who the hell does Day think he is kidding with this line:
“I plan on winning back the First District for Republicans,” Day said in a speech before about 70 county Republicans that stressed his conservative credentials and his record of winning elections.
His “record of winning elections”? He was the MINORITY Leader for a decade! That means he COULDN’T win elections. Hell, he couldn’t put together a majority in 2002, when the House GOP won 80+ seats.
Let’s hope Day wins back the First District the same way he won back the State Senate.
