Ohio Senate Candidate Channels Wellstone

Tyrone Yates is a State Representative from Ohio who just announced he’s running for the United States Senate in 2010. Faced with long odds and formidable opposition (the state’s Lt. Governor and Secretary of State have both already announced candidacies), Yates has decided to emulate Minnesota’s own Paul Wellstone:

Yates, who set up the committee on Wednesday, Feb. 25, said he wants to model his campaign after the successful effort that vaulted the late Paul Wellstone of Minnesota into the U.S. Senate.

Yates, 55, said he’d like to find an “old school bus that we can green up, weld a platform on the back, stick an American flag on it, put ‘Yates for the Senate’ on the side and ride across Ohio.”

Its too soon to say if Yates’ similarities to Wellstone extend beyond their shared affinity for green buses, but certainly something to keep an eye on.

Classy: Franken Remembers Wellstone

I just went over to Al Franken’s website to collect some information for our forthcoming election site (get excited!) and was greated by a picture of Paul and Shiela Wellstone along with a link to “read a message from Al.”  First of all, I think it’s legitmately touching for the campaign to devote their entire frontpage to Wellstone, especially knowing how much Al believed in Paul.  Most politicians might have attempted to use this sad anniversary to subtly link themselves to a popular figure, but Al’s message really meant a lot to me.  So, I thought I’d share

Dear Friends,

Today marks six years since the plane crash that took the lives of Paul and Sheila Wellstone, their daughter Marcia Wellstone Markuson, Tom Lapic, Mary McEvoy, Will McLaughlin, and pilots Richard Conry and Michael Guess.

Six years, and we miss our friends more than ever. But just as we still feel the sting of their loss, we are still inspired by their passion, their courage, and their vision for what this country can be, expressed so simply and eloquently by Paul when he said, “We all do better when we all do better.”

Just about every Minnesotan who had the privilege to meet Paul and Sheila has a story about them. The one I’m remembering today happened the last time I saw Paul.

It was just a few weeks before he passed away. At the time, my mom was in a nursing home in Minneapolis. And when I saw Paul at an event I was doing for him, he was locked in a fierce and close campaign, but the first thing he said to me was, “How’s your mom?”

I said, “She’s not so good. Yesterday, I went to visit and I couldn’t even have a conversation with her.”

He nodded, put his hand on my shoulder, and said, “You know, touch means so much.”

The next day, I went back to the nursing home. My mom still wasn’t doing well. But I took her out into the garden and just sat with my arm around her for a while. And I don’t know if it meant anything to her – but it meant the world to me.

That was Paul. He used to say that politics wasn’t about winning or losing, it was about the improvement of people’s lives. I know a lot of people – Democrats, Republicans, folks who could care less about politics – who feel the way Franni and I do: our lives were improved immeasurably, simply by knowing Paul and Sheila.

We will continue to miss our friends — but we will also continue to be inspired by their leadership, and we will continue to strive to live up to their courageous example.

Franken Denounces “Disgraceful” Ads in New Spot

A new 60 second spot from the Franken campaign:

MNpublius covered this early last week. The ad is right: Minnesotans deserve better.

The NRSC receives tracker footage in their dump box from Minnesota and turns them into attack ads. It’s a “legal” way for the MN GOP and Coleman campaign to “tell” the NRSC what to make an ad out of without illegally coordinating.

They recently received a bunch of footage of Al Franken laughing. I wonder what the next NRSC attack ad will contain?
